FARNHAM TOWN FOOTBALL CLUB CHRISTMAS DRAW TICKETS ARE NOW AVAILABLE!

FROM THE CHAIRMAN RAY BRIDGER

FROM THE MANAGER PAUL TANNER

Today we welcome the players, officials and supporters of Ash United FC to the Memorial Ground and we hope they enjoy their short stay with us. It seems a while since our last game and with this being the first of some local derbies coming up over the festive period, three points would be a great result.

I hope you enjoy the game. Lets get behind the lads!

A poor performance last time out at home in the cup against Chertsey Town. The players embarrassed themselves and that will not happen again. When we have had a poor attitude and performance in the past I have had a reaction from my players in the next fixture to put some wrongs right.

We now have a run of 4 league games before the year closes. I know what we need from those games to put us in a good position for 2013 and we will endeavour to get there, hopefully starting today.

Thank you for your continued support.

CLUB HISTORY | ASH UNITED FC

ASH UNITED FOOTBALL CLUB was founded in 1911 and started playing their first competitive matches at Ash Common. Ash United soon became well established in the Surrey Intermediate League, winning every honour possible. After the Second World War Ash United restructured and in the 1947/48 seasons they had the most successful season in their short history, winning the League Championship and four-cup competitions. Ash United had to wait almost twenty years for their next successful campaign. During the 1966/67 seasons Ash United dominated the Surrey Intermediate Premier “A” League, winning the title with only two points being dropped out of a possible fifty two. As the points suggest, Ash United’s achievements included a long unbeaten record with 121 goals for and only 19 against. Not to be outdone the reserve team also had a terrific season. They won the Division “A” title and scored an amazing 137 goals in only 26 games, an average of 5 per game and some incredible scores. With the first team and the reserves doing well this gave the club a good squad of players, all competing for first team places. In 1968 Ash United won promotion to the Surrey Senior League, and in their first season they finished runners up, and also finished as runners-up in the cup. This successful start in the Surrey Senior League came to an abrupt end in 1971 when Ash United were forced to change grounds, this meant they lost their place in the Senior league and had to drop into the Aldershot League. Ash United managed to find a new permanent home with the co-operation of the local council at Shawfield Road, which remains their home to date. Having a permanent home meant that Ash United United were re-admitted to the Surrey Senior League. During the late 1970’s Ash United had several successful seasons, in the 1977/78 season Ash United won the Charity Cup defeating Dorking 2-1 in the final, the following season Ash United finish runners-up in the newly named Combined Counties League as well as reaching the finals of the Philips Football Floodlighting Competition. It took Ash United several years before they managed to win the Combined Counties League, which they eventually won in the 1981/82 seasons. Ash United also finished runners-up in the Concours Trophy and the George Allen Trophy during that year. The 1984/85 seasons saw Ash United getting through to the quarterfinals of the Surrey Senior Cup as well as being runners-up in the Concours Trophy again. During the 1985/86 season Ash United had a creditable run in the FA Vase, followed by a great league performance in 1986/87. Ash United won the League for the second time under the management of Chris Penny. Ash United produced their best run in the FA Vase in 1993/94 by reaching the second round only failing to go further by losing to Littlehampton in a replay. The 1996/1997 season saw improvements in the facilities at Shawfield Road, most notably was the installation of floodlights and further improvements to the changing rooms, dugouts, and fencing. The 1997/98 seasons was Ash

United’s best for several years, with new manager Jamie Horton bringing his considerable experience to good effect. He brought together a squad of players that won the Challenge Cup and the Fair Play Trophy in his first season as player/manager. The team also created a new league and club record with 29 games unbeaten in league and cup, which included a run of 21 straight wins. The following season Jamie formed a side that took the League title by a massive 13 points. His team also won the Aldershot Senior Cup beating Fleet Town and reached the last 32 of the FA Vase before losing to the Holders & winners Tiverton Town in front of a record crowd at Shawfield Road. Jamie Horton had a second stint as manager during the 2001/2002. He then took Ash United to their highest points total for a season when they reached 100 but it still wasn’t good enough to take the title and they finished runners-up to AFC Wallingford. They however did regain the Aldershot Senior Cup beating 3 RSME Regiment and also reached the last 32 of the FA Vase before losing to Tow Law Town. There was more silverware for the club as the Reserves won the Division One Title. The 2004 to 2006 seasons saw ex-Aldershot Town player Stuart Udal take charge of the team. Great progress was made with Ash United finishing 3rd in the League. The Reserve team won the Reserve Premier Cup beating Sandhurst Town. Season 2007/2008 saw Danny Rolfe take over the manager’s position and although Danny’s tenure as manager was only to last one season he carried on the good work achieved by his predecessors with a credible mid table finish. Ash United reserves were narrowly beaten into 2nd place for the Suburban league title for 2007/2008. However, their outstanding season has been rewarded with promotion to the Suburban League Premiership division. The committee are hopeful that the new reserve team manager, Clive Gladwell, will continue the momentum of past seasons and take Ash United reserves to even greater achievements. Paul (Bonzo) Bonner, ably assisted by ex Ash United and AFC Wimbledon player Matt Everard, has now taken over the first team manager’s role. Paul has 18 years service as a player with Ash United so it is only fitting that his time should now come as first team manager. We all look forward to Paul’s unique management style and wish him and Matt all the very best for the coming seasons. Ash United continue to support youth football with the creation of an 11-a-side boys team in the 2008/2009 season. Under the stewardship of manager Trevor Macallan the team has seen consistent success. This in turn has helped attract other Youth teams to play under the Ash United banner, where in the 2011/2012 season we also have teams at Under 12s, Under 16s and Under 18s. On-pitch changes have been augmented with off-pitch changes; a new senior committee has been elected who have a combined vision and commitment to progress Ash United to new levels.

