many years after Unite And Conquer’s

(Hinchinbrook) victory in last year’s renewal.

The stable is yet to decide whether the the now-favourite for next

month’s Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) will run again in the lead

up to the race or head straight in.

Newham was satisfied with the performance of Every Rose despite her

defeat, and said the run will put her spot on for the Gold Coast on January

10.

"She paraded quite big and five weeks from the grand final, I think

I've got enough room to move to find the improvement that she needs,"

Newnham said

"Rachel (King, jockey)

thought she had the leader

covered when she turned for

home and just blew out the last

50 (metres)."

Farnan (2 c Not A Single

Doubt ex Tallow by Street Cry)

is undefeated from two starts

which has seen him amass

$122,750 in career prize-money.

Bred by Phoenix

Thoroughbreds, the colt was

purchased by Aquis Farm in

conjunction with Phoenix for

$550,000 at the Magic Millions

Gold Coast Yearling Sale when

offered as part of the Vinery Stud

draft.

Farnan is the sixth foal, third

to have raced and won, out of

Group 3-winning mare Tallow

(Street Cry) who was a runner-

up in the Magic Millions 3YO

Guineas (RL, 1400m) before retiring to stud.

He is a three-quarter brother to Sandbar (Snitzel) who won the

Lonhro Plate (Listed, 1100m) and the Rosebud Handicap (Listed, 1100m)

and was runner-up in the Roman Consul Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) and Pago

Pago Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m).

Tallow was purchased by David Lucas on behalf of Phoenix

Thoroughbreds for $250,000 at the 2017 Magic Millions National

Broodmare Sale but has missed at her last two seasons to Snitzel

(Redoute’s Choice) and Sebring (More Than Ready).

She was Covered by The Autumn Sun (Redoute’s Choice) in October.

Plan C works wonders for Diamond Thunder After blowing the start, Josh Parr had to come up with Plan C aboard

Diamond Thunder (Dawn Approach) which worked out brilliantly as the

three-year-old stormed home to take out the Magic Millions 3YO & 4YO

Stakes (1200m) at Wyong yesterday.

The gelding was slow out of the barriers and was forced to settle worse

than midfield during the run, but once Parr got him to the outside in the

home straight, Diamond Thunder rocketed home to win by a half-neck

over Hightail (Written Tycoon) with Leviathan (Zoustar) a further neck

away in third.

"He was just a bit hesitant in the first 50 metres of the race but there's

nothing like versatility, and that goes for horse and jockey," Parr said.

"Plan C was deployed and Plan C was a beauty."

After the race, Mark Newham admitted to having some concerns in

the early stages of the contest but said the run should bring the gelding on

nicely for his grand final at the Gold Coast.

“He didn’t begin as well as he usually does, I thought he’d be up

running second or third,” said Newnham.

“He just got run off his feet, but he has a great will to win. Once he

started to come I was confident enough he would get home over the top

of them.

“What it did show is that when he steps up to 1400 metres at the Gold

Coast he will be well suited.”

Diamond Thunder will have

one more run in the Vo Rogue

Plate (Gr 3, 1400m) at Eagle Farm

on December 28 before tackling

the Magic Million 3YO Guineas

(RL, 1400m) on January 11.

Diamond Thunder (3 g Dawn

Approach - Kwinana by Lonhro)

has now had seven starts for five

wins and has earned a total of

$325,065 in prize-money.

He was a $135,000 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale Book 2

purchase for PL Bloodstock from the Oaklands Stud draft and is the first

foal out of dam Kwinana (Lonhro) who herself is a three-quarter sister to

Group 3 winner Trim.

Trim, who is herself out of Group 3 winner Firm (Night Shift), is the

dam of How Now Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) winner Manicure (Exceed and

Excel). Trim is also a sister to Stubborn who herself is the dam of this

season’s Makybe Diva Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Gatting (Hard Spun).

Kwinana foaled a colt by Darley’s young sire Astern (Medaglia d’Oro)

in 2019 and was again served by the stallion in September.

AUSTRALIA

69 for Not A Single DoubtThe Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained

Farnan (2 c ex Tallow by Street Cry) consolidated

his place at the head of the Magic Million 2YO

Classic (RL, 1200m) after his victory in the Wyong

Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1100m) yesterday

and in the process handed Arrowfield Stud

stallion Not A Single Doubt (Redoute’s Choice)

his 69th stakes winner. The two-year-old colt was

purchased by Phoenix Thoroughbreds and Aquis

Farm for $550,000 at the Magic Millions Gold

Coast Yearling Sale. Not A Single Doubt has sired

a total of six stakes winners this season, headed

by Group 1-winning pair Samadoubt and Scales

Of Justice.

Gold Fields future hinges on Villiers runThe outcome of tomorrow’s Villiers Stakes (Gr

2, 1600m) at Randwick will decide whether

Gold Fields (Churchill Downs) heads to Dubai

or stays at home for an autumn campaign.

A win in the Villiers would guarantee Gold

Fields a start in the Doncaster Handicap (Gr

1, 1600m) at Randwick in April, a route trainer

Logan McGill would favour if he wins the Group

2. "I'm pretty happy with the way the race has

turned out on acceptances and I'm very happy

with him, so I think we'll get a really good

indication on Saturday of which way we'll be

going," McGill said. If Gold Fields travels to

Dubai, there are races short-listed in January

and February with options on both turf and the

dirt, something the trainer is keen to try. "I have

a feeling that he might perform well on that

which might take him to another level," he said.

Should the gelding stay in Australia he could be

aimed at the All-Star Mile (1600m).

Three for Waller in Christmas CupChris Waller has rated High Bridge (Monsun)

as the best chance among his three runners

in tomorrow’s Christmas Cup (2400m) at

Randwick. The eight-year-old gelding will

be joined in the race by Naval Warfare (Born

To Sea) and Alward (Aqlaam), with the latter

having beaten High Bridge on his last start

in the ATC Cup (Listed, 2000m) and off the

back of that performance Alward is ahead of

High Bridge in the betting but Waller is not

convinced punters have got this right. "It

was a very good run behind Alward and 2400

metres second-up is ideal for him," Waller

said. "He is probably my slight pick at this

early stage." High Bridge has come in for early

market support, opening at $9.50 and firming

to $6 by yesterday.

