3 Entry #1: Article from W Magazine March 13, 2013 PUMP THE VOLUME April 2013 : When designers and fashion stylists want big hair for their shoots and shows, Jimmy Paul is the man they call. “I’m always looking for ways to make hair bigger,” says Paul. “And I’m always trying to adapt my pro tricks for real life.”

To that end, he has been working with the lab coats at Bumble and bumble, where he’s been an editorial stylist since 2002. The payoff: the new Bb Thickening Full Form Mousse, which contains polymers that plump up strands; and Thickening Creme Contour, which adds dimension and shine. The products join Bumble and bumble’s Thickening Spray, a best-seller, and in July the collection will be rounded out with Dryspun Finish, a spritz that re-poofs day-old styles. Paul used all four to create this wild mane but says that you can achieve a similar effect with just the mousse. “Finger-comb a dollop into damp hair, bend over, and scrunch it to coax some waves, then let it air-dry,” he instructs. http://www.wmagazine.com/beauty/2013/04/big-hair-beauty-trend

When it comes to runway and editorials, hair is always must - and big hair at that! A man the name of Jimmy Paul is a lead stylist and he has been working with Bumble and Bumble, to create the perfect product that holds the "goods". And he as finally made the perfect product, with BB of course - Thickening Full Form Moose. There also will be an upcoming collection that will complete the look. And he also give the best styling tip: Finger-comb a dollop into damp hair, bend over, and scrunch it to coax some waves, then let it air-dry.

I think it's interesting how big hair has always been in style to some degree, whether it be from high end to everyday use. And we saw big hair in the 60s and big hair stayed in through the decades, even till now. I remember, about 6 years ago, when the "bump" was back in - so, 1960s. But how big is this guy talking about - is there really no moose out there that will hold... that sounds asinine.

4 Entry #2: Selected article from Newsweek March 13, 2013

Dolce & Gabbana's Hefty Fine: Dolce & Gabbana has been fined 343.4 million euros (roughly $440.2 million) by Italy’s Tax Commission, plus additional interest fees, WWD reports. The charge follows a first degree sentence by the Italian Supreme Court in November 2011 that condemned the Italian company for alleged tax evasion in conjunction with the sale of the Dolce & Gabbana and D&G brands to holding firm Gado Srl in 2004, reportedly to avoid higher taxes. The hefty fine marks the denial of an appeal by co-founders Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana. The designers can still potentially avert the fine if they choose to appeal again. Saint Laurent’s New Muse: Hedi Slimane brought the ‘90s back with Saint Laurent’s grunge inspired fall collection and now the French label reportedly has a new face for the lost decade: Marilyn Manson. The dark rock musician appears to star in the brand’s spring ad campaign for menswear, according to a photo Nicola Formichetti posted on his Tumblr page. http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2013/04/01/dolce-gabbana-s-hefty-tax-fine-marilyn-manson-stars-in-saint-laurent-campaign.html

Dolce and Gabbana has just been fined 400+ Million Dollars, for tax invasion that occurred in the year of 2004. And the article jumps to - this spring's line concept - Grunge. Marilyn Manson will actually be headlining this campaign.

This article, in a way, did not make any sense, in separate contexts they make sense, but to have them both on the same page is a bit random besides the face that they are about Dolce & Gobbana... Something must have happened recently, for Italy to barely charge the label for wrong doings that had occurred nine years before. And who knew that the 1990s grunge scene would come back into play - and who better than the king of Grunge, himself, Marilyn Manson to be in the Spring Campaign!

5 Entry #3: Vogue Article May 14, 2013

This February of 2013 article in Vogue (American), talks about the latest and hottest trends that are purses... "this season's most vibrant structured handbags". The article featured a handbag from Calvin Klein, The Smith, Spazzolato, Proenza Schouler, Nancy Gonzales, The Row, Kate Spade, Marc Jacobs, and Michael Kors - - all of these bags have the color of white and two were both made from a reptile.

