THE DUTIES OF CIVIL AUTHORITIES The Church presents her teaching on the duties of persons in authority under the command-

ment to “Honor thy father and thy mother.” The Catechism of the Catholic Church states that “God’s fourth commandment also enjoins us to honor all who for our good have received authority in society from God. It clarifies the duties of those who exercise authority as well as those who benefit from it” (#2234). The Church insists that state authority exists for the sake of the common good. Therefore, those who exercise this authority must do it as an act of service, not for their own selfish interests or the interests of a select few. They must also act in a way that conforms to the natural law and respects the God-given dignity of persons. They must avoid the temptation to use their position for personal gain. Rather, their decisions must respect “a just hierarchy of values” which promote both freedom and responsibility among the people they govern (Catechism, #2236).

A “just hierarchy of values” means that what is most fundamental to human flourishing must be the

first among various options in policy and law. Some things which are fundamental to human flourishing are: the right of an innocent person not to be intentionally killed or physically harmed; the ability to practice one’s faith without government interference, including the teaching of the faith to children and the freedom to share it with others; the freedom of expression and the exercise of personal initiative in work and culture; and the promotion of family and marriage. From the perspective of Catholic morality any official who inten-tionally acts against these interests is guilty of serious sin because it is contrary to natural law. Moreover, the Church calls on governments to have a special concern for the needs of the poor and disadvantaged in their society.

There are limits to the exercise of power by civil authorities. In the Church’s doctrine on social jus-

tice the principle of subsidiarity looms large. This principle protects against the excessive wielding of pow-er by a central authority. People in power are tempted to aggregate power to themselves. According to David Bosnich of the Acton Institute, subsidiarity requires that “nothing should be done by a larger and more complex organization which can be done as well by a smaller and simpler organization. In other words, any activity which can be performed by a more decentralized entity should be. This principle is a bulwark of limited government and personal freedom” (Religion & Liberty, July 20, 2010). A good example of the violation of subsidiarity would be if the federal government took over responsibility for cutting the grass in a borough park.

Subsidiarity excludes the moral acceptance of socialistic or collectivist forms of government like

communism, as explained in the Catechism: “Socialization also presents dangers. Excessive intervention by the state can threaten personal freedom and initiative. The teaching of the Church has elaborated the principle of subsidiarity, according to which ‘a community of a higher order should not interfere in the inter-nal life of a community of a lower order, depriving the latter of its functions, but rather should support it in case of need and help to coordinate its activity with the activities of the rest of society, always with a view to the common good.’ The exercise of authority must be done at the proper level if it is to be legitimate and promote harmony among the people.

Those whom society has entrusted with authority are personally responsible for its use. Issues of

faith and morality cannot be excluded when it comes to making policy and wielding power. It is never mor-ally permissible for a government official to violate fundamental human rights. Their office does not give them cover for immoral acts. For example, a person who is directed to round up and put in prison a ruling party’s opponents is morally culpable if he obeys the directive. No one ever has to do something wrong, for a choice is always involved, and like every other person, civil authorities are required to make choices that are always in accord with what is right and just.

SUNDAY, AUGUST 30, 2020 | 22ND SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME

ENTRANCE ANTIPHON:

Have mercy on me, O Lord, for I cry to you all the day long. O Lord, you are good and forgiving, full of mercy to all who call to you.

FIRST READING JER 20:7-9

You duped me, O LORD, and I let myself be duped; you were too strong for me, and you triumphed. All the day I am an object of laughter; everyone mocks me. Whenever I speak, I must cry out, violence and outrage is my message; the word of the LORD has brought me derision and reproach all the day. I say to myself, I will not mention him, I will speak in his name no more. But then it becomes like fire burning in my heart, imprisoned in my bones; I grow weary holding it in, I cannot endure it.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM: My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord my God.

SECOND READING ROM 12:1-2

I urge you, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God, your spiritual worship. Do not conform yourselves to this age but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and pleasing and perfect.

GOSPEL MT 16:21-27

Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer greatly from the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed and on the third day be raised. Then Peter took Jesus aside and began to rebuke him, “God forbid, Lord! No such thing shall ever happen to you.” He turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are an obstacle to me. You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do." Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. What profit would there be for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? Or what can one give in exchange for his life? For the Son of Man will come with his angels in his Father’s glory, and then he will repay all according to his conduct.”

COMMUNION ANTIPHON:

How great is the goodness, Lord, that you keep for those who fear you.

The Nicene Creed

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the Giver of Life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!

For the 2021 fiscal year our budgeted Offertory income goal is $740,000. This is less than needed to balance the overall parish budget. That deficit will be made up from the Annual Par-ish Appeal. This week more than sev-enty percent of our regular weekly donors contributed.

Parish Appeal Update

The 2020 Parish Appeal is doing well thanks to you. In the first forty-two weeks of the campaign we have com-mitments from two-hundred ninety families for more than $153,388 with $148,538 received. The first $150,000 will go to balance the parish budget; the remainder will go toward the emer-gency fund for unbudgeted, major expenses for the church; e.g., the ulti-mate replacement of the church roof. The 2020 Parish Appeal will conclude on October 31, 2020.

Ways to Donate to Offertory and Parish Appeal

The Finance Council and Father Scott thank you for your generosity to the par-ish. There are multiple ways to donate to the Offertory and Parish Appeal:

Local Action Needed!!