Blinkers back on for Passage Of TimeAfter a gelding operation produced winning

results for Passage Of Time (Northern

Meteor) in the winter, Joe Pride is hoping the

application of blinkers for tomorrow’s Razor

Sharp Handicap (Listed, 1200m) at Randwick

can bring about the same outcome. Pride says

he has come on since his last-start midfield

effort in the Starlight Stakes (Listed, 1100m)

when he drew the outside barrier and closed

late. "He gets his blinkers back on Saturday and

that makes a big difference to him," Pride said.

"He will get up on speed and I think it's a nice

race for him. He has trained on super and looks

great. He won the three Saturday races last

time and he's on par to be really good again."

Passage Of Time has drawn barrier three for

tomorrow’s contest with Glyn Schofield booked

to take the ride.

McDonald has faithin EncountabullA positive lead from James McDonald has

reinforced John Sargent's confidence ahead of

Encountabull's (Bull Point) Inglis Nursery (RL,

1000m) bid at Randwick. McDonald partnered

the colt when he flashed home for a debut fourth

in the Inglis Banner 2YO Stakes (RL, 1000m) at

Moonee Valley and was impressed enough to

make a long-range commitment to ride him

in tomorrow's race. "He galloped him before

Melbourne and he said he'd get on the horse

there, and then after there, he said he'd get on it

at Randwick," Sargent said. "It's good to get him

that far out. They're hard to get the real top boys

and he's right on his game. He has won a trial

since that race. I do have a good opinion of him so

hopefully he will front up and show that."

Outback Barbie out to reverse Eagle Farm formOutback Barbie (Spirit Of Boom) has failed to run

a place in three Eagle Farm starts but her trainer

Tony Gollan believes that is a false statistic

leading into The Gateway (1400m) tomorrow.

The four-year-old will line up off the back of her

narrow second in the George Moore Stakes (Gr

3, 1200m) two weeks ago and Gollan said: "That

was one of several very good runs in the George

Moore. She is out to 1400 metres and third-up so

we would expect her to be in the finish. Her first

go at Eagle Farm was very good in the Kingsford

Smith Cup when she got beaten about two

lengths after striking interference and travelling

wide. Then she was ordinary in the Dane Ripper

and she was at the end of her campaign in the

Tatt's Tiara but still only finished a bit over two

lengths away. I wouldn't be worried about Eagle

Farm and I won't be using that as an excuse if she

gets beaten."

Tambo’s Mate ready for 1400 metre testMeanwhile, a chance to test in-form Tambo's

Mate (Mossman) at 1400 metres has swayed

trainer Stuart Kendrick to run the gelding in

The Gateway at Eagle Farm. The four-year-old

has won seven of his 12 starts with his longest

winning distance in the Recognition Stakes

(Listed, 1350m) on his last run three weeks ago.

"I have always felt he would be a 1400 metre

horse. The Gateway is our chance to see if he

will be able to handle it," Kendrick said.

After tomorrow's race Tambo's Mate will return

to Eagle Farm on December 28 in an effort to

win a wild card to Magic Millions day. "He has

done a good job this campaign and a place

in the Magic Millions would be a bonus,"

Kendrick added. "He is unbeaten at two starts

at Eagle Farm so it is now a matter of how he

goes at 1400."

Chapter And Verse ready for Lough Neagh testDesleigh Forster is looking forward to seeing

Chapter And Verse (Rothesay) back at Eagle

Farm for the Lough Neagh Stakes (Listed,

1300m) where he will be trying to follow up his

win in the George Moore Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at

Doomben. "It's a different ball game being back

at Eagle Farm with the nice long run home,"

Forster told Racing.com. "He will probably be

back like he was last start. There's good speed

in this race so hopefully he can get a bit of luck

and be there late." After tomorrow, a trip to the

Gold Coast for Magic Millions race day and a tilt

at either the $1m Magic Millions QTIS Handicap

(1300m) or $1m Magic Millions Cup (RL, 1400m)

is on the agenda. "He's definitely come on and

he's still a month away from his main goal so

we're just keeping him ticking over," Forster

continued. "If he goes to the Magic Millions QTIS

race over 1300 metres I may run him fresh or if I

run him in the (Magic Millions) Cup over 1400

metres I can give him another run in two weeks

or trial him in between.”

Tyzone stays homeMeanwhile, connections have decided to keep

Tyzone (Written Tycoon) in Queensland for

the Lough Neagh Stakes rather than taking

him to Sydney for his return. Co-trainer Toby

Edmonds was tempted to take the six-year-

old to Randwick tomorrow for the Razor Sharp

Handicap (Listed, 1200m) but has instead

opted to run at Eagle Farm. Edmonds said: "In

the end it is easier and better all around to stay

home if we are looking at a Millions day start.”

Tyzone ran second in the Stradbroke Handicap

(Gr 1, 1400m) in the winter and is again being

aimed at that race next year.

Bigger track to help The Candy ManBarry Baldwin believes a return to a bigger

track and a step up in distance will help The

Candy Man (Casino Prince) back up seven

days after failing to get a clear run in the

straight when finishing third in the Brisbane

Handicap (Listed, 1600m). The trainer had

always intended to back The Candy Man up in

tomorrow’s Hamilton Hotel Handicap (1800m)

at Eagle Farm as part of an overall plan to get

him into the field for the Magic Millions Trophy

(2400m) at the Gold Coast on January 11.

"The Candy Man wasn't paid up for the Magic

Millions series and needs a wild card to get in,"

Baldwin said. "He will need to win the Shoot

Out Quality at Eagle Farm on December 28 to

get a Millions start, but it would have meant

it was three weeks between runs and going

from 1600 to 2200 metres if we don't run on

Saturday."

Griffiths ready for return to the trackAfter an absence of four months, Robbie

Griffiths has been given the all-clear to return

to the racetrack following brain surgery.

Griffiths underwent surgery on August 17

for an aneurism and received the final all-

clear earlier this week by his medical team

to attend tomorrow’s twilight meeting at

Flemington on Saturday. "I'm pretty keen to

get to headquarters on Saturday," Griffiths

said. "I saw the surgeon on Monday and the

neurologist on Tuesday and they're very happy

with everything. They said if you get a bit

tired that's to be expected, but if you feel like

you're ready, we can't see why you can't do it

(the races) now." Griffiths has two runners on

tomorrow’s card and it is Halvorsen (Magnus),

who won first-up over course and distance on

November 9, who he rates as his best chance.