Kate Spade, white and black purse

Michael Kors, blue and white flap purse

Nancy Gonzales, features a green laser-cut crocodile bag

The Row, a shade of green alligator purse

6 Entry #4: Making a fashion observation of Spring 2013 March 18, 2013 For about the past two years, the trend in denim and pants, for men and woman is the cuffed bottom at the ankle. And I believe this came into fashion trends because the "cycling" trend came in - basically have a bike and riding it everywhere... that trend came in - that it is cool to have a "FIXIE". And when you ride a bike, cyclist tend to cuff their right pant to make sure it won't get caught in the chain. So that is how and why this cuffed pant came into the fashion trends. And what I have noticed this Spring, is that denim brands are making denim lengths at the ankle rather than a normal length that needs to cuffed. Last Spring cuffing to the ankle length was in, now owning denim that is cut at the ankle is what's in! Anthropologie's and GAP's main piece this spring is actually their ankle length denim - the Stevie and the Skimmer.

7 Entry #5: 3 Trends at a department store May 14, 2013 White Pants - White Sheets Striped Men's Tops - Striped Bedding and Art Work Commuter Backpacks - "Restored" furniture The tradition white pants in the spring and summer, that comes in the texture of linen and denim with the details of white and even yellow/gold stitching. For the most part, the sizes came on skinny and straight/slim straight. And of course, this classic white linen pants, also transferred all to the classic white bedding. Many would say that with men's white bottoms, it has a very nautical feel, and with that, many light men's sweater with variations of blue and white stripes. These colors also came up frequently in boys bedding - such as quilts and duvet covers, many of the soft good for boys had stripes of shades of blue. A trend coming up in fashion for men, is the use of commuter backpacks with leather straps and the embellishment, and they are coming in various colors other than, brown and black. The backpacks have a rugged aesthetic to them, and they actually pair very well with all the furniture that is from reclaimed wood that is also very raw.

8 Entry #6: WGSN Reporting on Backpacks May 14, 2013 Given the fact that the backpacks were the newest trend in men's accessories - I found some great articles on WGSN, that trend reported some new backpacks for men and women designed by Hermes and Marc Jacobs for the Spring and Summer season - some of leather and some of canvas. Another article feature the new fashion "cult" that is, Herschel Supply Co, which is a Canadian based backpack brand, of canvas bags and leather embellishments.

11 Entry #8: WGSN on European trends May 14, 2013 Around Europe, right now, it seems that the latest fashion trends are rough yet sensual garments. Various designers for the Summer and Spring seasons had designed various tops of different shapes and silhouettes of a stiff leather type material that has a "cut" in the middle of the top, and this cut would have the lining shown at the slit, to reveal, lace or some kind of linen fabric. I feel that in the coming seasons, this trend will come more into a more masculine form of a jacket, with the same texture and shapes, but without the slit, due to the actual season will no longer be spring or summer.

12 Entry #9: Visual Displays on State Street March 23, 2013 The first Visual Display I would like to examine is the window dressings for H&M (these photos are for the State Street location, here in Chicago.) H&M always divides their display windows by men and woman. Their left window is the woman's. This is actual my favorite display of the two... When it comes to retail, I am all about lifestyle merchandising... and H&M is not one of those merchants, so I tend to just brush off H&M on my shopping experiences. But this time, they caught my eye by what it seems to me - the attempt to have a lifestyle brand through their windows. Here we four body forms with four distinct looks, above that, is a light sign with a name of a character for each of the body forms and then behind is a photo shoot of the four models that bring these dressings to life. And I think it really great that H&M is trying to identify their customer by four distinct characters/lifestyles.

The next window displays I would like to showcase are the windows for the lifestyle brand, Urban Outfitters. For this season, I like the variation of designs of the window decals, as well as the various backdrops that are suspended behind the mannequins. What is interesting about the URBN corporation, is that all of their retail brands, always have great window displays, but the mannequins themselves don't quite draw you in but rather the conceptual window dressings that give off a certain vibe is what brings you in. And in this case, I love the casual yet loud vibes I get from looking at their spring window displays, and not only does it showcase apparel, but accessories and home products. - - really going for that, "lifestyle brand".

