Course in Depth

What will I study?This Fastrack course comprises two modules, one ofwhich is related to your subject choice while the otherfocuses on study skills training.

The subject you study on Fastrack will have a close link tothe degree that you progress onto but may not match itexactly. For example, you can study Biology as yourFastrack subject and progress onto a degree in Biology orrelated areas such as Biomedical Science, Ecology andConservation, Genetics, and Plant Science.

Whichever Fastrack subject you choose, you will receiveguidance in essay writing, taking and arranging notes,reading effectively, report writing, presentation skills,time management, working in groups, action planning,reflective writing and confidence building.

You will also gain an introduction to ICT covering basic ITawareness, using University systems, word processingand developing visual presentations.

How will I study?Teaching is through lectures, tutorials, small group workand practical sessions. You will be allocated a personaltutor and have access to a wide range of services andfacilities, including the University library, computerhardware and software, ICT/Internet access and mediafacilities.

You can expect to be in University from 10am until 3pm,Monday to Friday. There will be morning and afternoonsessions with a one-hour break for lunch.

If you are joining a Fastrack subject in initial teachertraining, one day per week across a four-week period willbe spent undertaking a placement in a school. The hourson these days will depend on the school you are in andwill usually be the normal school hours. We willendeavour to ensure that the school in which yourplacement takes place is no more than 90 minutes travelfrom your term time address.

How will I be assessed?You will be assessed through assignments, projects andcoursework. You must also achieve a minimumattendance threshold of 90%.

There are no formal written examinations as part of thecurrent assessment methods on this programme.

Who will be teaching me?The programme is delivered by a team of tutors who areexperienced in teaching and supporting adults returningto education.

Everything you could want is on one site, from fantasticmodern spaces in which you can study and socialise,nearly 2,500 rooms in halls of residence, and 60 acres ofsport and leisure facilities.

There is also a University library which stocks around200,000 items, including books, journals, e-resources andmultimedia. In addition, you can access PCs, laptops,

software and assistive technologies. Dedicated support isavailable for students with Specific Learning Difficulties(SpLD).

Entry Criteria

Entry RequirementsFormal entry qualifications are not typically required tojoin this Fastrack programme. However, if you areeducated to GCSE standard this would be beneficial. Ifyou can show that you are committed to studying for adegree and demonstrate the skills and potential, forexample through relevant work/life experience, then wewill offer you a place. An interview forms part of theselection process.

All Fastrack applicants must demonstrate a level ofcompetency in written English. This can be shownthrough GCSE English or GCSE English Language atGrade C or Grade 4 or above, or Level 2 Literacy orequivalent, prior to interview. In lieu of this, we will testyour competency in written English as part of therecruitment process.

To study Secondary Mathematics as your Fastracksubject, an AS Level (or equivalent) in Mathematics isrequired.

Applicants to Fastrack initial teacher training, Nursingand Operating Department Practice subjects would alsobenefit from having some experience in a relevantsetting, demonstrated through employment, volunteeringor observation. In addition to this, you should possess anawareness of your chosen career pathway and have astrong interest in your chosen sector.

Depending on the degree you wish to study on successfulcompletion of Fastrack, additional progression criteriamay apply which must be satisfied before a place on yourintended degree can be confirmed.

Career Prospects

What are my career prospects?Fastrack: Preparation for Higher Education is designed toequip you, in just seven weeks, with the skills andknowledge required to study on an Edge Hill Universitydegree or foundation degree in a selected subject area.The specific programme(s) you may be eligible toprogress onto will be determined by the Fastrack subjectyou choose.

Please note, however, that while we expect manycandidates who successfully complete a Fastrack courseto proceed onto a relevant degree at Edge Hill University,the availability of a suitable progression route andacceptance onto this course, or other degrees, cannot beguaranteed.

Depending on the degree you wish to apply for, additionalprogression criteria may also apply. Some potentialprogression routes, for example, including initial teachertraining programmes and Psychology degrees, stipulatethat you must have GCSE English, GCSE Mathematicsand/or GCSE Science at Grade C or Grade 4 or above (or

equivalent). If you do not already have these GCSEs, EdgeHill University offers equivalency tests.

Some degrees will also require you to undergo DBSEnhanced Disclosure prior to progressing onto theprogramme. For initial teacher training students, the DBSrequirement also applies to the Fastrack course, withclearance usually carried through to the start of yourdegree. For other subjects, DBS Enhanced Disclosure isnot required in order to undertake the Fastrackprogramme but may be required to progress to yourpreferred degree. Further information will be supplied toyou at the relevant time.

You should also be aware that this Fastrack course isdesigned to enable progression onto a degree at Edge HillUniversity and may not be accepted by other institutions.

Finance

Tuition FeesThe Fastrack programme is free of charge to UK studentsjoining the course in academic years 2021/22 or 2022/23.

EU/EEA and Swiss students who have settled orpre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme, aswell as Irish nationals, may also be eligible to join theprogramme free of charge.

Financial SupportIf you are studying Fastrack face-to-face, attendingtaught sessions on campus, we may be able to assist youwith funding while you are enrolled on the Fastrackcourse.

This funding, which you will not need to pay back,includes financial contributions towards travel expenses,childcare costs and/or accommodation fees (if you livesome distance from the University and wish to stay in ourhalls of residence, subject to availability). Eligibilitycriteria apply.

An additional scholarship which you can apply for isspecifically for Fastrack students, rewarding significantpromise and progress, perhaps in the face of adversity.

If your application for a scholarship is successful you canexpect to receive the scholarship while studying yoursubsequent degree.

How to ApplyThere is an online application process for thisprogramme.

The June 2022 intake is for progression onto thecorresponding degree starting in September 2022.

When you submit an application, you will be asked tospecify your choice of Fastrack subject and intendedprogression route.

We will process a UCAS application for your intendeddegree on your behalf once you have completed theFastrack programme.