"We have our eyes firmly set on the Standish

for him, but in saying that the seven kilo drop,

off a last start win at that track, you would have

to think he'd be somewhere around the mix,"

Griffiths added.

St Joeys in first city test at FlemingtonMatthew Williams has had St Joeys (Fighting

Sun) earmarked as a horse of promise for some

time and he will get a better gauge on the three-

year-old’s ability when he makes his city debut

in tomorrow's December Twilight Handicap

(1400m) at Flemington. St Joeys raced once in

his first preparation as a late two-year-old in

June, finishing fourth in a 975 metre Swan Hill

maiden before returning from a spell with a

four and a half length maiden win on his home

track over 1200 metres on December 1. "He's a

horse that we've really liked for quite a while,"

Williams said. "He'd shown us quite a bit going

towards Swan Hill and I thought his run over an

unsuitable trip was really good. We gave him a

good break and let him mature out a bit more.

He's come back and he's a lovely big, strong

horse who is well-developed, lovely and sound,

and he's got a great little turn of foot on him.

He's always shown a bit on the track and in his

trials."

Olmedo joins Maher and EustaceOlmedo (Declaration Of War), winner of the

Poule d'Essai des Poulains (Gr 1, 1600m) in

2018, has has been sold by co-owners Gerard

Augustin-Normand and Antonio Caro. Ciaron

Maher Racing confirmed the acquisition to

Racing.com on Wednesday - with Maher and

David Eustace set to train the entire. Following

the French Classic, Olmedo failed to fire in his

next few starts after which Jean Claude-Rouget

identified a back complaint and he missed

the rest of his three-year-old season. Olmedo

has won once from six starts this year, with his

lone success coming in the Prix Gontaut-Biron

(Gr 3, 2000m) at Deauville on August 15. The

entire is by former shuttler Declaration Of War

(War Front) who sired three Group 1 winners

in the spring; Vow And Declare, Warning and

Winning Ways.

Dunn cops suspensionDwayne Dunn is set to miss the next five

Melbourne meetings, three of those for a

careless riding suspension incurred at Sandown

Hillside on Wednesday. Dunn pleaded guilty

to careless riding aboard the third-placed

Eaton (High Chaparral) in the The Big Screen

Company Handicap (2400m) after he shifted

inwards tightening Ourkhani (Dalakhani)

passing the winning post the first time, forcing

rider Jake Toeroek to check off heels. The

stewards determined the interference was in

the mid-range but took into account Dunn’s

guilty plea and exceptionally clean record

before issuing a ten-meeting penalty. Dunn

will start his suspension after Saturday and

will be free to return for Caulfield’s Boxing Day

meeting.

Thompson looks backand looks to futureBen Thompson made a low-key return to

race riding in Melbourne yesterday and the

huge challenge that awaits the 22-year-old is

immediately evident. "It's good to be home and

straight back to work," Thompson said after

partnering his lone mount Tavonian (Tavistock)

into last place at Sandown Hillside. Thompson

rode 29 winners during the 2019 Singapore

season, but decided not to renew his Singapore

contract last month, allowing fellow Victorian

Patrick Moloney to fill the void. "I was very

lucky in Singapore and exceeding expectations

on that front," Thompson said. "It was not only

a huge thrill to have success abroad but also to

meet plenty of new people and learn new things

and make plenty of new contacts along the way.

I'm very lucky to have had the opportunity to

ride in Singapore and hopefully it's the first of

other stints to come. It's a dream of mine to

travel again."

Eustace hits out at Summer programmingCo-trainer David Eustace has questioned

Racing Victoria's summer programming

philosophy ahead of a hectic weekend schedule

of twilight and night racing. Three meetings

will be held in Victoria each day on Friday and

Saturday, with Friday's Geelong meeting the

only one of the six fixtures during the period

that will be held as a 'day' meeting. Saturday

racing from Melbourne will be at Flemington

and held as a twilight nine-race card, starting

at 3pm and concluding at 8pm. "Having three

such meetings on Saturday with no racing

during the day seems totally nonsensical,"

Eustace wrote in a statement he published on

Twitter. "Who decides this? This weekend with

only the President's Cup (golf tournament) to

compete with in Victoria this Saturday, surely

a perfect opportunity to showcase the sport

during summer in the day time."

Eustace calls for ‘transparency’ David Eustace also asked for transparency

from administrators about the financial benefit

of hosting twilight or night meetings as later

start times impact on the ability of a stable to

function with added costs and quality-of-life

impacts. "I understand there's a place and

requirement for twilight/night meetings,"

Eustace continued. "However, it would be

good to get some clarity re the actual financial

benefit compared to day meetings and, if the

effort required by participants to support

such meetings is warranted by that quantified

benefit." Eustace also said he believes offering

inferior prize-money at Wangaratta for their

Saturday twilight meeting in comparison to

the Cranbourne card later that evening was 'an

insult to all participants'.

RV defends twilight scheduleMeanwhile, the RV responded to David

Eustace’s claims yesterday, with general

manager Greg Carpenter saying: "Wangaratta

and Cranbourne are well-established event

meetings in these time slots which showcase

our sport to the local community and provide

the clubs with an opportunity to capitalise on

the Christmas party market. Both meetings have

been developed to suit their local communities

and will again be well supported this weekend

with Wangaratta expecting a crowd of over

3,000 people and Cranbourne around 4,000.

These are successful meetings that are being

embraced by the local community." Since its

inception in 2015, prize-money at Saturday's

Wangaratta twilight meeting has increased 50

per cent from $10,000 to $15,000 and in 2018

it attracted wagering turnover of more than

$2.5 million. The Wangaratta meeting is one

of 16 meetings through the year that carries

minimum prize-money of $15,000. These

meetings have replaced a non-TAB meeting

with prize-money set commensurate with its

profile and the anticipated amount of turnover.

