I hope everyone had a wonderful Summer. As I’m sure is true in your business, Fall is “get back to work” season. I’m very excited for what is coming up on our Chamber Cal-endar over the next quarter. We have so many events coming up this Fall; such as our Trick or Treating event, Parades, Lunch Meetings starting again, and we have our Annual Outstanding Small Business Person of the Year

award.

This year, I am very happy to announce that Joseph Minieri of Mass Mutual has been named Nassau Council of Chambers of Commerce 2018 Outstanding Small Businessperson of the Year. Joe certainly meets the criteria of this award. Joe is a very active member of the Chamber of Commerce; he is on the board as a Vice President and heads the membership committee. He can be seen at most Chamber events and marching in all the Parades. More importantly he is a big help within the chamber, he makes my job much easier. I always know the Chamber and I

can count on Joe.

This summer, Farmingdale gained plenty of attention with maybe the most successful Music On Main Series yet. Also, the Movie Nights on the Village Green were well attended (it’s always fun to see the Mayor working the popcorn machine). It was great to see such a large and lively crowd on Main Street and we can hopefully use that to further grow Farmingdale businesses throughout the town and future events. Farmingdale has been a destination for some time now, and it’s great that the secret is out. I’d like to thank the Village for doing what they can to increase traffic into the village, and to our

other partners for doing the same in the rest of the Town.

At our November Lunch Meeting we will be holding Elections for the Board of Directors and Officers. If you would like to run for a position please email or call me and I will get that information to our Nominating Committee. We also need our members to attend this meeting in order to vote in the Chamber

Election.

Also in November will be our Annual Holiday Parade. All members are invit-ed to march in the Parade behind the Chamber of Commerce banner. Bring your family, and if you have one, bring your banner or Mascot. We LOVE to

have them.

This December is our Annual Holiday Party and Installation of Officers at the Heritage Club at Bethpage State Park. This is always a fun time, and all members get a free ticket. We will also be acknowledging two members who have been members for 25 years. Thank you Merritt Bakery and Farming-dale Care! I’m also happy to announce Owner of Nutty Irishman Joe Fortuna, will be honored at our holiday party for all he does to support both the Chamber and Farmingdale Village Merchants with this year’s Presidents Club

Award.

We also need to mention Angela Cowen is retiring from the Board of direc-tors after many dedicated years of service. Angela, thank you for all of your

hard work!

We are booking speakers for our 2019 lunch meetings. This year we are looking for speakers who can present for 15 minutes with information (not a direct sales pitch) that will be of use to the members. Any members interested

in speaking should call or email me.

Special Offer from LIRR to Help Promote your Business Beginning October, 1, 2018, the MTA Long Island Rail Road will be launching a Customer Appreciation Program thanking our Monthly Ticket holders for their pat-ronage. This program lets a customer’s monthly rail ticket serve as a savings pass too! In other words, LIRR monthly customers will gain incentives/discounts when they present a valid monthly ticket to hundreds of vendors like you! With over 90,000 monthly customers riding the rails 5 days a week between Long Island and NYC this is a tremendous opportunity to connect and one you won’t want to miss.

To help make this program a success, here’s what the LIRR will do for the mer-chants and service providers that wish to join the program:

Create a dedicated webpage, where your business name and offer to LIRR

monthly ticket holders will be posted. A link to your website can be included too.

Distribute an LIRR Seat Drop – a flyer promoting the program that is placed

on LIRR seats (reaching 300,000 riders daily).

Insert a Mail & Ride flyer promoting the program in select Monthly Ticket

mailings - sent to approximately 25,000 LIRR monthly customers.

Display an ad promoting the program on digital screens in Penn Station and

Atlantic Terminal.

If you are interested in participating in this exciting program, here’s what you

need to do:

Create a value-added incentive for LIRR monthly ticket holders.

Complete an LIRR Monthly Customer Appreciation Merchant Offer sheet and

email it to [email protected]. All approved offers will be confirmed by email. *

Honor your offer when a customer presents their valid LIRR Monthly Ticket.

*Members can download the necessary forms by logging into the chamber’s mem-ber information center (RESOURCES tab) or by email [email protected]

Now is a Great Time to Organize Your Tax Records Submitted by Suzanne LoBiondo, CPA

The time to organize your tax records is now. Waiting until the end of the year or, even worse, waiting until you are audited can lead to headaches. Here are some tips to get on top of your tax records.

Storage Hints Organize your records by tax year. If you have not already done so, create a

folder for the current year’s files. Here are some filing suggestions.

Tax return and support. Create a file with copies of your signed tax return(s)

for the year. Include any support documents provided with your filed tax return.

Files in tax return order. Create your annual files to match the flow of your

1040 tax return. Here are some suggestions.

Income. Copies of W-2s, 1099s, Social Security statements, interest in-

come, K-1s, and investment activity go in this file.

Charitable Donations. Create a separate file for cash donations and one

for non-cash donations. Include a copy of your charitable mileage log in

this file.

Medical and Dental. Create a file for all your medical related expenses.

Include a copy of your medical related mileage log in this file.

Other itemized deduction file. In this file include all other proof of itemized deductions. This includes property tax statements, mortgage interest, and

state income tax documentation.

Business activity. Have a file for each hobby and business activity. Include

a copy of your business mileage log in this file.

Education. Create a file for all documents related to educational expens-es. Include in it copies of invoices, tuition and fees. Include invoices for music lessons, instruments and any materials required to purchase for your

student.

Other. Put all your miscellaneous receipts into this file. This includes re-ceipts you are unsure about like receipts for daycare, Form 1095s and

any other tax related items.

Statement file. Sort all your statements by vendor, then by month. Create a

separate file for these statements. This can include bank statements, credit card statements, and investment account statements. Consider creating a digital back

up copy of these statements and store them on a CD or USB drive.

The Digital Alternative If more of your records are in digital format, consider creating a tax folder for each year on your computer and then place your digital records into sub-folders

using the same sort as noted above. Create password protection for each folder.

Rotation idea Finally, at the end of each tax year place a note on the tax return to confirm the date your tax return was sent into the federal and/or state government. Note on the outside of this file when you can toss the support documentation. Go back to old tax years and shred the old documents that are no longer needed. Do not

take this action unless you know the length of time you will need to save these rec-

ords.
