    FAST-THE NEW FACE OF SECURITY

A new system scans crowds for the biological cues that precipitate crime. As you make your way through the security check point of the 2020 los angeles motorshow, visions of hydrogen sports cars and solar cars occupy your mind. Not so for the well-

dressed 22-year-old man behind you.He plans to set off a bomb at that place. But minute

irregularities in his body temperature, heart rate and sweat content betray his netarious intentionsand triggers alarms, alerting security before he even enters the building.

Thats how the U.S. Department of Homeland Security hopes its newcamera- and sensor-based threat monitor, called Future Attribute Screening Technology,orFAST

will work. The system operates on the theory that a person planning a malicious attack willdisplay measurable biological cues that expose him/her.FAST aims to eventually be able to

analyze pupil dilation speech patterns and even pheromone (chemicals capable of acting outsidethe body of the secreting individual to impact the behavior of the receiving individual) levels.

But a question arises, what if youre innocently nervous or angry? Working

in theatrical concerts, the systems multiple sensors, including more-conventional bomb

detectors, should able to discern between someone whos an imminent threat and a person whosjust having a bad day or butterflies in his stomach.

    FAST HAS YOU COVERED:-

(A)EYES:- Cameras detect slight alterations in pupil size, blink rate and directional of gaze.(B)HEART:-A laser radar called BioLIDAR measures heart rate and changes in the interval

between heart beats.(C)LUNGS:-BioLIDAR monitors the frequency and depth of respiration by tracking micro-

movements in the neck, cheeks and face.(D)SKIN:-Thermal cameras gauge changes in skin temperature and texture to determine stress

    levels.

(E)BODY LANGUAGE:-Video cameras capture non-verbal behavioural cues ,such as gestures

and gait changes that indicate malicious intent.

PHEROMONES:-Scientists are working on a sensor to detect the chemicals the body expels

    under stress.

Department of Homeland Security ran a test in September of 140 volunteers using a FASTprototype. The system was very accurately able to pick out people with hostile intent. "We're still

very early on in this research, but it is looking very promising," says DHS science spokesman

John Verrico. "We are running at about 78% accuracy on mal-intent detection, and 80% ondeception."

Whether, this technology will revolutionize security and prevent terrorists planning 9/11 or

26/11 attacks in the near future.Only time will tell.
