    1 Application Scope

    This document describes the feature Fast WCDMA Reselection at 2G CS Call Release(GU

    Fast Return) for GBSS 13.0 , which is used to reduce the duration for MSs to camp on GSM cells,

    shorten the selection time from 2G to 3G after call release at 2G.

    The trial of this document was performed in XXX Operator for the sole purpose of delivering

    PIP#1 feature project. Information contained in this document shall not be disclosed to any party

    unless it is expressly authorized by Huawei.

    2 Overview of Fast WCDMA Reselection at 2G CS Call Release

    Feature

    2.1 Summary

    When an MS terminates a call in the GSM network, it camps on the UMTS network

    according to the cell selection indicator after release information in the Channel Release message

    instead of cell reselection from GSM to UMTS. The previously mentioned UMTS network

    includes the UTRAN FDD and the UTRAN TDD.

    2.2 Benefits

    The cell reselection of the MS is accelerated. The MS can obtain services from the UMTS

    network immediately after the call is released from the GSM network.

    2.3 Description

    In general, when the MS terminates a call in the GSM network, it camps on the cell in which

    the call is released and then starts the measurement related to the cell reselection. When a UMTSneighboring cell meets the requirements for cell reselection, the MS camps on the UMTS network

    after the cell reselection. The UMTS cell reselection is initiated after the MS receives the system

    information and performs the related calculation. In this case, the time for the MS to access the

    UMTS network is prolonged.

    When the Fast UMTS Reselection at GSM CS Call Release feature is enabled, the BSS

    figures out the best UMTS neighboring cell based on the measurement information on the UMTS

    neighboring cells after the MS in the GSM network terminates a CS call. Then, the BSS sends the

    MS the frequency information on the cell through the Channel Release message to instruct it to

    camp on the UMTS cell. In this way, the MS can camp on a UMTS cell without related calculation,

    thus accelerating cell reselection.

    2.4 Impact

    2.4.1 Impact on System Capacity

    The Fast WCDMA Reselection at 2G CS Call Release feature reduces the duration for MSs

    to camp on GSM cells and decreases the number of times that the MSs initiate services in GSM

    cells. This increases the overall capacities of the GSM and WCDMA networks.

    2.4.2 Impact on Network Performance

    This feature allows MSs to reselect WCDMA cells after releasing calls in GSM cells. This

    decreases the number of location updates and increases the CS paging success rate.

    2.5 Prerequisites

    Dependencies on Hardware

    This feature does not have any special requirements for hardware.

    Dependencies on Other Features

    This feature does not depend on other features.

    The network involves the GSM network and the WCDMA network.

    The UE supports the GSM and WCDMA frequency bands at the same time.

    3 Feature Test

    3.1 Test methods and tools

    Objective

    To verify that the MS preferentially camps on a 3G cell after the 2G call is released.

    Tools:

    Laptop with M2000 and WebLMT

    Test phone: Iphone4

    Procedure:

    Procedure Expected Result

    1 Activate the feature in the 2G cells

    where the test locate at.The feature was activated successfully

    2 Make a call where the 3G signal is poor

    and the phone camps on 2G The call is established successfully under

    2G

    3 Move to the place where 3G signal is

    strong enough and release the call

    The call is released successfully. The MS

    camps on the 3G cell within 10s.

    4 Trace the signaling flow over the single

    user CS trace in 2G and the UU interface in

    3G.

    The downlink Channel Release message

    traced on the single user CS trace in 2G

    carries the information element

    cell-selection-indicator-after-release .

    And UU interface in 3G carries the

    message RRC_UL_DIR_TRANSF .

    5 Deactivate the feature and repeat steps

    2 to 4.

    The reselection time from 2G to 3G is

    longer than 30s and there are no

    cell-selection-indicator-after-release

    From above pictures, we can see that there have 3G neighbor cells in 2G measurement result

    message, and the UE reselect to 3G 7 seconds after the call released from 2G. There have

    cell-selection-indicator-after-release information element and target 3G cell information in

    channel release message.

    There are no cell-selection-indicator-after-release information element in channel release

    message.

    3.3 Conclusion

    The GU fast return feature can reduce the selection time after call release from 2G to 3G,

    reduce the duration for MSs to camp on GSM cells and decreases the number of times that theMSs initiate services in GSM cells.

    4.3.4 Comparison

    From above pictures, we can see that,

    The 3G signal occupation is 21.6% before the feature is activated; the 3G signal occupation is

    69.7% after the feature is activated.

    From the results above we can see that the percentage of 3G increased after implementing the

    feature, because the feature shortens the selection time from 2G to 3G after call release at 2G.

    5 Conclusion

    We can see from the feature test results that the feature reduces the duration for MSs to camp

    on GSM cells, shortens the selection time from 2G to 3G after call release at 2G.
