VOL. IV. DECEMBER, 1891. NO. IV.

THE LEGEND OF THE CHRIST CHILD AND SAINT ANTHONY.

Long ago there lived in the city ofl’adua, a happy little child whose namewas Antonio. He loved birds and flowers and all beautiful things, and he wasso gentle to every body and every thing,that the white swans sailing on thewater would follow at his call; therobins and swallows would come fromtheir homes in the trees to eat out ofhis hand, and the lambkins in the meadows would even leave the mother sheepto play with the little Antonio.As he grew Older Antonio became a

very studious boy, and I think hisparents and teachers must have thoughtthat his name was well chosen—forAntonio or Anthony, (as we should say),means “worthy of praise.” The bookthis little scholar loved best of all, wasthe one that tells the story of the dearLord, who made the sun to shine, thebirds to sing, and the trees and plants tO

grow for His children.When Antonio became a man, he went

far from his home to a country wherethe people were rough and fierce, to tryto teach them to be wiser and moregentle in their way of living with eachother.Antonio himself, was so patient in his

teaching, so brave and loving in all his0

work for them, that the people, rude asthey were, would always listen to himgladly, and it was not long before manyof them had learned a great many lessonsof love from him, and they grew wisertoo. When he was tired and sad because of all the cruel things he saw,and the cross words that he heard,Antonio would go alone to the shore ofthe great sea, and there he would talkto the Heavenly Father, and ask him tomake the people better. One story tellsthat the tones of Antonio’s voice wereso sweet and strong that when he prayedby the seaside, the fishes would come incrowds to the shore, just as the birdsused to come to him when he was a littleboy, and then Antonio would talk tothem about the One who made them.One day as he kneeled by his table to

pray, dressed in the coarse gown thathe always wore, a most beautiful pictureseemed to be opened out before him.He seemed to see the Lord Jesus comingto him in the form of a little naked baby.All around the Holy Child, floated andhovered a host of baby Angels ; but theChrist-child walked on the bright cloudsas if he were treading on the earth.Looking up, waiting and hoping,

Antonio stretched out his arms—when,

Beneath the stars, across the snow,like clear bells ringing,

And a voice within cried, ‘ Listen !

Christmas carols even here !

Though thou be dumb, yet o’er theirwork the stars and snows aresinging.

Blind! I live, I love, I reign; and allthe nations through

With the thunder of my judgmentseven now are ringing ;

Do thou fulfill thy work but as yon wildfowl do,

Thou wilt heed no less the wailing, yethear through it angels singing.‘ "

4. Another thought to be impressedis, goodwill towards men, love to all,—a thought to be borne in mind as we makeour gifts. “ \Vhenever auntie looks atthe pretty mat you are making for her,she will think of the love that goes withit." This is a happy thought for Aliceand puts new life in the little fingers.Our feast days will be merrier if we

_ have first spread a feast for those moreneedy ; to remember them with wordsonly, gives no pleasure to us or to them.Talk OVer with the children these threestanzas from Phoebe Cary and assist inputting them into praCtice :

“Children, whose lives are blest with thelove untold,

Whose gifts are greater than your armscan hold,

Think of the child who standsToday with empty hands !

“ Go fill them up, and you will also fillTheir empty hearts, that be so cold and

still,And brighten longing eyesWith grateful, glad surprise.

" May all who have, at this blest seasonseek

/

His precious little ones, the poor andweak ;

In joyful, sweet accord,Thus lending to the Lord.”

5. It is well to invest Christmas andChrist‘s birth with all the beauty andbrightness, and glory of picture, song andpoem. For the children, at least, makethese joyful seasons. Blessed are you, 0Mother! if your Child's religion be oneof joy and gladness ; there will be morelikelihood when sorrow comes that hisreligion will still be one of gratefulnessand trust. Some of the German legendsof the Christ Child are very beautiful,such as “The Little Stranger” whichtells of the Stranger Child cared for by twopeasant children.‘ “Good King \Venceslas” which is sung to a quaint oldEnglish melody is always liked by thelittle ones, and most children know“ ’Twas the Night before Christmas."Sing with the children such songs as“Jolly Old St. Nicholas,” “ Deck theHalls with Boughs of Holly,” and asmany beautiful Christmas carols as youknow or can find.6. The last thought is to be found in

a stanza from Christina Rosetti :“ What can I give Him

Poor as I am ?

If I were a shepherdI would bring a lamb ;

If I were a wise manI would do my part ;

Yet what I can I give him,—Give my heart.”

To-day let us read with the childrenMuhlenberg’s beautiful “Carol, Brothers,Carol/“t~"The Bird's Carol," and “Dame Dimple‘s Christ

mas,” are two pretty holiday gift books for children alittle older.1“ Franklin Square Song Collection," No. 3, page 57.

It could probably be found in almost any EpiscopalCollection ofChristmns Carols.

that is angels, sang to the shepherdsand the shepherds' hearts were full ofgladness. So we must feel as the angelsdid, and wish that Christmas morningmay be bright and sunny in every land,and what we must do is to make a merryChristmas for as many as we can, and wemust pray, that is, ask for, a merryChristmas and wish a Merry Christmasto all the world.“ ‘Let our hearts responding,

To the seraph band,Wish this morning’s sunshineBright in every land ;

Word and deed and prayerSpeed the grateful sound,

Wishing “ Merry Christmas !"All the world around.’ ”

—SU$AN P. CLEMENT, Racine, VVz's.

THE PIANOFORTE AND THE CHILD.W/zaz‘ are tone-pidures .? -

This must be understood before we canenter upon the subject of what steps mustbe taken to develop the powers to thinksuch things.We have seen that music is a form of

thought, but when we speak of formwhat do we mean ?

When you look at a picture, say theSistine Madonna, you say that is theform of the child, of Mary, as pictured,as conceived by the artist. But what dowe mean by form in this case ?

The very young child looks up at sucha picture but sees no form. There isonly a mass of color. What is the difference between the child’s perceptionand yours? Simply this, you perceivenot a mere mass of color, but larger orsmaller masses of colors or shades ofcolor. The boundaries of such massesform lines that stand in definite relationship to one another, and there is a repre

sentation of forms corresponding to suchas you have daily experienced.The more masses of color or shades

you can define and relale, the greater thenumber of forms you perceive, and thegreater the number of these individualforms in a given design, the greater thedifliculty of grasping their unity.Now if we perceived these forms with

vivid clearness we should be able notonly to clearly re-form them in thought,——that is, remember them,—but also represent them with color or in outline,with pencil. But most of us do notclearly and vividly perceive the outlinesof even the majority of things we say wesee, and countless numbers of beautiful

‘ forms pass before our eyes unseen.You have seen pansies by the hun

dreds, but how many people have sovivid a picture ofthe relation and boundaries of masses of color in a daisy, (inother words simple outlines) as to beable to re-present it on the blackboard bygiving a mere outline?Now I know you have heard this many

times, but I speak of it here because weshall see its relation later to the development of musical forms of thought.How often have you heard it said by a

listener at a concert: “Oh! I wish theywould play ‘something that had a tuneto it ; that was just a mass of sound.”Now, I am sorry to say, that too often

the “player” has given cause for such aremark, but supposing the piece to havebeen truly represented and interpreted,what is the difi'erence between the onewho made this remark and her neighborwho was truly delighted and heard verymany “tunes” P Just the difierence between the young child who looking atthe picture, saw no forms because unableto discern the outlines formed by massesof colors or shades of color, and you who

that is angels, sang to the shepherdsand the shepherds' hearts were full ofgladness.

To the seraph band,Wish this morning’s sunshineBright in every land ;
