AS YOU ALL KNOW, Hamilton Brothers and our sister company, Ross of Lanark have enjoyed a long association with the Massey Ferguson brand. Indeed, we recently unearthed documentation detailing the sale of our first Ferguson tractor from our original premises in Paisley in 1933. Now, we are delighted to tell you about another first! We have just been appointed Valtra agents for West and East Central Scotland making us an AGCO Multi-brand Dealership for the first time in our 80 plus year history!

“We are all very excited about this brand new development” says Hamilton Brothers’ MD Eric Gardiner. “There has been no dedicated Valtra dealer in our West Central Scotland territory for some considerable time. Not only can we now offer our customers an even wider choice of prestigious farm machinery, we can also give current Valtra tractor owners the level of service and support they deserve”.

To spearhead this new venture, Brian Hamilton has joined us

as a Valtra Sales Specialist to complement our existing team which includes Ken Smyth our Bishopton Agricultural Service Manager who honed his Valtra skills working for AGCO.

Having been a Valtra expert for over 10 years, Brian has extensive experience and knowledge of the brand and he is very passionate about his product. “Valtra tractors offer today’s Scottish farmers an immense degree of flexibility” enthuses Brian. They are a unique combination of YOUR needs merged with Finnish finesse and Nordic manufacturing know-how. Each tractor is literally tailor-made to suit YOUR preferences, requirements and of course budget. You can dine out on a feast of à la carte options including hydraulics, transmissions, cabs and even colour and Valtra will

manufacture and create the tractor machine of your dreams!

There are currently 4 Series of Valtra tractors ranging from 3-6 cylinder and 90 to a whopping 400hp. The Valtra ‘A’ Series HiTech (90-100hp) is Scandinavia’s top selling tractor and is the ideal stockman machine and the ‘N’ Series

(99-171hp) is an outstanding front loader tractor which makes it a great choice for the medium sized mixed farmer. The Valtra ‘T’ Series (170-225hp) with its impressive pulling power and cab comfort makes light work of heavy duty tasks demanded of

As we go to press, Valtra have just unveiled their biggest product launch in 25 years – the fourth generation Valtra ‘T’ Series billed as a ‘milestone in their history’. This brand new 6 cylinder T Series has been ‘Built Around the Driver’ and will be available from 155-250hp. Kept well under wraps, the launch attracted all the movers and shakers of the agricultural manufacturing industry including our Brian! “Apparently in Finland they don’t talk much, but I reckon they’ve managed to ‘finnish’ the year on a high!” he said on his return.

October saw our sales team venturing south for the much anticipated dealer launch of JCB’s 4000 Series Fastrac.

Could this once relatively niche market machine really now be a serious contender for broad based Agricultural tasks for our customers? In a word – YES!

We reckon JCB have once again managed to shoot to the top of the Agri-Charts and Fastrac their way to continued success in 2015 with yet another fantastic feat of engineering. With three models in the range, the 4160, 4190 and 4220 (from 180-240hp),

JCB have ingeniously retained all the original hallmark Fastrac features but brought them bang up to date by taking their Fastrac technology to a different level in terms of transmission, suspension, chassis and cab comfort. The end result is a powerhouse which will perform a diverse range of ground applications faster, more efficiently and even as JCB claim, save you 20 days a year! How?

Better give your Hamilton Brothers representative a call to find out more and organise that test drive because this all new JCB 4000 Series Fastrac really is worth investigating!

Farming Matters • Winter 2012/13 CustomerReview

When Darvel farmer James Ireland told our Tarbolton Depot Manager George Harvie that he really believed he had found a machine that could “climb every mountain”, it brought the sound of music to George’s ears!

James was referring to his newly purchased JCB 418S Wheeled Loading Shovel which has even surpassed James’s expectations.

Of 3rd generation farming stock, James, his father Jimmy and Uncle Andy operate neighbouring Feoch and Laigh Braidley Farms, an 800 acre sheep, livestock and arable enterprise, and they also service the needs of other grassland farmers with their J.H. Ireland contracting business.

This year James was looking to free up one of his two 220hp tractors and buckrakes for other seasonal tasks such as mowing and baling, so after

shopping around and trying out a few options, he ‘bucked’ the family trend of Massey’s and New Holland’s and invested for the first time in JCB.

