Faringdon Chamber of Commerce has been asked by theVale of White Horse District Council to help in deciding howto invest £22,500 of Government funding into helpingimprove our "high street" right here, right now, inFaringdon. The Chamber held on open meeting on the 4th

September and was delighted with the number of peoplewho came along and would like to thank everyone for theirideas.Chamber President, Paul Brame said “It was reassuring tome that there remain so many lively and mainly constructiveopinions in this town and whilst this is the case we stand achance of getting things changed for the better.Opportunities like this project only come up once in a whileand I am pleased that we are able to contribute to thisprocess”.The ideas that came from the meeting included; setting up a

“Town Team” that would bring together many of the localgroups that could work on the development of a marketingstrategy for the town; helping the Pink Pigeon Trust with thepurchase of their “Berners Banners”; Floral decoration andbetter signage throughout the town. The ideas have nowbeen sent to the Vale of White Horse District Council forconsideration. Monday 3rd September saw the latest monthly meeting ofthe Faringdon Business Breakfast Club (FBBC) held at theSudbury House Hotel in Faringdon.After the summer holidays and feeling refreshed and raringto go, 25 local businesses attended the event eager to dobusiness and exchange referrals over coffee and breakfast.Paul Brame (Chairman) was away at the Paralympics so MaryThomas (Concise Training) stood in and did a sterling job.Neil O'Regan from Shawcity kicked off the 60 secondintroductions by showing a Gas Detector used by the FireService. Other businesses present included a thrillerwriter/publisher, surveyors, accountants and coachesamongst others.Mary Thomas announced that September's meeting was the4th anniversary of her attending FBBC and as Paul (theresident poet) was away members were treated to a shortpiece of poetry from Lawrence Harrison (TaxAssist). The speaker was Stuart Roper of Milagro Designs and heposed the question”Why use an Illustrator?" Stuarthighlighted how illustrations can be used with great effecton various types of advertising, children's books, websitesand even murals on the front of empty shop premises.FBBC is an informal Business Networking Club which hasbeen attended by in excess of 250 members. It meets at 7.30a.m. on the first working Monday of each month at theSudbury House Hotel. There is no membership fee and nolimitations on which businesses can attend. I suspect that like many people, including myself, your firstintroduction to whisky was a blended whisky i.e. a mix ofmalt and grain whiskies. This is no great surprise when youconsider that the original reason blends were created was tomake the often fiery and unpalatable whisky of olden dayssofter, smoother and more consistent.

Nowadays blends account for the vast majority of whiskysold worldwide so how come once we discover single maltswe tend to ignore blends? Here at Arkwrights we stronglyfeel that blended whisky should not be considered the poorrelation of the whisky world.

Blending is an art that requires an excellent nose (RichardPaterson of Whyte & Mackay has his insured for £1.5million…) and the skill of knowing exactly what whiskies arerequired to give a blend it’s character and consistency. Asone blender put it ‘It’s like an orchestra, with someinstruments being more dominant than others but if therewas one element missing it would not be as harmonious’.

More than 90% of whisky produced goes into blends,including big names such as Macallan, Highland Park etc.Additionally, the only reason some distilleries still exist todayis that their whisky has some unique characteristic that is indemand by the blenders. So, all in all, blends contributehugely to keeping single malts viable as well as beingextremely enjoyable in their own right.

For everyday drinking you can’t go far wrong with the Big T,a quality blend that comprises 30% malt whisky and 70% grainexcellent value at only £13.49! If you want to move up anotch then try blends that have a higher ratio of malt, suchas the (far too) drinkable Great King Street Blend which is50/50. The next step up is blends where the whiskies have aminimum age – starting with something like the smooth andlight Antiquary 12 year old and moving up through theexcellent Whyte & Mackay 22 year old before (moneyallowing!) experiencing perhaps one of the best whiskiesKen or I have ever tasted, the Whyte & Mackay 40 year old.