NEW ZEALAND

Aalaalune to run in EulogyGroup 1 performer Aalaalune (Reliable Man)

will run in the Eulogy Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) at

Awapuni on Saturday instead of the Listed

Hynds 3YO Salver (Listed, 2100m) at Ellerslie on

Sunday with Team Rogerson hoping the Group

3 will open options at Ellerslie's Christmas

carnival. "We considered the Ellerslie race but

sat down with Val and Lou, and we decided

that if we went to 2100m now, we couldn't

really drop back in distance," Graeme Rogerson

said. "By going to the Eulogy, it means we can

look at the Ladies Mile and the Royal Stakes

at Ellerslie after Christmas. But she's got that

ability and hopefully we'll see that shine

through on Saturday. She'll be better as she

gets over further (distance) but she's still sharp

enough to race well his weekend. She'll be very

Spirit) will run in the Hynds 3YO Salver on

Sunday in preparation for his tilt in the New

Zealand Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) in February.

The colt, who has never run further than 1600

metres, will attempt to back up his last start

victory in the Wellington Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m)

when he runs in the Listed race. "He has taken

a little while to click to it all, but his last two

runs have been very good, so I am very excited

about his chances," Marsh said. "He galloped

up on Tuesday morning on the course proper

and I thought his work was really good. Getting

him up over ground is the key to him, he's really

going well. He has gone the right way since that

last win. We think he will definitely stay, but you

never know until you get them up over ground,"

Marsh said. "He is nominated for the Derby,

and that's the path he is on."

100th stakes winner this weekend when he

rides Gorbachev (Gorky Park) in the Waikato

in the Cal Isuzu Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m), both for

trainer Bryce Newman. "It would be a huge

achievement," Bradley said. "I look at what

Jimmy Cassidy has achieved and it pales to his

Auckland Guineas next for Riodini Following his victory in the Bonecrusher Stakes

(Gr 3, 1400m), Nigel Tiley is now planning to

aim Riodini (Proisir) Auckland Guineas (Gr 2,

1600m) at Ellerslie on New Year’s Day. Bred and

part-owned by Alan Galbraith QC, Riodini is set

to continue on a Classic path in New Zealand

after his connections have knocked back a

number of sizeable offers for the gelding. “The

owners are very keen to race him,” Tiley said.

“They have rejected all offers because they are

not interested in selling him. They are getting

more fun as a family with him. It’s just nice

to have a horse of his quality retained in New

Zealand.” Tiley took out the Auckland Guineas

two years ago with Demonetization (All Too

Hard), whose Classic season was cut short

through injury, but he will likely join Riodini at

Ellerslie on New Year’s Day to contest the Rich

Hill Mile (Gr 2, 1600m).

Thunder Snow heads up Darley Japanroster at ¥2.5 million

Thunder Snow (Helmet) will stand his first

season on the Darley roster in Japan at a fee of

¥2.5 million ($33,330). A Darley homebred, he

became the first ever horse to win back-to-back

Dubai World Cups (Gr 1, 2000m) earlier this

year and is an elite level winner from two to five

on both turf and dirt. Darley announced fees for

the ten stallions at its Japanese branch in 2020

and also new for breeders is another multiple

Group 1 winner in Hawkbill (Kitten’s Joy), who

will stand at a fee of ¥1m ($13,350). Shotaro

Kajiya, nominations manager for Darley

Japan, said: "We're delighted to offer Japanese

breeders a wonderful line up of stallions with

two very exciting new horses: Thunder Snow,

who won Group 1 races on both turf and

dirt, plus the precious Hawkbill - a potential

successor to Kitten's Joy.”

Almond Eye set to return in Arima KinenAfter missing her start in the Hong Kong

Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) due to an elevated

temperature, Japanese superstar Almond Eye

(Lord Kanaloa) is set to return to action in the

Arima Kinen (Gr 1, 2500m) at Nakayama on

December 22. "She trained fast on December

8 and moved good, with no problem with

her breathing after it. She will be able to be

in her best condition on the raceday if I can

continue to train her for the Arima Kinen."

Sakae Kunieda said. Almond Eye will be

shooting for her seventh win at elite level

when she contests the 2500 metre contest.

BY STEVE MORAN | @STEVEM_MORAN

If recent history is any guide, then

Western Australian galloper Gatting

faces a monumental task to repeat his

Eastern seaboard debut in the Group 1

Maybe Diva (Craiglee) Stakes win in tomorrow’s

Group 1 Underwood Stakes at Caulfield.

Not only does the son of Hard Spun have

to defy the usually huge odds against longshot

winners repeating, he’d become just the third

horse in 30 years to complete the double; 25

have tried and only Weekend Hussler (2008)

and Northerly (2002) have been successful.

Furthermore, none the past ten Craiglee

Stakes winners has managed to win another race

during the spring which is verily dumbfounding

and must cast some doubt over its Group 1 status

in a Melbourne carnival which, ridiculously, has

six Group 1 races from 1600 metres to 2040 metres

in about as many weeks.

In contrast, the Group 2 Feehan Stakes

— won this year by Homesman — has been a

much better portent of things to come through

the balance of the spring carnival.

Six of the past ten Feehan winners have

won again in the coming weeks. The exceptions

include Rekindled Interest and Whobegotyou,

who were later placed in Cox Plates, and Magic

Consol who didn’t race again that year.

Four of the past five Underwood Stakes

winners have come via the Feehan including,

of course, Homesman who won last year after

finishing second in the Moonee Valley race and

he looks a superior horse in 2019.

Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman won

the 2017 Underwood with four-year-old mare

Bonneval [who’d won the Feehan] and they

saddle another four-year-old, this time male,

in The Chosen One — who looks the principal

danger to Homesman.

The follow-up form of major race winners

is something of a fascination and generally less

impressive than you might think. Examining

the two major races at Caulfield last Saturday is

interesting.

Begood Toya Mother was a fast and

spectacular winner of the Rupert Clarke Stakes

albeit with a “fired up” Iconoclasm providing

him with some unexpected cover.

Begood Toya Mother is now expected to be

spelled. Moment Of Change, a low weighted

Rupert Clarke winner like Begood Toya Mother,

is the only victor in recent memory [certainly in

the past ten years] to have had an immediate

break and he returned to run second to Black

Caviar in the Group 1 Lightning Stakes and then

went on to win a brace of Group 1 races.

Trust In A Gust and Stratum Star are the

only Rupert Clarke winners, in the past ten

years, to score again that spring - taking the

Group 1 Toorak Handicap and Group 3 Coongy

Handicap respectively.