16 Entry #10: New Movie and possible fashion trends April 2, 2013 The hit movie that is going to start the "it" movies for summer 2013 is going is The Great Gatsby directed by Baz Lurhmann. And I believe this film will be the jump for many men and woman fashion trends - from fitted suits for men to flowey, tunic, like dresses that just say "roaring twenties" for women... Us as consumers always bring styles from the past and that was very visible these past four years-or-so with the rise in popularity with AMC's Emmy winning show Mad Men, the Mod look from the sixties for men's suit fashions and woman's tight yet flirty dresses came in the style very quickly, and we may just be heading on that same track with inspirations from The Great Gatsby... Tiffany & Co. has already designed accessories that are very much the style of the 1920s - who know what will come next?!

17 Entry #11: Firstview.com April 3, 2013 This design is by Tommy Hilfiger - his Fall/Winter 2012 collection. I feel strongly about saying that Nordstrom or Bloomingdale's would carry this design (the jacket) in their store nationwide. Though this entire model is styled in Tommy Hilfiger designs from head-to-toe, I feel there is strong emphasis on the jacket - it is such a statement piece. What really draws me to this jacket to much is the fact that its essence is a classic men's leather jacket but with modern details- such as it's olive/green color and navy embellishments. What is really great, is how the garment's silhouette is very straight clean lines but the embellishments on the front face of the jacket are all in various directions, going against the natural lines of the jacket.

18 Entry #12: Fashion Career Descriptions April 18, 2013 Buyer: a buyer is the selected person/persons who selects what items will be sold in a given store, based on his/her/their predictions about what will be popular with shoppers. Retail buyers usually work closely with designers and wholesalers and fashion shows to observe trends. They may work for department stores, chain stores or smaller stores. There are different levels of superiority such as trainee buyers, assistant buyers, senior buyers and buying managers, and buying directors. Product Development Manager: This job has an overview of the whole company with the aim of moving the brand forward by spotting new fashion trends and vast of growth which will be profitable for the brand. They basically are responsible for the creation of new products. He/she will expand business with existing customers and develop new customer bases, manage external development and research partners, and find new opportunities to create constant competitors to brands like its own. Fashion Designer: this person is considered to be an artist and craftsman - they are influenced by cultural and social events. Fashion designers work in a number of ways in designing garments. Some work alone or as part of a team. They attempt to satisfy consumer desire for aesthetically designed clothing; and, because of the time required to bring a garment onto the market, must at times adapt to consumers. Some clothes are made specifically for an individual, as in the case of couture or tailoring.

21 Entry #14: Three possible career opportunities April 25, 2013 Even though I have only been part of the retail industry for eight months, I have purely enjoyed it, and I am all ready talking with my current employers about my "future" with them right after graduation... Manager In Training (Anthropologie): the "MIT" position at Anthropolgie is one that can take in two different routes, one of visual and the other in the operations department. Overall, these two sectors creating a world for her to be immersed in. The MIT is a position that last about three months - they get one to one training with the different managers in store to see what it takes to become a manager. The position doesn't quite require retail nor fashion experience due to the fact they believe anyone can physically do the job but rather they look to see if you are a lifestyle fit - thee anthro lifestyle. Manger in Training (Abercrombie & Fitch): the MIT position only last about 10 weeks and has different training areas, in sales and in merchandising. From the start, you must decide the path that is right for you. In this case - merchandising. Though A&F isn't seen as such a glamorous fashion empire or if they still even exist - I am all about lifestyle branding and immersive experiences, and they are one of the few that excel in the lifestyle they want their customers to live out (just like Anthro). And the MIT in merchandising will get to work in tangent with district and in store managers to manager and create that immersive lifestyle. Opening Processer (Abercrombie & Fitch): this job being from New Albany, Ohio - they will be in charge of the design and vitalization of new retail locations. Just how in the early 2000s, there were new A&F locations popping up in every mall, this is what is starting in Europe and Asia - by 2016 there will be 500 new locations in those continents. This is the perfect job for a college graduate who is young and wants to travel. With the opening of two Anthropologie's and one Gap, this will be the perfect job for me.