“Initially I was concerned that the 418S might not be as a good for climbing in the silage pit, but my fears were unfounded” says James. “The unique direct drive torque converter lock up in all six gears makes it a true 4-wheel drive and very fuel efficient. It climbs higher and pushes harder to keep ensiling into the clamp so this 10 tonne powerhouse is now doing the work of two machines in half the time! It really is a dream machine” he quips.

James is so impressed with JCB technology that he’s now eagerly anticipating the imminent arrival of the first 4000 Series Fastrac demonstrator at Hamilton Brothers as he is now considering replacing his older tractors. Then again, he almost

bought a Valtra tractor a couple of years ago until he realised there was no service back-up in his area. With that having all changed now, it’s anyone’s guess as to which way the Ireland family might swing. Hopefully, it will be in the direction of Hamilton Brothers, because as a long standing family business… we like to keep it in the family!

Why JCB’S New 418S Wheeled Loader is James Ireland’s Dream Machine!

John Young our Construction Sales Manager just can’t keep the melon boat smile off his face having achieved two of his long term ambitions recently!

The first? Convincing Darren Gilmour, Malcolm Construction’s Plant Director that Wacker Neuson really is the wheel deal. The second? Delivering the UK’s very first Wacker Neuson EW100 10 Tonne Wheeled Excavator to Malcolm’s South Street Depot in Glasgow’s West End.

Original negotiations centred around a Wacker Neuson 9503 Excavator, but when Darren got wind there was a new excavator in the pipeline which could be manufactured to his exact specification, he decided to hold out for the custom built EW100. So after months of wheeling, dealing and demonstrating, the mighty powerful and versatile Wacker Neuson EW100 arrived hot from the production line

complete with its bespoke triple boom, all-wheel steer, rear stabiliser legs and powertilt coupler – wrapped of course in the Malcolm livery.

The Neuson name has always been synonymous with world class compact excavation machinery, but the 2007 merger with Wacker, supremos of Light Equipment such as the industry leading ‘Wacker Plates’ was sheer genius. Our MD Eric Gardiner is just back from a whistle-stop tour of the Group’s state-of-the-art plant in Lintz, Austria which he described as “exhausting but exhilarating!”

“There’s no doubt their unique products have revolutionised today’s construction industry and it’s fantastic that the

Malcolm Group are now flying the Wacker Neuson flag with a little help from Hamilton Brothers!”

Planning on laying foundations or landscaping over the coming months? As a One-Stop – Shop for Wacker Neuson compact machinery and light equipment, we have some great winter deals on offer for new and used machinery so give John Young a call on 01292 541445 or 07881 814 702 and you won’t have to dig too deep!

Service

IF YOU FEEL your day to day farming life these days is a minefield of health and safety legislation and legal requirements before you even switch on the ignition, then consider this.

In the last ten years, almost one person a week has been killed as a direct result of agricultural work and many more have suffered serious injury or succumbed to long term illness.

According to the Health and Safety Executive, agriculture

has the highest fatality and injury rate of any other industry. We were therefore delighted to participate in the recent SHAD (Safety and Health Awareness Day) event at Hamilton Football Stadium

organised by LANTRA on behalf of the HSE. The demonstrations were excellent covering all aspects of machine safety, trailer braking, use of ATV’s, lift trucks, manual handling, working at heights and even livestock and chemical handling. These nationwide events have statistically proven to reduce the number of farm related incidents, so if you didn’t make it along, we would recommend booking your place for the next one!

Do you know about the new legislation coming in from March next year increasing the maximum combination weight limit for tractors and trailers from 24.39 to 31 tonnes and from 20 to 25 MPH for conventional tractors? This represents an increase of 27% in your gross vehicle trail weight, but the question is – are your brakes up to speed?

One of our good customers couldn’t understand why his braking distances were inexplicably getting longer. Convinced the problem was with his MF6480, he arrived in a panic at our Bishopton Depot trailing his 3,000 gallon twin axle slurry tanker. Tests revealed the braking system on his tractor was tip top but he was astonished

when our engineers revealed that his tanker brakes had a 16% performance rate when loaded. Fortunately, in this instance a sticky end to his tanker or worse, himself or his tractor was avoided!

Pay heed to this cautionary tale

Please pay heed to this cautionary tale because brake lining material is a seriously destructive substance which will work its way into your oil galleries, steering units and hydraulic valves potentially bringing you to a grinding halt with the prospect of a repair bill of thousands of pounds. A simple, cheap by comparison brake test by our BAGMA approved technicians will not only save you money – it could potentially save your life!

