Cognitive load theory: Research that teachers really need to understand (2017) is a paper published by the Centre for Education Statistics and Evaluation. Cognitive load is defined as the total amount of mental effort being used in the working memory. Working memory is understood to be the thinking skills required at a particular time to perform complex tasks such as reasoning, comprehension and learning. It is the memory system where small amounts of information are stored for a very short duration.

Cognitive load research then, is about developing instructional techniques that fit within the characteristics of working memory. It is about teachers understanding how working memory functions including knowing its limitations, so that learning can be maximised. If working memory is overloaded, there is a greater risk that the content being taught will not be understood by the learner, will be misinterpreted or confused, will not be effectively encoded in long-term memory, and that learning will be slowed down.

Cognitive load theory has produced a number of recommendations for teachers regarding instructional techniques that maximise the effectiveness of the working memory:

• TheworkedexampleeffectThis is the understanding that the working memory of the novice student can become overloaded and they may not recognise and remember the rule to quickly solve the same problem again. To facilitate success the teacher provides the students with a problem that has already been solved with every step fully explained and clearly shown.

• TheredundancyeffectThis is the understanding that students do not learn effectively when their limited working memory is directed to unnecessary or redundant information. An example is a PowerPoint presentation in which the presenter reads the text presented on the screen. Requiring learners to process redundant information inhibits learning because it overloads working memory.

• ThesplitattentioneffectThis is the understanding that irrelevant information interferes with learning such as when learners are required to process two or more sources of information simultaneously in order to understand the material. For example, when a diagram is used to explain a concept but it cannot be understood without referring to a separate piece of explanatory text.

• ThemodalityeffectThis is the understanding that working memory can be subdivided into auditory and visual streams so that presenting information using both auditory and visual working memory can increase working memory capacity. For example, when using a diagram and text to explain a concept, the written text can be communicated in spoken form to facilitate more effective learning.

Cognitive load theory is interesting and important. It is about understanding how we learn best, and how to maximise teacher effectiveness to engage learners and improve student outcomes.

NEWSLETTER - T4 W9 December 2017

We have had yet another action packed few weeks in Kindergarten. The Bring and Buy Sale was a huge hit with us all. There were some very enthusiastic parents and grandparents, supporting their children and grandchildren in their quest to become successful entrepreneurs.

We have also seen a lot of Kindergarten children receiving their first Ashfield Public School medal this term. These children have been following the nine Wellbeing goals with true diligence and success. See if your child can list the goals for you and identify their favourite as well as justify why. P.S here they are: Respectful, Responsible, Resilient, Safe, Friend, Fabulous, Learner, Inclusive and Diverse.

Week 7 welcomed the Kindergarten 2018 children and parents to our school. We loved getting to know these new students and can’t wait to see their happy smiling faces on Monday 5th February 2018. While our Kindergarten teachers were busy with the pre-schoolers the children enjoyed their time in the Year One classrooms.

2017 is finally wrapping up! The Stage 1 teachers could not be more proud of the successful learning and achievements of all students.

This term we’ve had a ball with gymnastics. We have been building our strength, flexibility and balance. We have also learnt how to safely swim to prepare us for pool and beach trips in the holidays.

Our English program this term has taught us about old and new versions of fairy tales. In particular, we focused on the fairy tale, The Little Mermaid. We discovered lots of interesting similarities and differences between the old Hans Christian Andersen version of the story and the new Disney film version.

From all the Stage 1 teachers, we wish every family a safe and adventurous holiday. We look forward to the new year ahead in 2018.

Stage 2 Excursion to the Rocks:

On the 20th of November, all of Stage 2 embarked on a historical and geographical journey to the city to see how places are similar and different over time. We started the day in the Rocks, one of the oldest parts of Sydney and were led through its history on a fabulous walking tour. Stage 2 were even able to dress up in costumes to make our experience authentic. After the great tour we headed over to Circular Quay to visit Customs House and viewed a model of the city under a glass floor. Students were able to be detectives and used the model to complete a scavenger hunt on key places in the city. They had to look out for how many wharfs there are at Circular Quay, how many arches the Opera House has and where was Hyde Park? The students had a great day exploring the city!

Stage 2 was also excited to participate in a mini science excursion at Ashfield Public Library. Stage 2 was invited to watch the Surfing Scientist put on a dazzling show of cool science experiments and displays. Not only was it interesting and engaging but it was also full of great science facts and skills.

Stage 2 has some exciting events coming up for the end of the term:

• LifeEducationWeek–Week9• 3/4M – 6th December• 3/4K – 8th December• 3/4V - 8th December

• SchoolPicnic - 7th December• Ashfield’sGotTalent– 15th December• LastDayoftheTerm– 15th DecemberStay up to date with everything happening in Stage 2 via our twitter feeds and the Enews app.

We are very proud of all the students in Stage 2 for their hard work and persistence this term.

This Year 5 had the most wonderful time at Berry Sport and Recreation Camp. They were accompanied by Mrs Gurney, Miss Rail, Miss Kassabian and Miss Melia. Year 5 participated in many fun and challenging activities including rock climbing, vertical challenges, raft building, kayaking, a dark maze and archery. Students had the opportunity to practise communication skills and teamwork in many of the activities. They learnt to be brave, resilient, responsible and show respect for their peers. Teachers were overwhelmingly impressed by the standard of behaviour from our Year 5 students, well done!

Week 7 was a busy week with many of our Year 6 students attending a transition program at Canterbury Boys High. 6P and 6R enjoyed moving between different classrooms and getting a taste of some of the lessons they might have next year. These included Robotics, Maths, Geography and Drama. It looks like our wonderful Year 6 students are all grown up and ready to farewell us.

