Collections: The Weekend of August 23, 2015: Offertory - $21,686 plus Faith Direct - $12,706

Thank you for your continued support & your kind generosity.

Peace and good! Pope Francis’ (2015) encyclical, Laudato Si [Be praised my Lord: Our Care for our Common Home] challenges each of us with a call to conversion and action in regards of taking on the task of caring for our common home – the world. As our spiritual and moral leader, Pope Francis challenges each of us to fully answer our call to care for our common home and for God’s creation. “Believers themselves must constantly be challenged to live in a way consonant with their faith and not to contradict it by their actions” (para. 200). As we discern our response to Pope Francis’ call, we come to the realization that it is time to act as individuals and communities in caring for our common home. A good starting point for our discernment is prayer and reflection on the following two questions: • How are you individually called to participate in caring for God’s creation?

• What efforts are happening in our local community that individuals, families, and Catholic communities can participate in?

Pope Francis shares that: “Local individuals and groups can make a real difference. They are able to instill a greater sense of responsibility, a strong sense of community, a readiness to protect others, a spirit of creativity and a deep love for the land” (para. 179). He states that “There is a nobility in the duty to care for creation through little daily actions, and it is wonderful how education can bring about real changes in lifestyle.” The Pope offers some practical ways we can change our lifestyle in order to protect God’s creation: • avoiding the use of plastic and paper; • reducing water consumption; • separating refuse; • cooking only what can reasonably be consumed; • showing care for other living beings; • using public transport or car-pooling; • planting trees; • turning off unnecessary lights; and any number of other practices. (para. 211)

“All of these reflect a generous and worthy creativity which brings out the best in human beings. Reusing something instead of immediately discarding it, when done for the right reasons, can be an act of love which expresses our own dignity” (para. 211). Pope Francis’ encyclical, Laudato Si [Be praised my Lord: Our Care for our Common Home] invites us to enter into prayerful and thoughtful reflection on how we can best care for “our common home.”