Restaurant Review

The highly acclaimed period drama series ‘DowntonAbbey’ is set in a fictional Yorkshire country house andfollows the lives of the aristocratic ‘Crawley Family’ andtheir servants.Like me’ some of you may be surprised to hear, thatalthough set in Yorkshire, the exterior scenes are filmedin Bampton?Located in the market square of this picturesque villageis the lovely new restaurant Biztro.Owner, Biz Gooddy, (hence the name) converted theground floor of her established Bed and Breakfastbusiness into a country style restaurant that oozescharacter and rustic charm.The cosy dining room seats 24, tables are perfectlypositioned, providing a relaxed and spacious ambiencethat feels just right.Cuisine on offer is French/British, with the emphasis onfresh, honest, locally produced food at an affordableprice.We chose starters of – Home-made French onion soup -King Prawns, pan fried in garlic and parsley butter,served on salad leaves.Presentation for both dishes was superb and tasteddelicious; the soup in particular, was one of the best Ihave tried. For mains we opted for – Freshly caughtsalmon fillet, served on a bed of creamy mashed potatowith watercress, peas and chorizo - Oxfordshire rumpsteak with Madeira sauce, salad and home-made chips.The steak was cooked perfectly, the salmon tastedextremely good, both ate as well as they looked. Wearrived fairly early and by the time we had finished ourtwo courses, the restaurant started to fill up, this onlyadded to atmosphere which we enjoyed very much.Quite full at this point, we selected to share (well youhave to don’t you!) Crème brulee and home-madevanilla ice cream in a brandy snap basket, which lookedlike a photograph from glossy magazine, lovely..For all you dessert lovers out there, we noticed a coupleat the table opposite delving into – Duo of chocolatefondant and gnache, served with chocolate ice creamAutumn berry pavlova, judging by their grins and giggles,this is one to add to your list- It looked amazing!The evening was extremely enjoyable, a great littlerestaurant with excellent food and service.The Biztro really is the BIZ!!

(Prunella modularis)The plain and rather drab looking Dunnock is morecommonly known as the Hedge Sparrow, they mayappear quite Sparrow- like, but on closer inspection itsslim build and fine pointed bill prove that this quiet littlebird is in fact not a Sparrow at all. Surprisingly, they arepart of the accentor bird family, with its closest relativebeing the much larger Thrush.They tend to go unnoticed in the garden as they aremainly ground feeders, feeding on insects from leaf litterand undergrowth. During autumn and winter monthsthey will eat berries and seeds and even venture on tothe bird table, constantly flicking their wings in anagitated manner.The sex life of the Dunnock is an extremely complicatedone, during the breeding season, males will mate with upto 3 females at a time, females have been known to takeon 4 or 5 partners in one go.Each nest is built by the female, normally in shrubs andhedges, clutches of 4-5 eggs are produced 2 or 3 timesper year. Once the eggs hatch the female’s promiscuouslifestyle is then rewarded by all of her partners bringingfood to her young. As for the males, well I guess they justlike it!There was a serious decline in the Dunnock populationduring the 1980’s and although their numbers are nowincreasing, they have another problem to deal with.The Cuckoo is a species renowned for laying eggs in thenests of other birds and unfortunately for the Dunnock,they are the number one host for the Cuckoo.A female Cuckoo, visiting the nest of the Dunnock, willremove one of the Dunnock’s eggs before laying one ofher own directly into the nest. Despite the egg beingdifferent in size and colour, the Dunnock willcontinue incubation, until the Cuckoo egg hatches.The Cuckoo chick will then go about removing anyDunnock eggs or young from the nest, securing all theattention of its adopted parents.Perhaps the Dunnock is more interesting than we think?

| The Advertiser | page 19 | Talk to the Vet!Wow, another year has passed and we are now heading towards November looking forward to some fantasticfirework displays for Diwali and Guy Fawkes night. Sadly, some of our four legged friends are often less enthralled with theidea of bright colours and loud noises flashing above their homes. As their family, we feel desperately helpless and worriedabout how we can help them overcome their anxiety.

