Exclusive STRUX® Design Offers One-of-a-Kind Performance

ur high-performance STRUX fasteners

offer a stronger and more reliable assembly

alternative to traditional clinch studs and nuts.

Along with stud and nut applications, the

STRUX design can be applied to joints that

require self-tapping fasteners. In most cases,

a STRUX fastening solution will yield significant

time and cost savings when compared to

welded or other staked fasteners.

Improved Joint Integrity. Fewer Failures. Lower Costs.

◆ Typically more expensive toinstall

◆ Flash build-up in threads, whichrequires re-tapping

◆ Possible distortion of mating partcaused by heat build-up duringwelding

◆ Hidden micro-cracks in the weld

Installation of the STRUX nut is essentially the same asthe STRUX stud. The retaining ring passes through thehole and as the displacement lobes seat, the engage-ment material flows into the retaining groove. However, the nut is supported by a spring loaded finder to ensureproper nut set. As the nut is staked, the finder retracts.

◆ Any equipment capable offeeding rivets, weld fasteners orconventional clinch fastenerswill work with STRUX fasteners

◆ Production rates can be greatlyincreased

◆ Assembly costs are reduced

3

◆ STRUX fasteners are heat treatedfor greater strength

◆ Fast and easy inspection; allowsnon-destructive testing

◆ The STRUX design ensures pre-determined performance values

◆ Allows you to work with platedparts and dissimilar materials

◆ Can be used in material as thinas 1mm (.040") and smaller

The stud end is fed through a punched or drilled holeand into a lower die. A punch then applies force to thestud. As this occurs, the retaining ring passes throughthe hole. As pressure is applied, the displacement lobesare seated, forcing the engagement material into theretaining groove.

STRUX Clinch Studs Increase Productivity and Reliability

ustom-engineered STRUX clinch studs

give you a cost-effective, high-performance

alternative to other staked or welded products.

They are designed for maximum resistance to

push-out and rotation, and are a perfect match

for critical, high-production applications. STRUX

studs eliminate problems associated with weld

studs such as poor product consistency,

excessive equipment costs, the need for

adequate ventilation and environmental hazards.

STRUXTITE® Clinch Nut Boosts Performance Characteristics

ou can realize enhanced performance

in your clinch nut applications with our

unique combination of a Struxtite clinch nut

and Taptite® II thread-forming fastener.

Matching the nut and bolt in this way forms a

precise fit. This combination results in proper

material relaxation, and also eliminates the

need for a special anti-loosening feature.

THE STRUXTITE CONFIGURATION

The Struxtite nut is a standard STRUX clinch nutwhich is unhardened and untapped to allow theTaptite II fastener to roll form mating threads inthe nut and strengthen the joint through workhardening. This provides:

◆ A more reliable structural joint

◆ Optimum thread engagement

◆ Consistent clamp generation

◆ Elimination of cross threading

STRUXTITE NUT ELIMINATES WELDING

The Struxtite nut eliminates welding operationsand is custom-engineered to meet your require-ments for efficiency, performance and assembly.

◆ Tapping costs are eliminated with the thread-forming fastener

◆ Total in-place costs are further loweredthrough the single-source supply of thisunique combination

RE S I S T S PU S H-OU T & RO TAT I O N

As the Struxtite nut is pressed into the engage-ment material, the displacement lobes force thematerial into the retaining groove for a solid,rotation-resistant assembly.

◆ Retention of the Struxtite nut far surpasses theopposing forces created when the Taptite IIfastener is driven into the nut

◆ Push-out and torsional resistance are limitedonly by the shear strength of the engagementmaterial

INCREASES RESISTANCE TO LOOSENING

The Taptite II fastener provides prevailing torquethat meets locking screw standards IFI 124 & 524,because the tapped material relaxes into therelief areas between the threads.

◆ Lower drive torque than other tapping screws

◆ Excellent drive-to-fail ratios

◆ More consistent transfer of torque into tension

Designed for Demanding Applications

9

The self-clinching STRUX design can often eliminate the space required for awrenching surface. This is useful in areas where the backside of the mating material is inaccessible to hand-wrenching—seat belt attachments on a car flooris one example. Once a STRUX product is installed, push-out and torsionalstrength are limited only by the shear strength of the engagement material.

Applications utilizing the STRUX product can provide lower in-place cost throughimproved joint integrity, fewer failures and more consistent performance. Theycan be engineered to match your specific requirements, and are backed by thelargest fastener supplier in the world.

In applications requiring multiple studs or nuts, the STRUX concept can easily beapplied to component sub-assemblies. The combination of studs and/or nuts intocarrier designs facilitates prepositioning of fasteners during final assembly. Theseassemblies can ease assembly operations, lower installation costs and improveproductivity.

DEMANDING APPLICATIONS

Performance of the STRUX designhas been outstanding in thedemanding world of automotiveapplications. It has also beensuccessfully applied in the powertool, lawn & garden, and applianceindustries. While STRUX productsare highly versatile, they are bestmatched to critical applicationsthat require a high level ofassembly strength and jointintegrity.

STRUX CL I N C H NU T S

Like the STRUX stud, the STRUXnut’s features provide a highlyrotation-resistant assembly. Theflowing of the engagement mate-rial into the retaining groove andaround the lobes is assurance ofjoint integrity. In addition, boththe STRUX stud and nut create aclean appearance, free fromexcess material and splash.

STRUX CL I N C H ST U D S

Upon installation, the displace-ment lobes and retaining grooveof the STRUX stud combine toform a solid, rotation-resistantassembly. The product features aredesigned to effectively lock thematerial into place by creatingmaterial flow into the groove andaround the lobes.

Our Products Work for You

Improved Engagement ♦

A manufacturer of automotive air bags required a lightweight fastener with optimum torsional strength to assemble soft aluminum material. The conventional STRUX shape was modified with underhead lugs, replacing the familiar TORX® shape. This provided better engagement in the soft metal and offered excellent resistance to rotation. In addition, this process allowed better control of bracket flatness which was sometimes altered during installation.

Improved Assembly Line Productivity ♦ The original customer design of a one piece nut with a tapped extrusion, for use in an air bag module, was too costly. Working together with another division of Acument™ Global Technologies, Camcar developed a cost-effective combination of a STRUX clinch nut with a tri-lobular design staked into a larger washer. The new design also matched the drive size of another part used by the customer, standardizing tools on their assembly line.

Increased Joint Integrity ♦

Due to the thinness of the sheet metal in an automotive component, adequate thread engagement of the mating bolt could not be achieved. Through the use of a Struxtite nut and Taptite thread-forming fastener, optimum thread engagement was made possible. This assembly also allowed drive torque and seating torque to be more easily controlled, and the necessary clamp load was achieved with minimal strip-out.

Customized Design ♦

Camcar offers a number of specially-designed STRUX fasteners to satisfy varied fastening requirements. For example, an automotive manufacturerneeded to hold together two pieces of material in a seat frame application fortransportation to a final assembly area. To solve this problem, a special, double-grooved stud was designed. This allowed one stud to hold the second piece of material in place while firmly attached to the base material.