Local action is urgently needed in support of busing for Catholic and Private Schools in the State of Pennsylvania.

A handful of school districts refuse to commit to providing busing services to our students, despite our re-minders that our families pay taxes. Locally, we need your help in reaching out to the school officials in the Avon Grove school district. Our district has not yet committed to busing services. We have provided as much contact information as was readily available. We ask our parishioners to contact school officials to urge them to fulfill their duty to provide student busing for all students. Thank you!!!!

Religious Education

News

The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish is preparing for the celebration of First Holy Communion on Saturday, September 26, 2020 at 10 am.

In a publication, “Body of Christ, Broken for the World”, the USCCB Department of Justice, Peace and Human Development highlights writings about the social nature of the Eucharist by Popes Paul VI, John Paul II, and Benedict XVI. Their words challenge us to encounter Christ in the Eucharist in ways both personal and social.

We experience the Eucharist as a community.

The Eucharist awakens us to our own dignity and to

that of others.

The Eucharist unifies and heals divisions.

The Eucharist sensitizes us to those who suffer.

The Eucharist moves us and inspires us to respond.

Eucharist-inspired love allows us to live out our

Christian vocation.

The Eucharist challenges us to recognize and

confront structures of sin.

The Eucharist prepares us for mission and the

Eucharist propels us forth to transform the world.

Let us keep in our prayers the children of our parish who will soon be receiving Our Lord Jesus in their First Holy Eucharist.

This Fall, the RCIA program will be offered here at Assumption BVM. Deacon Ron Lewis will be conducting the instruction and would love to see a crowd of inquirers. If you know someone who has expressed an

interest in becoming Catholic or someone who was baptized as a child but has not yet celebrated the sacraments of Confirmation and/or Eucharist, have them contact Deacon Ron by phone or e-mail. It is anticipated that the program will begin in late September and, God willing, will culminate on the Easter Vigil next year with the welcoming of several new Catholics to our Parish! Specifics regarding the schedule for instruction will be published soon. So, get the word out! It may result in the greatest journey someone you know will take… the journey to our Catholic Faith in Jesus Christ. Please contact Deacon Ron Lewis at [email protected] or call 302-547-8586.

As things continue to develop with the pandemic and new restrictions are announced, The Archdiocese of Philadelphia has created a new section on the Arise website called Announcements, Updates and Clarifi-cations. In this section, they will post updates in re-sponse to new restrictions or changes as they are announced on the State or Federal level. This will enable you to find clarifications on important ques-tions quickly without having to wait for a webinar for each change.

LIVE STREAM TEAM MEMBERS NEEDED

Help is needed to assist with our newest ministry (Live Stream Team) on Sundays and for other spe-cial Liturgies that take place here at ABVM. Since the Pandemic, many of our parishioners are unable to attend Mass in-person and depend on being able to connect with the rest of our parish family through this medium.

No particular computer skills are needed and all new team members will be trained on how to run the Live Stream. Please contact Michael Xavier Lundy, Director of Liturgy and Music, in the parish office or by email at [email protected] if you have any questions and are interested in becoming a team member.

WATCH MASS ONLINE VIA PARISH WEBSITE

If you are unable to get to Mass, watch live and

recorded Masses using our Parish

Live Stream Link via the Parish Website:

assumptionbvmwestgrove.org.

Mass is live streamed each Sunday at 10 am.

Saint Teresa of Calcutta

Feast Day: September 5

Mother Teresa, who dedicated her life to helping India’s poor, was declared a saint September 4, 2016 in Rome, Italy. Mother Teresa, a Nobel Peace Prize winner, died on September 5, 1997 at the age of 87. Her Missionaries of Charity order has nearly 4,000 nuns and runs approximately 600 orphanages, homeless shelters, clinics and soup kitchens around the world.

Prayer to Saint Teresa of Calcutta

Mother Teresa, you who have seen Christ Himself in the poorest of the

poor, and had compassion on them, please help us. Glance upon us

with your compassionate eyes and see Christ within us.

As you loved and served Jesus through your work upon earth, we

humbly ask that you continue your work in heaven and intercede for us

in our needs. After looking upon (person(s) needing intercession),

please turn your compassionate eyes to Jesus, as your adored Him in

the Holy Eucharist, and present our request (state petition).

While we are not as materially destitute as those you served on earth,

we reach out to you in the poorness of our souls and seek Jesus

through you. Kindly Mother Teresa, help us. Amen.

Secular problems require savvy secular solutions. We are trained to solve problems, be successful and productive, and find our way through all that life presents to us. Corporations value those who can decipher the best avenue to take in order to resolve an issue. How do you train and renew your mind? Facts, figures, scientific tools, analytical processes, best practices, and models of varying kinds are at our disposal. If we don’t know the full and proper course of action, we can easily find it. But there is a knowledge that goes far beyond all these things that makes a direct claim on the essence of our being. It satisfies a deeper thirst and hunger that keeps us restless until it is satisfied. Our minds, hearts, and souls cannot only be nurtured purely by secular and temporal things. We must seek the enlightenment that comes from God. This allows us to see the value of suffering in order to achieve a greater good and the losing of our every self in the service of something greater. Faith only makes sense if it can bring us to this heightened awareness.