Similarly, last weekend’s Group 3

Naturalism Stakes has produced just two

subsequent springtime winners in the past

decade; Jameka who went on to win the Group

1 Caulfield Cup and December Draw who won

the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes before failing in

the Caulfield Cup.

Lindsey Smith has pulled off

a remarkable training feat by

managing to rejuvenate the

once retired Black Heart Bart

(Blackfriars) to win his sixth Group 1 race and

second Underwood Stakes (1800m) - three

years on from his first victory in the Caulfield

feature.

Western Australian Smith took over the

Warrnambool stables once owned by Black

Heart Bart’s disqualified trainer Darren Weir

and was asked by the horse’s owners to attempt

to resurrect the nine-year-old gelding’s career.

Smith conceded that he was not overly

confident that Black Heart Bart would make

it back to the races until an encouraging

Cranbourne barrier trial effort last month.

"Before he trialled I started to doubt, but

then he trialled well," Smith said.

"His first race was good and then his second

run was plain, but we thought getting him up to

the 1800 metres would be good as he wouldn't

be chasing all the time.

"It's a good result." Continued on page 2>>

MORNING BRIEFING

Dunn gets job doneon RenewalWayne Hawkes believes the key to Renewal’s

Listed win was Dwayne Dunn not panicking

despite being last and a long way off the leader

Zoustyle. "He had a terrible run in transit but

the biggest thing was Dwayne didn't panic,"

Hawkes said. "He just saved it to the last little

bit and he hit the line well." Zoustyle’s trainer

Tony Gollan was ruing the fact that his smart

sprinter missed the stakes win by such a narrow

margin. "It's a big learning curve for him. It's his

first trip away and this was his first time racing

the Melbourne way of going,” Gollan said. "I

think it's important if I can just keep him in his

We won't aim too high I don't think at this

next year we're going to have a bona fide Group

Black Heart Bart ($101) held off last

year's winner, the $2.50 favourite Homesman (War Front), to win by a

short neck.

Fellow Warrnambool-trained veteran Gailo Chop (Deporvito) ($26)

was one and a half lengths away in third.

The Blackfriars (Danehill) gelding ran eighth first-up in the Memsie

Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) behind his new stablemate Scales Of Justice (Not A

Single Doubt), before running 11th in last week’s Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes

(Gr 1, 1400m) behind Begood Toya Mother (Myboycharlie).

"Even though those two runs might have looked a bit plain, he was

warming up and I've been happy with him," jockey Brad Rawiller said.

"Today, the whole way through the run I was thinking 'geez, we're

going to be in this'."

It was Black Heart Bart’s first win since the 2017 Futurity Stakes (Gr

1, 1400m). He was retired by Weir and his owners almost 12 months ago

after finishing well back in last year’s Toorak Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m).

An emotional Rawiller, the long-time rider of Black Heart Bart, was

delighted to see the gelding return to Group 1 winning form.

It also capped Rawiller’s own comeback from a broken neck which

almost ended his career, having been kept on the sidelines for nearly six

months after being seriously injured last October.

"I've won a Golden Slipper and a Caulfield Cup and I never looked like

getting teary, and I'm nearly in tears," he said.

"It's just amazing. I can't put it into words. Since coming back from my

broken neck it's been a long road.

"At the end of the day I haven't had much to look forward to as far as

rides for the spring and Black Heart Bart was always just my sole focus.

"I've been really happy with how he has been coming along.

"Last week after the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes when I was asked about

him, I said 'he lit the fire today'. But you've still got to see it.

"I'm still overwhelmed myself, to be honest, even though I thought he

could win today."

Nature Strip (Nicconi) staked his

claim for a potential shot at The

Everest (1200m) when silencing

his doubters with an impressive

victory in the AJ Moir Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) at

The Chris Waller-trained gelding

harboured plenty of criticism after his last

However, he showed he is a bona fide Group

Everest-bound filly Sunlight (Zoustar)

closed strongly late to finish the same distance away in third with Ian

McEwen Stakes winner Faatinah (Nicconi) another short-head further

back in fourth.

Waller admitted after the race that the horse gets a lot of negative

attention, but this win might put a stop to the bad press.

"He's a popular horse," Waller joked. "We seem to get more criticism

with him than we ever got with

another certain horse [Winx]

who was probably our last Group

1 winner here.

"That's racing, everyone has

got their opinions. He's a good

horse and today he stepped away

well. James didn't panic he just

got there gradually and it was a

good race.

"You think punters get

frustrated, well owning a horse

and training a horse when you're

running in these types of races,

it's a bitter pill to take when you

don't quite get it right.

"So I think it's a good reward to everybody and I hope the punters had

something on as well and got a bit back from last start when apparently I

did everything wrong."

Waller hopes Nature Strip secures a spot in the $14 million Everest at

Randwick on October 19 and the gelding will now head to the Schillaci

Stakes (Gr 2, 1100m) at Caulfield on October 12 - the winner of that race

will represent the Melbourne Racing Club in the $14 million sprint a week

later.

"I don't think 1200 metres is a problem," Waller said. "I'd say we'll just

see what unfolds in the next few days. If he doesn't get an invite for The

Everest I guess the Schillaci Stakes is the logical choice."

Meanwhile, trainer Shaun Dwyer said Miss Leonidas ran a great race

while Sunlight's co-trainer Tony McEvoy could not hide his delight over

the mare's performance.

McEvoy said he would run Sunlight the Gilgai Stakes at Flemington,

two weeks before The Everest at Randwick.

"I'm pumped," McEvoy said. "I feel like I've won the race.

"The risk was the 1000 meters tonight and that's all that cost her the

race."

Passed in for $90,000 (reserve $120,000) at the 2016 Inglis Melbourne

Premier Yearling Sale, Nature Strip (5 g Nicconi - Strikeline by Desert Sun)

took his record to 11 wins and two placings from 18 starts for prize-money

of $1,879,285.

Aim was eased from his wide barrier

9 and remained at the tail of the

ten-runner field until nearing the

home turn, where he improved

along the inner.

He finally got a split

at the 200 metres

and then ran on

strongly to score

a very good win

by a quarter of a

length in a time

of 1:11.75.

The colt is out of winning Smart Strike

was purchased by Julian Blaxland’s Blue Sky

Bloodstock for US$500,000 at the Keeneland

November Breeding Stock Sale.