Farnham Town Football Club is a senior level

football club based in Farnham, Surrey, England.

Established in 1906 through the merging of

Farnham Bungs (the Farnham Brewery) and the

Farnham Star. The club was one of the founder members

of the London Spartan League in 1975. They reached the

Fourth Round of the FA Vase in the 1976-77 season.

At the end of the 1979/80 season Farnham Town left the

London Spartan League and applied to the Combined

Counties League, their application was accepted and they

finished 4th in their first season. The 1986/87 season

saw Farnham take second place to Ash United in the

league campaign. The glory days finally arrived in the

1990/91 season when the club won the league title. In the

1991/92 season, the Town got a clean sweep of the major

trophies by winning the Combined Counties Premier

League, the Dan Air Elite Cup and the Dan Air Challenge

Cup. Having won the league, the club applied and were

accepted to the Diadora league, however funds for

necessary ground improvements could not be generated

which resulted in the club not having a league to play in

for the 1992/93 season.

In 1993/94 Farnham Town were accepted back into the

Combined Counties League where they continue to ply

their trade.

From 1995-1998 Farnham finished in the top six of

the Premier Division for three consecutive seasons, in

1998-99 they finished in 13th position, then 10th in

1999-2000 before suffering relegation from the Premier

Division in 2000-2001 season. They bounced straight

back the following season but then endured four tough

seasons back in the Premier Division, with bottom four

finishes every season culminating in relegation back down

to Division One in 2005-2006. Again the club bounced

straight back and in 2006-2007 they won the Division One

title under the guidance of Barry Bridger, but were denied

promotion due to the Memorial Ground not meeting the

desired grading by the league. The club then spent another

four seasons in Combined Counties Division One.

Farnham gained promotion from Combined Counties

Division One in the 2010-2011 season after finishing

second behind Worcester Park. In Paul Tanner’s first

season at the helm he gained automatic promotion back

to the Premier Division at the first attempt, which after

only retaining four members of the side from the previous

years squad - who finished mid table, was quite an

achievement. Paul Tanner’s side also won the Combined

Counties Fair Play Award for 2010-2011 after going the

whole season without having a man sent off, a record to

be proud of. Also in their ranks, they had the leagues top

scorer for the season in the prolific Mark Corbett who

amassed a career best of 32 league goals in 34 league

matches to propel Farnham to promotion after signing

from Sandhurst in the Summer of 2010.

In a very successful year for the club on the whole, Dean

Nelson’s reserve side finished second behind Mole Valley

in the Combined Counties Reserve Division, improving

on fourth position the previous season. Farnham ladies

also finished second in their respective league to cap quite

a remarkable season in Geoff Chapple’s final season as

Chairman. The chairman of Farnham Town for 2011-2012

is Ray Bridger replacing Geoff Chapple, who previously

managed Woking and Kingstonian and because of his

continued involvement with Blue Square Bet South side

Woking coupled with Farnham Town’s promotion back to

the Combined Counties top-flight, Geoff is sadly ineligible

to continue both roles.

Current first team manager and now in his third

season at the club is Paul Tanner, alongside coaches Sean

Birchnall & Peter Grinham with Dean Nelson and Andy

Sharratt continuing to run the reserve side after winning

the reserve title last year in a fantastic year.

Also the club continues to run an Under 18 Youth Team

for the 2012-2013 season in the Southern Youth League

after finishing second last year in their first season.

The club has developed hugely over the summer with

the appointment of Youth Development Officer Kevin

Holden which has seen new under 9, 11, 14 and 15 teams

join the club which is a massive step forward for all

involved.