We’re doing our bit for Health & Safety…are YOU?

New Legislation Are your brakes up to speed? Look behind you!

______COMING SOON!______

When did you last get your trailer or tanker brake tested? If you can’t remember, you are not alone because currently we have an industry wide epidemic of ‘under braked’ trailed equipment in use.

With new legislation coming into force in March 2015, you can find out everything you need to know to ensure your tractor and trailed equipment meet the correct criteria by downloading ‘Look Behind You’ prepared by the Agricultural Engineers Association from our website. www.hamiltonbros.co.uk/are-your-brakes-up-to-speed/

It is only a matter of time until brake testing also becomes a legal requirement but in the meantime, please, don’t be tempted to put the brakes on your service expenditure or you could pay a hefty price!

We all recognise the importance of servicing our tractors, but defective braking systems on trailers and tankers are simply an accident waiting to happen. Again we have been investing in the very latest brake testing diagnostic equipment and our BAGMA trained team are ready to put your tractor, trailer or tanker to the test. Looking to buy 2nd hand machinery?Do whatever makes you Click!

North of Scotland Farmer takes the Slow Road for a Quicke but gets there in the end!The power of the World Wide Web never ceases to amaze us as enquiries about 2nd hand machinery on our website ping in from all corners of the globe 24/7 from our customers PC’s, mobile phones and tablets!

But most recently, we were tickled by the tale of an intrepid farmer who helped us plunder northern Scotland by a much more conventional means… a good, old fashioned landline!

A few months ago he decided it was time for a change. He was a man with a mission. Thinking big and seeing red it was time to take the bull by the horns. He had something very specific in mind and it HAD to be a Massey Ferguson 6480, registered 2011 or 2012 with the absolute ‘must have’ of a self-levelling Quicke loader. There hadn’t been a Massey on his family farm since 1955, so he was not going to give up until he found it!

He contacted his local dealers and a few others in the area to no avail. Unperturbed he placed a couple of adverts in ‘Farmers Weekly’, but still not a beep. Like a dog with a bone he wasn’t going to be

thwarted. His brother, a fellow farmer in the Central Belt suggested it might be worth contacting his local Massey Dealers, ‘Hamiltons’, so he grabbed the phone – yes PHONE, dialled directory enquiries, (WHO? we hear some of you say) and got put through to our namesake (but no relation), Hamilton Tractors of Lanark! No sorry, they couldn’t help, but try giving Hamilton Brothers in Bishopton a call as they are Massey dealers!

So, on a sunny Saturday afternoon he made the call that turned his mission impossible into completely possible! “Firstly, I was shocked that someone answered the phone on a Saturday afternoon, and secondly, I couldn’t believe it when Jim Steel, General Manager informed me that he was sure he had a MF 6480 that met my criteria coming into stock shortly!”

Three weeks later he was Bishopton bound. Again on a Saturday. “The place was buzzing and all the staff were just fantastic. Jim and I did the deal quick as flash” or was that ‘Quicke’ as a flash? The loader

wasn’t self-levelling, so quick thinking, he sold it back to Jim and ordered a new Quicke loader!

Just as he took delivery of his MF6480, another farmer from the same area purchased a 2nd hand tractor he’d spotted on our Hamilton Brothers website, so he even got to keep his old tractor for a few weeks until it was convenient for us to arrange collection!

“I was so impressed with the service I received that I even recommended Hamilton Brothers to my friend down the road who has just bought a MF 6485 followed by a Herbst low loader and dump trailer!”

We are of course delighted this customer went to such great lengths to track us down by landline, but the moral of this tale is… if he had gone online to www.hamiltonbros.co.uk he could have achieved the same result in minutes!

If he’d gone online he could have achieved the same result in minutes!

Being prepared is calf the battle!Healthy heifers prevent hefty losses…our top tips for a productive calving season.

12

WITH MANY of you now opting to calve in the winter months during housing, preparation is paramount to ensure a productive and problem free calving season.

Earlier this year a Farmers Guardian article reported “with between 12 and 14 per cent of calves failing to survive to weaning in lowland and upland suckler herds, producers are being advised to look at ways to minimise losses”.

