Dear Parishioners, Fr. Murphy, Fr. Smith and I send our prayers and blessings as we begin a New Year. We pray that God will watch over you and your families throughout the year. Without a doubt, there is much to cause us concern, anxiety and worry. We must continue to trust in God and His Fatherly care for all of us. He has given us His Son Jesus and the Church to be our salvation, stronghold and guide. In moments of doubt and fear, reach out to our Lord and ask Him for tranquility and peace. I take this opportunity to thank you for your spiritual and financial support of the parish. It was heart warming to see so many of you at the Christmas Masses and to know that even more joined us on our livestream presentations. I was touched by your generosity to the Christmas collection as it exceeded my expectations. I also want to acknowledge your donations that are given on a regular basis. Your consistent support of the parish assists us in doing the work of the Church during these difficult financial times. I realize that you are facing significant financial challenges. In spite of this, I ask you to consider continuing your generosity to St. Mary’s. I am certainly aware that in some cases circumstances will prevent this from happening. If you are able, please consider maintaining your much appreciated contributions. Fr. Murphy, Fr. Smith, the Deacons and I lift you up to the Lord and pray that you will be blessed with a Holy and Healthy 2021. Gratefully yours in Christ, Father Dillingham Pastor

Special Adoration and Prayer time on Friday, January 29, 2021
Since the annual March for Life pilgrimage to Washington DC was canceled this year for in-person participation, please plan to attend a special Adoration and prayer time from 9am - 12pm in our church. Though it will begin after the daily 8:30am Mass, you may come for a visit any time until noon. This is a mighty way to pray for the victims of abortion and the healing and repentance that they need; for our country’s laws to protect human life rather than allow for the destruction of babies; for mothers to be trusting that God will always provide for them; and for our nation to turn to God daily and ask His forgiveness for this tragedy in our nation. Since the 1973 U.S. Supreme Court decisions of Roe vs. Wade and Doe vs. Bolton, there have been over 65 MILLION babies killed by abortion in our country! The Adoration time will include Rosary, Stations, of the Cross, Adoration of the Holy Eucharist with private meditation, and Benediction. You may watch the March for Life in DC via marchfor-life.org.

Jesus, I love You. O my God. I cannot receive You in Holy Communion. Come, nevertheless, and visit me with Your grace. Come spiritually into my heart. Purify it. Sanctify it. Render it like unto Your own. Amen.

Did you Know? Titles of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the Litany of
Loreto Holy Mary, Mother of God
Mary is Mother of God because She is the mother of Jesus, and Jesus is God. True God and True Man. The title “Mother of God” is found in the second part of the Hail Mary prayer, and comes from the Greek word “Theotokos” which literally means “the one who bears God” and has been in use by Christians since the 200s in the Holy Land. In the year 431 AD, at the Third Ecumenical Council of all of the Bishops of the Church, held in the ancient city of Ephesus, the Church Fathers Proclaimed the First Dogma of Our Lady, that Mary is “Mother of God.” There was great, great rejoicing when the Bishops, following the lead of St. Cyril of Alexandria, proclaimed Mary the Mother of God. But some Bishops resisted and joined the Nestorian heresy. Within two centuries, their lands and Churches would be overwhelmed by the new Islam Religion. If you want to remain strong and steadfast in the faith, repeat many times a day, Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us! Fr. Francis Hoffman, JCD Submitted by the Legion of Mary
FEAST OF FAITH The Penitential Rite Standing together in the presence of the Lord, we acknowledge our weakness, our sins and faults and failings. But the penitential rite is really less about our sins than it is about God’s mercy. It is not a time for individual confession, like a mini-sacrament of reconciliation. It is, rather, a preparatory rite, preparing us to praise the mercy of Christ as we acknowledge our own weakness. When Simon Peter witnesses the miraculous catch of fish—when he realizes who is in the boat with him—he falls at Jesus’ feet with the words, “Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man” (Luke 5:8). We are like Peter. The more aware of the Lord’s presence we become, the more awareness we also have of our sinfulness, our weakness. The penitential rite of the Mass takes several forms, from the traditional Confiteor or “I confess” to a litany, spoken or sung by the deacon or cantor with responses by the entire assembly. The penitential rite always includes the words Kyrie, eleison; Christe, eleison—Lord, have mercy; Christ, have mercy. This ancient Greek prayer came to the Roman liturgy from the East, and still echoes in many of the litanies of the Eastern Rite Churches. These words turn our gaze from our own weakness to the gentleness, the kindness, the forgiving love of Christ.
A NEW DAY DAWNS Today we hear how Jonah, sent by God to warn the people, storms through the streets of Nineveh, scaring the citizens out of their wits. And it works! God has a change of heart, seeing “by their actions” how the people turn from evil (Jonah 3:10). A new day dawns. Next we hear Paul telling the Corinthians, “The world in its present form is passing away” (1 Corinthians 7:31). He calls for a change of heart. Stopping short of telling them to stop carrying out their everyday activities, he urges them—rather mysteriously—to live “as though” they aren’t doing the things they are doing. A new day has dawned. Finally, Jesus stands on the shore and cries, “The kingdom of God is at hand!” (Mark 1:14). Simon and Andrew abandon their nets—and even their father—and follow him. A new day had dawned. Everyone has to change when a new day dawns: the Ninevites, the Corinthians, the apostles, even Jesus! Didn’t a new day dawn today for us as well?

FAITH ENVIRONMENT/SAFE ENVIRONMENT
Did you know that in 2003 in response to the United States Conference of Bishops’ Charter for the Protection of Children, the Diocese developed a safe environment program entitled For the Sake of Gods’ Children? The Bishop, all priests, deacons, seminarians, religious brothers and sisters and all lay employees and volunteers participate in the program to assure that a comprehensive safe environment exists in our parishes, schools and institutions. In this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus says: “Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.” As disciples, we are called to continue God’s work on earth. Taking care of God’s poor is indeed living gospel values.
Last month, through your gifts, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul was able to assist 22 families, providing $7,800 in aid for food utility, rent and other bills. May God Bless You!
