Thank you to everyone who made the day successful. To the grounds and maintenance staff, the teachers who ran events, organised food, motivated and supervised age groups on the day. To the parents who came along to support and assist with the running of the day, and to the Physical Education Department who organised and ran pre-carnival events throughout Week 2, as well as running events and organising on the day.

It was a huge team effort which make these events come together and run so smoothly. Finally, thank you to the students who attended, helped and participated to the best of their ability and in the right spirit of the Carnival.

META Art Exhibition I am pleased to announce that Lizzy Bognar, from the Year 12 Certificate III in Visual Arts course, had her work selected for this year’s META Exhibition. The opening night, held at North Metropolitan TAFE on Tuesday, 1st August, saw a variety of works exhibited from schools across the state. Lizzy’s work Curiosity, is a reflection on the theme ‘observe, collect, protect and preserve’, and focusses on the idea of preserving childhood innocence and curiosity through the imagery of the firefly insect jar. We congratulate Lizzy on her wonderful achievement, and wish her and the Year 12 Art students all the best in completing their last artworks for the year. Mrs Amy Richardson Head of Visual Arts

International Food Hawkers Market

This term Mrs Lafitte’s three Year 10 Food classes held their International Food Hawkers Markets. All students worked hard this term to produce both a sweet and savoury dish to present to a teacher of their choice and other students. After exploring different countries and cuisines all students were required to work with a partner to choose a country, research recipes from that country, adjust the recipes to serve 24 portions of each, make the food and present it on the day. The feedback from teachers was that the food presented was of excellent quality, and all students in these classes are to be congratulated for their diligence and hard work to prepare and present food to such a high standard. Congratulations on such a wonderful achievement.

Year 7 Archaelogy Incursion In Year 7 Social Sciences, students are studying archaeology and investigating how archaeologists locate and analyse sources as clues from the past.

On 21st and 24th July, all Year 7 classes were visited by a team of archaeologists from Archae-Aus. They brought with them treasure boxes containing artefacts found at a dig sites in Perth. In uncovering these hidden treasures, students found coins from the 1930’s, cutlery, broken crockery and glass as evidence of European settlement. They also found charcoal, cutting stones, shells and bones as evidence of Aboriginal settlements in the area. These artefacts were used by students in drawing conclusions about how people in the past lived here and understanding history through the use of sources. Mrs Adele Baker Head of Social Sciences

Catholic Performing Arts Festival

This week saw another amazing week of performances at the Catholic Performing Arts Festival. Brass Ensemble travelled to Thornlie performing Carol of the Bells. The group did a fantastic job showing the progress they have made as an ensemble over the year. On Tuesday, 1st August four of the College Rock Bands took to the stage at Corpus Christie for what was an outstanding night. The Year 9 Rock Band, Year 10 Rock Band, Year 11 Rock Band and The Hepcats, rocked the stage with lots of energy and enthusiasm. On Wednesday, 2nd August Year 10 students, Alex Hardy and Declan Russell performed their electric guitar solos at Zenith Music in Claremont and the Percussion Ensemble performed at Trinity College. An outstanding day all round with fantastic feedback.

Cheerleading

On Sunday, 30th July the Irene McCormack Catholic College Hurricanes Cheerleading Team competed at the Rock N Cheer Competition held at HBF Arena. We arrived at the competition feeling confident and ready to hit the floor. After months of training for this competition we gave it our all and achieved 3rd place. For many of the team members it was their first ever cheer competition and the vibe was electric. I’m looking forward to the next three cheer competitions. Let’s go Hurricanes! Soccer Report This week the College had three teams competing in the School Sports WA Champion Schools Soccer Tournament, as part of the top 32 teams in their age group in the state. On Monday, 31st July the Senior Girls played at home against the Mercy Catholic College’s ‘C’ team. Again, the Senior Girls had a very solid line up and it was obvious right from the start that the girls were significantly stronger and more skilful than their opposition. All our girls had a positive impact on the game and they were dominant across all areas of the pitch. The girls played exceptionally well as a team with multiple goal scorers in an incredible 11-0 win. Again, the Senior Girls have set the tone for the rest of the College teams to follow.

Also on Monday, 31st July, the Year 8 Boys travelled to Guildford Grammar College in probably the worst conditions I have seen for football, with constant rain, strong winds and a water-soaked pitch. In the 4th minute, Guildford Grammar took the lead but 4 minutes later, Amanjot Sehmi took a quick throw in and Luke Moyser ran onto the ball to level the score 1-1. The game then went from end to end for the next 50 minutes, with both teams having multiple chances. Joshua Thew made some incredible saves in a Man of the Match performance, to keep us in the game. The defence led by Sam Parkin and the midfield with Derek Johnstone, also made significant contributions. The game was heading for extra time and possibly a penalty shoot-out, which we didn’t want as the boys had suffered enough in the weather, before the amazing happened. Luke had another cracking shot which the goal keeper couldn’t hold onto and with about 10 seconds before the final whistle, Logan Wilson ran in to smash it into the net, and to win the game with the last kick of the match. The celebrations that ensued will be remembered forever as it showed how much the win meant to the boys. This was probably the most satisfying win I have been involved in at the College, so well done boys. On Wednesday, 2nd August the Year 9 Boys played at Chisholm Catholic College, a traditionally strong soccer school. With almost half of the starting players unavailable for our College team, the boys were on the back foot already. Unfortunately, Chisholm had a full-strength team and the boys found it difficult to get into the game and the much bigger boys from Chisholm were better with the ball. The score line wasn’t a flattering one for us and the Chisholm goals came from a variety of sources and methods, with the final score being 9-0 to Chisholm. To their credit, our boys didn’t stop all game and came close to scoring on a few occasions, which will make them even stronger for next year. Knockout Round of 16 Fixtures:

Congratulations to these three teams in making it in the top 16 teams in the state. Please come along and support these teams. Good luck next week. Mr Damian Stefanoff Soccer Academy Coordinator

Tarzara and Evie both played in the WA invitational team WA Gold. The girls lost their first game to WA Black, but then beat the ACT to become the first invitational team to win at a national carnival.