Vintage Strike’s dam Bollinger (Dehere)

raced in Australia taking out five victories

including the Coolmore Classic (Gr 1, 1500m)

and a further two stakes victories.

Bollinger is the dam of seven foals with

all of them being winners including Grade 2

winner Friesan Fire (A.P. Indy) and Sandown

Guineas (Gr 2, 1600m) winner Villermont (All

Bollinger herself is out of Golden Slipper

Farnan (Not A Single Doubt) staked

his claims for next month’s Magic

Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) at

the Gold Coast with an impressive

victory in the Magic Millions Wyong Classic

(RL, 1100m) yesterday, highlighted by fast

sectional times.

The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-

trained colt showed very good early pace and

almost crossed to the front before settling

outside the leader, Time For Peace (Time For

War), travelling at a quick tempo.

Farnan got to the front on turning for home,

momentarily looked in danger as the favourite

Every Rose (Choisir) put in her bid but the colt

then safely held off the Mark Newnham-trained

filly to score by a length.

Time for the race was a smart 1:03.47 (11.54

200m rate), which is equivalent to 1200 metres

in 1:09.24, but it was the sectional times that

really took the eye.

The 200 metre breakdown (from the 1000m)

was: 10.56, 10.81 (400m in 21.37), 11.23 (600m

in 32.60), 11.35 (800m in 43.95) and 11.96 for a

fast last 1000 metre time of 55.91.

It was Farnan’s second race start, the colt

remaining unbeaten after taking out a Two-

Year-Old Handicap (1000m) at Canberra on

November 17 at his only other start.

The runner-up Every Rose, winner of the

Gimcrack Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m) at Randwick on

October 5 when racing on debut, appeared to

have every chance after a well-judged Rachael

King ride but improvement can be expected

with the filly resuming yesterday.

Farnan ($5.00) and Every Rose ($6.00) now

head the TAB betting for the Magic Millions

2YO Classic which will be run at the Gold Coast

on January 11.

Other juveniles to impress recently

included the fillies Sancy (I Am Invincible)

and Centimental (Snitzel) who figured in an

exciting finish to last Saturday’s Two-Year-Old

Plate (1100m) at Rosehill on Saturday.

Victory went to the Peter and Paul

Snowden-trained Sancy who scored by a neck

from Centimental with the favourite Hinchbeast

(Hinchinbrook) a nose away in third place after

running a bold race in the lead.

Time for the 1100 metres was good, 1:04.68

(11.76 200m rate), which is equivalent to 1200

metres in 1:10.56.

After settling in fourth place on the

rails, Sancy took the lead on passing the 200

metres and then fought back gamely to score,

seemingly with something in hand, from the

Chris Waller-trained Centimental, who finished

really well over the closing stages.

And the closing sectional times were quite

impressive.

Sancy clocked 56.31 (last 1000m), 45.45

(last 800m), 34.39 (last 600m), 23.19 (last 400m)

with her final 200 metres in 11.99.

Centimental clocked 56.25 (last 1000m),

45.24 (last 800m), 34.19 (last 600m), 23.03 (last

400m) with her final 200 metres in 11.81.

At Friday night’s Moonee Valley meeting,

the Furlough Plate (1000m) also featured some

promising juvenile fillies that were racing on

debut.

The winner was again supplied by the Peter

and Paul Snowden stable with Diamondesque

(Snitzel) staging a good effort to score by a

half neck from the Trent Busuttin and Natalie

Young-trained filly Chicamo (Exceed And

Excel) in the smart time of 58.95.

The Lindsay Park-trained filly Avenue Of

Pleasure (I Am Invincible) ran on well for third,

a length and a half further back.

Chicamo showed good pace to lead with

Diamondesque at her girth. The latter filly put

pressure on the leader nearing the home turn

and showed quality in scoring in good style

over the latter stages.

Avenue Of Pleasure raced back in seventh

spot, between runners, before making good late

ground to take the minor placing.

From a sectional times perspective the

feature was the quick mid-race breakdown

(from the 800m): 10.67, 11.26 (400m in 21.93),

11.83 (600m in 33.76) and 12.09 for a final 800

metres in 45.85.

Individual final 800 metre times were:

Diamondesque 45.83, Chicamo 45.86 and

Avenue Of Pleasure 45.57.

The Kingston Town Classic (Gr 1, 1800m)

was the main feature of last weekend’s racing

with victory going to the Neville Parnham-

trained filly Kay Cee (Playing God) who showed

her quality in overcoming a pace that saw the

race develop into a sprint home.

The time for the 1800 metres of 1:51.29

was certainly not quick and was actually 4.39

seconds outside Niconero’s (Danzero) track

record of 1:46.90, set in winning the Kingston

Town Classic in 2008.

The pace was set on Saturday by the noted

front-runner Gailo Chop (Deportivo) and

jockey John Allen showed his experience by

setting a well-judged pace that favoured his

mount and certainly not his rivals.

The first 600 metres was covered in only 38.26

with the next 600 metres (12.44, 13.44, 12.24) in

38.12 – resulting in the first 1200 metres of the race

clocking a moderate 1:16.38 (12.73 200m rate).

Allen then lifted the pace significantly

with 600 metres remaining, that final section

clocking 34.91 (11.64 200m rate), making the

task of those chasing difficult in overhauling

his mount, who looked to have stolen a winning

break on straightening.

But the game three-year-old filly, Kay Cee,

with the benefit of only 50 kilograms on her

back, pegged back Gailo Chop to score by a

half-length at the post.

And while full credit is due Kay Cee,

this being her fourth win from eight starts,

acknowledgement is due the nine-year-old

gelding Gailo Chop who conceded the winner

nine kilograms and six years of age when having

his first run since the Mackinnon Stakes (Gr 1,

2000m) at Flemington in early November.

In a thrilling four-way finish, the

Danny O’Brien-trained Vow And Declare ($11), who had raced near the

speed throughout, fought back under Craig Williams on the line to score

by a head.

Master Of Reality (Frankel) was second past the post but relegated to

fourth on protest, elevating Prince Of Arran (Shirocco) ($17) to runner-up

with Il Paradiso (Galileo) ($15) another nose back.

Vow And Declare ran 3:24.76 seconds in the cup on ground rated a

Soft 5, more than eight seconds outside Kingston Rule's (Secretariat)

3:16.3 track record set in 1990.