These losses occur during pregnancy, at calving and pre-weaning, so whether your herds are dairy or suckler, like a crop of barley or potatoes, the cows and calves need to

be nurtured throughout the entire process or you could find yourself paying the price. Plus, healthy heifers prevent hefty losses!

We have everything you need at Hamilton Brothers to handle your general husbandry, cubicle management, hygiene and

nutrition plus a host of mineral drenches, colostrums and an abundance of lotions, potions and birthing gadgets to nip any potential natal or post natal problems in the bud.

Prior to calving, pens should be sterilised. We recommend power washing using an effective disinfectant such as Kilco’s Virex (a powder formula available in 5 kilo tubs) or Antec’s (20 litre) liquid Hyperox. If possible leave the pens to dry for a couple of days before laying down fresh bedding which will act as a protective blanket from the cold, concrete floor. This clean, comfortable environment will avoid stressing the dam which

Calves need to be nurtured throughout the entire process or you could find yourself paying the price.

as you know could result in slow or difficult delivery or potentially impact on appetite and milk production post calving.

If there is a history of milk fever (hypocalcaemia), we would suggest administering a bolus such as 24/7 Agrimin 24 hours before delivery. Alternatively a supply of 40% injectable calcium could be kept handy. For the birthing process itself, we have a wide variety of long sleeve disposable latex gloves and a variety of manual and mechanical calving aids to keep the production line going!

Immediately after birth the newborn calf’s navel should be treated with a strong iodine solution applied either with a pump spray or from a teat dip

cup, both of which we have in stock. This practise will prevent harmful bacteria from penetrating the calf’s system.

It’s also imperative that six pints of colostrum should be ingested by the calf within the first 6 hours of birth either directly from the dam or via a powdered mineral rich colostrum such as Provita’s Calf Colostrum. We’re offering a FREE CALF STOMACH TUBE with every 6 x 300g pack purchased while stocks last. Colostrum helps build up passive immunity from diseases endemic to the farm and it will protect the calf in the first 2-3 months of life after which time we can advise on appropriate vaccines which will ensure the on-going wellbeing of the animal.

As you know, the first week after calving can be frantic as there are so many other tasks which need to be attended to such as ear tagging (primary within 36 hours and secondary within 20 days), disbudding , castration and of course feeding. We like to think we ‘moooove’ with the times at Hamilton Brothers with our up to the minute range of Animal Health supplies. So from milk powder, buckets, teats, valves and needles to dehorning pastes, irons, rubber rings and burdizzos, one call or e-mail to our Animal Health team will help you prepare for a hassle free calving season. What’s more, with our fantastic offers, you’ll even manage to save a substantial buck. You ‘herd ‘ it here first!

It’s hard to believe it was 2009 when Hughie McLean (our pint sized larger than life character) took to the hills in retirement.

How could we replace the irreplaceable? The short answer is we can’t, but we are delighted to announce the recent appointment of Alastair Dixon as Area Sales Manager for Argyll and the Isles, who in our opinion is the perfect man for the job!

Many of you will know Alastair who hails from 3rd generation farming stock having grown up on Killinochonoch Farm, Lochgilphead. On leaving school he studied land engineering for a year at Barony College, Dumfries prior to securing a three year apprenticeship at Hamilton Brothers, qualifying as an Agricultural engineer. “I’m really excited about this challenge” says Alastair. “It’s a fantastic opportunity to go back to my roots and put my passion for agricultural machinery and technical ability to the test”. We wish Alastair every success in his new career and we’re sure that it won’t be long until our Argyll and Island customers agree that this appointment was well worth waiting for! If you’re thinking of upgrading your machinery and would like some advice, give Alastair a call on 07771 577889.

We’re really impressed with Teagle’s latest innovation, the hydraulically driven Telehawk Straw Bedder which has been specifically designed to attach to the increasingly popular Telehandler.

Front mounted for maximum visibility, the Telehawk will effortlessly load and process round or rectangular bales of straw and spread materials up to 3.5 metres in any direction via fan and swivel chute to access even the most awkward pens! Electronic, hydraulic controls gently tease the bale apart using a low speed crossbeater while the operator regulates placement from a slimline control desk utilising Bluetooth technology to communicate from cab to machine.

Watch the Telehawk in action and visit our website at: http://www.hamiltonbros.co.uk/agricultural/new-machinery/teagle/ or give your local Hamilton Brothers Depot a call to find out more about this terrific machine!

Good News for our Argyll & Island customers!