We had a fabulous night at the Year 6 Graduation Dinner on Monday 4th December. We are looking forward to the Year 6 Presentation Day on Tuesday 12th December and Year 6 Fun Day on Thursday 14th December.

Parents are required to explain the absences of their children from school promptly and within seven days to the school. An explanation for absence must be provided to the school within 7 days of the first day of any period of absence.

Principals will undertake all reasonable measures to contact parents promptly and within two school days of an absence being unexplained, if contact has not already been made. An absence is unexplained if parents have failed to provide an explanation to the school within 7 days.

Year 5 CampOn Wednesday 22nd November, Year 5 students had a very early morning. Many sleepy eyes but bursting with energy and excitement for their next few days at Berry Sport and Recreation Camp.

When we arrived at camp, students ate a delicious sausage sizzle and then were split into their three groups. The Wombats, Kangaroos and Water Dragons. Then off we went to begin our first of four activity rotations. Students all participated in kayaking, raft building, vertical wall challenges with belaying, archery, maze crawling and horizontal wall challenges. Our first night at camp included many fun games with team building and plenty of laughter. Teachers all had a ball joining in with the students and at one stage playing the part of the terminator.

On Thursday morning our wonderful Wombats were in charge of our food service and clean up duties. We then went off for another two activity rotations with some lunch and play time in-between. For dinner it was our keen Kangaroos who took reign on set up and clean up duties, so many responsible students. We then had a fabulous disco dance night with more games and fun. Many tired students after day two, which meant our teachers finally got a good night’s sleep.

On Friday morning our wondrous Water Dragons prepared breakfast and took care of all the scrumptious pancake and syrup mess. After our bellies were full we split up for our final activity with the instructors before we gathered for our last camp luncheon and boarded the buses back to school.

We all deserved a good rest after our three busy days at camp, but now that we’re all rested everyone is wishing to go back. What a fabulous highlight to our year!

SOCCER

Soccer is a sport played on a rectangular grass field. The dimensions are 50m x 100m. Each

team has 11 players unless someone gets a red card. There are different leagues for each country, Australia’s league is called the A-League. The most well-known league is the premier league. There are many great players like Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar and many more. We rate Soccer (Football) 10 out of 10 (in our opinion).

Robots

This is an extract from The robot race. What does automation mean for the future of jobs? Andrew Charlton and Jim Chalmers. The Monthly, November 2017. The article reflects on a future world where governments will have to deal with artificial

intelligence and automation as part of every occupation, from bricklayer to teacher. The articles puts forward that mindset change is needed, so that politicians, business and the community see robots, artificial intelligence and other technologies not as threat, but as a force for good.

Technologies like automation, artificial intelligence and robotics offer the opportunity to reimagine what it means to work. We should approach this task with a sense of optimism.

The banking example offers us a glimpse into the future – and the jobs we will likely do as technology becomes more capable. Relative to machines, humans still have a comparative advantage in occupations where personal service and human interactions are an important part of the job. This is obvious at the Martin Place ANZ branch where machines have come to dominate the simpler processing and information tasks on the ground floor, while humans have simply moved upstairs to perform more complex and interpersonal tasks. They are now working on the first floor, helping customers with financial products in specialist appointment rooms. The second floor functions as an open space for seminars and financial training.

For the individuals involved, none of this change is easy, but we have to ask ourselves: Would we want it any other way? If we could click our fingers and recover the tellers counting out notes by hand, would we do it? Or if we could recover the jobs of the comptometrists, who manually checked thousands of additions and subtractions, would we want them back? Would you go back even further and rehire the elevator operators who would have once stood on their feet for six, or eight, or ten hours per day, ferrying customers between floors? Would we want to put the Martin Place lamplighters, street sweepers, clock winders and traffic police back to work?

Technology ReportSelf-DrivingBuses

This week’s technology report is about self-driving buses. These new buses are completely the same as a normal bus. Except that it’s safer, smaller and most interesting, it drives people to their desired destination without actually anyone driving it. They use 360 degrees sensors and lasers to avoid hitting people and obstructions and are much safer than normal buses as they do not require a driver which gives the people in the bus a less chance of injury. These beauties are already in Perth and are spreading across the world!

My best friend is moving away to a new school and I really can’t stand it. I don’t know what to do because they’re moving far away and I don’t know if I will be able to contact them. I’m going to be very lonely and I’ve never separated from them. I really don’t know what to do, please help.

Sincerely Mr. Lost

Dear Mr. Lost,

I know it’s really hard to leave someone behind but sometimes you have to let it go. If you really can’t, maybe you can meet up on weekends, I know it may be a short time but it’s still precious time with your best friend. You can also contact them via social networking sites or if you’re not allowed you can use your parent’s phone number. You can also talk to another close friend to get all your emotions out. Either way you’re leaving them but you can still be friends. I hope you take this advice and don’t forget them.

Sincerely Danna

It’s the World Cup Final, and a man makes his way to his seat right next to the pitch. He sits down, noticing that

the seat next to him is empty. He leans over and asks his neighbour if someone will be sitting there. ‘No,’ says the neighbour. ‘The seat is empty.’ ‘This is incredible,’ said the man. ‘Who in their right mind would have a seat like this for the Final and not use it?’ The neighbour says, ‘Well actually the seat belongs to me. I was supposed to come with my wife, but she passed away. This is the first World Cup Final we haven’t been to together since we got married.’ ‘Oh, I’m so sorry to hear that. That’s terrible….But couldn’t you find someone else, a friend, relative or even a neighbour to take her seat?’ The man shakes his head. ‘No,’ he says. ‘They’re all at the funeral.