O’Brien said Williams had

pulled off a tactical masterstroke

on Vow And Declare, who was

runner-up to Japan’s Mer De

Glace (Rulership) in the Caulfield

Cup (Gr 1, 2400m).

"He'd been in front past

the winning post the first time

and, particularly for a horse

that normally settles midfield

or back, it was a different

position for him to be in,"

O’Brien said.

"Ultimately, it's been the winning move, I don't think he would've won

if he'd gone back.

"I thought it was an incredibly brave thing for him to do, to roll to the

post the first time.

"My feelings inside the last 100 metres were that he was going to run a

nice third or fourth, which would be a bit disappointing.

"The horse is a courageous horse he's got great stamina and I'm sure

he was headed but he just found some more to get his head out on the

line.

When Vow and Declare was passed in at auction, Paul Lansky

approached members of the group which race Lycurgus, among them

Geoff Corrigan, and a number of family members to form a new syndicate

to race the son of Declaration of War (War Front) with Danny O’Brien.

They must now be thrilled they became involved with the winner of

Australia’s most coveted race and to be sharing in the $5,722,690 he has

earned to date.

After Lycurgus, Geblitz produced the placed filly Blitz’n’Magic (Magic

Albert) in 2014 before Vow and Declare was born the following year but the

mare’s 2016 colt by Stratum (Redoute’s Choice) died. A sister to Lycurgus

by Star Witness (Starcraft) arrived in 2018 and she is to be offered as Lot

329 at January’s Magic Millions Yearling Sale at the Gold Coast in the

Widden Stud consignment.

This spring Geblitz has foaled a filly by Shalaa (Invincible Spirit) and

been bred back to American Pharoah (Pioneer of the Nile).

We wrote about Vow and Declare’s sire Declaration of War, a multiple

Group 1 winner, in yesterday’s ANZ Bloodstock News when profiling his

2019 Victoria Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) winner Warning. The former Coolmore

shuttler, now standing in Japan, has some pretty impressive statistics with

five Group/Grade 1 winners among a total of 24 stakes winners from his

early crops in Ireland, the United States and Australia which have given

him a high 7.4 per cent stakes winners-to-runners.

Twice a winner as a two-year-old in France, Declaration of War was

essentially bred for speed but was at his racing best at around 1600m to

2000m though was never tried over longer distances.

Vow and Declare comes from a family of high quality tracing back to

the famous “flying filly” Mumtaz Mahal (The Tetrarch) but breeding buffs

will be scratching their heads as to from where the gelding has derived his

stamina. My guess is that the source may be via Old Vic (Sadler’s Wells),

sire of his third dam Young Vic, a mare with little racing ability.

As you will see from the catalogue pedigree printed here, Young

Vic is an excellent producer but while her superbly-bred sire was a

disappointment at stud, he was outstanding as a racehorse, winning in

1989 both the Prix du Jockey Club (Gr 1, 2400m) and the Irish Derby (Gr

1, 1m 4f), two stiff tests.

One of Young Vic’s daughters, Youthful Presence (Dehere) produced

ATC Epsom Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Hauraki (Reset) and two

other stakes winners, most notably Kidnapped (Viscount), winner of the

South Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2500m).

Loralane (Habitat), fourth dam of Vow and Declare, established a

very strong branch of this wonderful Mumtaz Mahal family in Europe,

its most recent superstar being Golden Horn (Cape Cross), whose seven

wins included the Derby (Gr 1, 1m 4f), the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (Gr

1, 2400m), the Coral-Eclipse Stakes (Gr 1, 1m 2f) and the Irish Champion

Stakes (Gr 1, 1m 2f). Loralane is Golden Horn’s third dam.

The pedigree of Vow and Declare up close is dominated by a 3 x 4 cross

of Danehill’s sire Danzig (Northern Dancer) while he carries two sons

of another speed influence, Mr. Prospector (Raise a Native), in his fifth

generation plus another son in his sixth generation. There are also four

more infusions of Northern Dancer (Nearctic) in the sixth and seventh

generations of Vow and Declare’s genetic background.

CHARLIE FELLOWES | @FELLOWESRACING

What a day yesterday was –

it was unbelievable. Most

importantly Prince Of Arran

has come through the run

perfectly. He trotted up beautifully and polished

off all his feed, which is a great sign that the

horse isn’t stressed. He had a lovely long pick of

grass at Werribee this morning. Tash sent me a

message saying that she got so distracted giving

him grass she ended up staying out there for an

hour and a half. So he’s, as always, had the best

treatment since the run.

I never thought I was going to win

It was totally different to last year – I really

felt at one stage 12 months ago we were going

to win the race. But this year I never ever felt,

despite how close we were, that it was ours.

I always knew we were just held by Master

Of Reality and Vow And Declare. It probably

wasn’t until right on the line I realised how

close we actually were. I am incredibly proud of

him for running another fantastic race.

It was a very strong renewal with a lot of

strength and depth. They went a very steady

gallop and turned it into a bit of sprint which

meant those on the pace were massively at an

advantage. But the way it was run really suited

Prince Of Arran – he is such a relaxed, easy to

ride sort of horse which means that he really

can sit wherever you want, whereas if you

have a horse that gets a bit lit up they have to

get some cover, so although we were fortunate

with the way the race was run, we earned that

fortune and luck with his versatility and the way

he runs his races.

Michael Walker’s ride was just perfect. I

said after the Geelong Cup that was his best ride

he’s ever given him, but although we didn’t win,

I think Tuesday’s was just as good. He had him

in such a good position the whole way through

and he couldn't have ridden it any better.

The bottom line is that everything went

our way, the race played into our hands and

we just weren’t good enough on the day.

But he ran his heart out and there really is

nothing more you can ask from a horse. We

only got beaten a head, so we can’t come away

complaining, questioning what could have

been, as everything went our way. I’m not even

just talking about Tuesday either, really since

Goodwood we could not have had a more

perfect preparation into the race. I have said

that all along nothing went wrong. I was just

waiting for something, even small, to go amiss

but it hasn’t. We have been so, so lucky and I

don’t underestimate how fortunate we have

been with him.

The result was exactly what the race needed

Although obviously I would have loved

to have taken the Cup back to Newmarket, I

think the result was very, very important for

Australia. There were a few people in the race

that I thought I wouldn’t have minded losing

to — like Joseph O’Brien, he’s won the race

before, but he really is the most lovely guy and

I wouldn’t have minded being beaten by him.