Dogs and cats can very easily become fearful of something. This fear can perpetuate until they are beside themselves withworry. It often starts as quite an innocuous thing. A car backfiring startled them and now any noise that sounds similar to thatis something to be afraid off. Unfortunately, our love of our pets often reinforces this behaviour. Our natural instinct is tocomfort our dog who was upset by the big scary noise. What we are actually saying to our dog or cat when we do this is that isits OK to be scared of this noise! So the very next time it happens, they think it is OK to be scared because mummy and daddyare going to cuddle me. And of course, that is what we do!

So, breaking the fear cycle is the best approach to management of dogs or cats who are scared. This should start when theyare young. Early socialisation allows them to be exposed to a variety of objects, noises, people, etc. You can even obtain a CDfor your puppy that contains all the most commonly present noises and sounds! Once they have learnt that a car is a normalthing in their environment, they are less likely to be fearful of it. The same goes for loud noises. If we expose a puppy to a loudnoise that startles them, but behave as if nothing has happened, they will soon realise that it is not a scary thing, and nothingto worry about.

Of course, this is a harder task with the older dog/cat, who has already learnt to be afraid of fireworks. But, there are varioustools available to us to help our dogs/cats during this stressful time, and hopefully we will be able to get them over their fear.

1.) As the season of fireworks approaches, you could speak to us about placing a plug-in diffuser pack of a dogpheromone called ADAPTIL or one for cats called FELIWAY. That will relax them (don't worry – it won't affect you!).However to have maximum effect, it needs to be plugged into the home two to three weeks before the fireworks aredue to start,so plan and think ahead!

2.) There are also zylkene capsules available – these contain a protein that is present in the bitch's or queen's milk. It hascalming properties. The tasteless capsules can be opened up sprinkled on the pet’s food. This treatment should startat least 2 days before the expected scary event.

3.) Once the fireworks have started, you can also do a few things around the house . Keeping your pets indoors isparamount. Closing all the windows and shutting the curtains helps reduce the sounds and lights coming into thehome. You could also play some music, or put the TV on, to drown out the external noises. Make a ‘den’ for your petto hide in. Ideally, get this den ready a couple of days before so they can get used to feeling safe in it.

4.) It is very important that you do not reassure your pet if it is getting very distressed. As we have already said, thissimply helps reinforce the fear. It is much better to give your dog a quiet safe place they can be for the evening, andfor him/her to stay there. You can be in the room too if that will help keep your pet relaxed. If your pet is relaxedwhen fireworks are going off, you can praise them for this (correct behaviour), it can reinforce the correct, andrelaxed, response to fireworks.

We would recommend that your pets are also microchipped. More pets going missing this time of year than any other. Theyare often frightened and confused if a firework unexpectedly goes off and just ‘run’ getting lost and unable to find their wayhome!

So what prevents us from losing weight?

Last month we looked at exercises to burn fat, but even ifyou think you have done everything right why do somepeople not lose weight?

· Over eating: Eating more calories than we burn offis the obvious one. Excess energy is stored in thebody as fat.

· Being inactive: When you lose your muscle massby being inactive, you need less energy (calories)to maintain what is left. It becomes possible togain weight easily even with a modest calorieintake and nearly impossible to lose weight.

· Hormone imbalances: Hormonal imbalance mayhave a negative impact on the metabolism (therate at which you burn energy), which could be thecause of weight gain despite a healthy diet andexercise. Hormones usually work with your bodyand, the more you exercise, the more you benefitfrom their effect. The more active you are, themore hormones you will release, which will helpwith weight loss. There are exceptions however,and increases in the levels of some hormones canactually reduce the body’s ability to burn fat.

· The hormones that can affect the ability to burnfat are:

· Testosterone: Testosterone is known to boost themetabolism and lower fat levels, so a decline in thishormone could be the cause of weight gain inmales. If a man became less active, there would bea gradual decline in testosterone. Resistancetraining may help to reverse this situation.

