The Light Shines in the Darkness
Irsquom not always a fan of the song ldquoItrsquos the
Most Wonderful Time of the Yearrdquo I hope
December and Christmas time can be a
wonderful time for you It is also for many
the most difficult time of the year It may be
a time of your family experiencing the ldquofirst
Christmasrdquo since a loved one has died or
missing other loved ones It can be a time of
strong feelings that you wished things were
different or missing how things used to be
Christmas time can be the most difficult time of the year a
time where you may feel at your lowest while feeling bombard-
ed with messages and expectations that life should feel per-
fect
In our worship services in recent weeks we have heard the story
of Godrsquos people who were dislocated from the life they knew
in Judah and were taken against their will to a place called
Babylon This may be a time where you feel dislocated or in a
place you never thought you would be
God speaks a word of hope to his people whose lives have
been turned upside down He realizes that there is no quick fix
There isnrsquot a return to what was ldquonormalrdquo He encourages his
people to invest in living in this new place they are at because
God is with his people even in this new place God is with you
as you come to know a ldquonew normalrdquo May you know and ex-
perience the presence of God in whatever place you find
yourself today
God is not content being distant from you At Christmas time
we give thanks for Jesus the Word that became flesh and lives
among us We give thanks that in the midst of the darkness in
Jesus we have the light that shines in the darkness And the
darkness will not overcome it
May you be filled with the peace and the hope of Christ
Pastor Kevin
FLCrsquos Core Values Farmington Lutheran Church lives by the
following Core Values
Providing a Meaningful Worship Experience
Fostering Connections
Nurturing amp Developing Faith Journeys
Serving amp Caring for Others

Ask Nothellip Ask WHAT In 1961 during his inaugural address John F Kennedy spoke these
memorable words ldquoAsk not what your country can do for you ndash ask
what you can do for your countryrdquo These are challenging words for all
Americans to look outwards rather than inwards and find positive ways
to contribute to society As Christians this message also seems to apply
to living out Christrsquos calling to us in our everyday lives We are called to
look outwards and be disciples of Christ
During this time of the year at FLC there is emphasis on the stewardship
drive and an intentional time to take an inventory of our many God-
given blessings and how you can share them But stewardship is really a
365 day a year challenge to find ways to lsquopay it forwardrsquo Letrsquos
substitute God for country in JFKrsquos words Ask not what your Lord can do
for you ndash ask what you can do for your Lord and make this our guide for
how we live our lives as Christians
Leon Orr spoke to the council regarding World Hunger Relief week He would like to have more options availa-
ble in the future for people to donate to The council agreed to look into this for future World Hunger Week and
at other times as well

A Praying Life Connecting with God in a Distracting World
Do you ever wonder if prayer makes a difference or if God is even listening when you pray Do
you struggle with prayer because yoursquore too busy or just not ldquogoodrdquo at it If so then you are not
alone and this book study is for you You are invited to join us for a discussion of ldquoA Praying
Life Connecting with God in a Distracting Worldrdquo by Paul Miller
In this ldquono experience necessaryrdquo book study we will talk about why the American culture is one of
the hardest places in the world to learn to pray We are busy distracted used to being entertained
and often just plain exhausted The good news is you can learn to pray Itrsquos not about being more
ldquodisciplinedrdquo itrsquos about coming to God just as you are As Paul Miller writes ldquoCome to God
overwhelmed with life Come with a wandering mind Come messyrdquo A praying life is about
coming to God messy and asking for what you need trusting in the goodness of a God who
loves you
Please join us the first Wednesday of each month (Dec-May) at 6 pm (NOTE time change)
beginning on Dec 4 Cost of the book is $12 and free childcare is available upon request

The 2014 budget is being finalized for approval by the Congregational Council at its December
meeting It is a positive and hopeful budget Positive in that we believe the funds will be available
to hire an Associate Pastor later in the year give modest raises to the FLC staff and fulfill some of
the longstanding goals of the Ministry Teams Next yearrsquos budget is hopeful in that it entails our belief that the trend
of increased giving by the committed members and worshipers at FLC will continue throughout 2014 From strong
faith many good works can be accomplished
Giving to the Strengthening Faith Capital Appeal was strong enough in September for an extra payment of $6657
to be made on the principal of the second mortgage which is now down to $41869 The Strengthening Faith appeal
has been and remains an important part of our debt management program Please consider making regular contri-
butions to this ongoing appeal in 2014 to help reach our annual goal of reducing our debt principal by $100000
Thanks to all of you who help in so many ways to keep FLC ministries strong