But you also have to put Vow And Declare in

that bracket because it was a lovely story. It’s

the perfect Australian story: Australian-trained,

Australian-bred – just the right sort of horse you

would want to win the ultimate Australian race.

You got the feeling this year that Europeans

coming over and constantly winning it wasn’t

really doing it any favours. But Tuesday showed

that Australian horses can still be competitive

and can still win this amazing race. It was won

by a big syndicate of owners and it was just a

really, really good story for the race and of all

the horses to beat us I really didn’t begrudge

him for it.

But the love for Prince Of Arran has been

lovely and it’s very touching - they seem to

have taken him under their wing and clearly

have a lot of affection for him. But that really

is the kind of horse he is, he’s got a wonderful

personality. They also love the story of Tash and

her affection for the horse and he’s become a

real public favourite down here. His record in

Australia speaks for itself. In six starts he’s never

been out of the first three, placed in two Group

1s, placed in two Group 2s and won two Group

3s, it’s pretty unbelievable.

Japan or Hong Kong in the pipeline

So the immediate plan for Prince Of Arran

is either the Japan Cup or the Hong Kong Vase.

We were invited to Japan immediately after the

race and then overnight were invited to Hong

Kong as well which is great. I feel like Japan

is unbelievably tough - the ground is always

rattling quick and the Japanese are always very,

very difficult to beat on their own turf.

I am really going to consider both and get

an idea of both fields if I can and see what's

what. I have a feeling the Vase might be quite

strong this year. My first choice will be to go

to Hong Kong just because I feel it suits him

better. I thought he was flying in Hong Kong

last year, but the draw is so crucial there– if

you get drawn wide you are already at a huge

disadvantage before the race has even begun.

That is what I love about the Melbourne Cup

the draw is not the deciding factor as we saw on

Tuesday. Vow And Declare was drawn 21 and

sat in the box seat, how Craig Williams got him

in that position I do not know, which is sort of

what Michael Walker did last year from stall 20.

So plans have not yet been set in stone for

Arran for the rest of the year, but all being well

and he stays fit and healthy, all roads will lead

back to Melbourne again and we are hoping it

will be third time lucky and I can’t wait.

An emphatic three and a quarter

length win was the result, with Loving Gaby (I Am Invincible) and In Her

Time (Time Thief) filling the minor placings. Hot favourite Santa Ana

Lane (Lope De Vega) was uncharacteristically flat, finishing six lengths

from Nature Strip in sixth.

“I’m thrilled for the horse and thrilled for the connections, he has gone to a

new level this preparation, he has had only one real disappointment and that was

at his first start, apart from that he’s been faultless, he’s a star,” McDonald said.

“He was airborne, floating across the ground, I slipped him a bit more

rein at the 300m and I looked at the big screen and thought ‘oh no’, it felt

like I was six in front and he was still going through his gears and he ran it

out so strongly.”

Trainer Chris Waller revealed plans of tackling Royal Ascot next year.

“All preparation he has shown how well he is going, he’s a very happy

horse and that takes them a long way,” he said.

“We’ve been fortunate enough to takeover a very fast horse and we’ve

added a bit of our own fine tuning.

“I’m not to sure where he will have his next starts but I know the team

are keen to take him to Royal Ascot in June but there will certainly be a few

races before then.”

Sam Freedman said favourite Santa Ana Lane would enjoy an

extended spell after a hectic 2019.

"He's had a long year and I

think he was tired today, he raced

flat," Freedman told Racing.com.

"A lot of horses, when they

come back from Hong Kong, it

takes them a while to get over it.

"To be honest, I know he was

unlucky in The Everest but I don't

think he was at his best there

either.

"He's going to have a good

break and we'll see what we do

next year."

Santa Ana Lane’s jockey

Mark Zahra agreed the sprinter

was ‘flat’,

"He just went a bit tired

today," Zahra said.

"When I got the gaps on the

outside fence I thought he'd

zoom - nothing would've beat

the winner today - but he just

went like he's a tired horse."

Passed in for $90,000 (reserve

$120,000) at the 2016 Inglis

Melbourne Premier Yearling

Sale, Nature Strip (5 g Nicconi - Strikeline by Desert Sun) took his record

to 11 wins and two placings from 18 starts for prize-money of $1,879,285.

Nature Strip is one of three winners for the Group 3-winning mare

Strikeline (Desert Sun), making him a half-brother to Fernhill Handicap

(Listed, 1600m) winner The Barrister (Star Witness), now racing as High

Volatility in Hong Kong.

Strikeline is herself a half-sister to fellow Group 3 winner Bashful

Girl (Perugino), with the pair being out of Listed winner Strike High (Pre

Emptive Strike).

The mare has an unraced three-year-old sister to Nature Strip and

a two-year-old colt by Rosemont Stud’s Shamus Award (Snitzel), while

she has most recently been covered by New Zealand’s leading stallion

Savabeel (Zabeel).

Nature Strip was bred by Sean Buckley’s Golden Grove Stud and the

operation’s manager Anthony Swords does not regret parting with the

brilliant sprinter as a yearling.

“We sell good horses. It’s as simple as that,” Swords said.

“People often say ‘why would they sell their good ones?’ but that’s

what we do. We breed and raise very good horses and the owners of

Nature Strip are seeing that first hand. Good luck to them.’’

Nicconi stands at Widden Stud for a fee of $38,500 (inc GST).

Analysis: Farnan came into contention for next month’s Magic

Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) at the Gold Coast with a very good

win here. He showed good early pace before settling outside the

leader (Time For Peace) at a quick tempo. He took the lead on

straightening and then fought back strongly to win well. The favourite

Every Rose settled in third place on the rails, eased into clear running

on turning for home and briefly looked a threat but was safely held

by the winner before she fought on nicely for second. Remorseless

had a nice trip in fourth place, one out and one back. He moved up

at the home turn and then battled on quite well for third. Time For

Peace set a good pace in front and after leading to the home turn,

she battled on for (7 lengths) fourth in a sound effort. Strike raced

in fifth place on the rails but was under pressure a fair way out and

disappointed, just battling on for a distant (9.5 lengths) fifth in the six-

horse field.