· Oestrogen: Oestrogen increases fat breakdown,elevates your mood and increases yourmetabolism. A decrease in oestrogen can lead toweight gain and obesity. When women go throughthe menopause their oestrogen levels naturallydecline, and any excess calories are stored in thefat cells, particularly around the abdomen.Growth Hormone: Helps to reduce body fat andregulate blood sugar. Its release is increased themore you exercise.

· Raised Insulin levels: Insulin is responsible forpushing nutrients from the food you eat to theirrespective places in the body and if necessarycreating fat. It also inhibits fat loss. When insulinlevels are raised we reduce our chances of burningfat.

· Cortisol: Cortisol is another hormone that plays animportant role in regulating blood sugar, energyproduction, inflammation, the immune system andhealing. Stress and poor sleep patterns elevatecortisol levels, which contributes to theaccumulation of abdominal fat.

· Weight loss isn’t always just a case of reducingyour calorie intake and exercising more, howeverthat’s a good place to start. The team at the Gymat Carswell are here to help you reach your weightloss goal, with support, encouragement andpractical advice.

differs from its vitis vinifera (wine grape)collegues in that it was created in South Africa in 1925 byAbraham Perold, Professor of Viticulture at StellenboschUniversity.He crossed two vitis varieties, the high yielding, easyripening cinsault (aka in South Africa as hermitage) and thefickle but elegant pinot noir. The aim to make a new varietythat was able to produce grapes that ripened consistently,providing flavours that were reminiscent of the great winesof Burgundy.Typically, the colour of pinotage is a very deep to opaqueruby, with savoury aromas of earthiness and brambles.For me, the flavour profile is focussed on primary fruits; rich,ripe plums, blackberries and mulberries with a subliminalsavoury note. Pinotage hovers around 14 % abv mark, andthe tannins are often grippy.Problems that have arisen with this grape variety is that it ishard to achieve a lower alcohol content and it is noted thatit can sometimes show ‘spiritiness’ that can be described asacetone in flavour.I am pleased to have discovered a good example foundlocally, so I encourage you to give pinotage a whirl!

Unusual Insurance Claims:

Have you ever been hit by a frozen squirrel while driving? Has a rabid magpie ever flown in your bedroomwindow, stolen your spectacles and made a break for it, glasses in beak or has a naked pedestrian ever jumpedon your car, leapt onto the roof, jumped up and down and then run away, never to be seen or heard from again?

So say some insurance policyholders, who have made unusual insurance claims.

Animal Events

When real disasters occur, insurance provides a vital and necessary lifeline that helps policyholders regain their footing

and start life over. But sometimes a freak incidence occurs - and convincing the insurance company that the claim is

real becomes rather challenging. Take the gardener who, buying plants at a local nursery, exited the shop just in time

to see a passing camel kick and damage his car. It transpires that a local television crew just happened to be in the area

filming nearby and caught the camel footage on camera - corroborating the man's story for his insurer.

In another case, a man approached his car following a fishing expedition and saw a cow chewing on something long

and black. As he came closer, he realized it was his windscreen wiper, which contained salt deposits from a long

weekend at the coast. Upon further inspection, it was discovered the cow had licked his vehicle from bumper to bumper,

ruining every bit of rubber along the way. "Cows like salt," the man later explained. "They saw the vehicle as a huge salt

lick!"

Burglars and Home Owners

Insurers say they're constantly amazed at some of the bizarre situations for which policyholders file claims, ranging from

the serious to the downright outrageous. One burglar robbed a house and, in the process, locked himself in the garage.

Because the garage door opener was broken, and the homeowners were away on vacation, he was stuck there for more

than a week and forced to survive on the dog food and soda stored inside. When finally released from his prison, the

man escaped and then sued the owners for undue mental anguish. He won!

A common claim in pubs, hotels and night clubs (as well as at home) is caused by people tripping over their own mess

(a spilled drink or a discarded handbag) and then suing the owner of the property for negligence. Don’t forget to clean

up after your guests!.
