Vorwort Foreword
Wohlmeinende Kunstfreunde tragen
Ideen an uns heran.
in Werkgruppen eingeteilt.

A proverb would have it that keeping things in good order is half of
what life is about. Especially for us artists! The flood of thousands of
images permeates our minds during daydreams and before we fall
asleep. Collections of ideas bring relief. With each new project, a mul-
tiplicity of solutions and opportunities to take things further emerges.
Well-meaning art friends offer us ideas. A large part of our work is to
distinguish the good ideas from the less viable ones and to pursue
the right one consistently. Where parallel solutions of equal quality are
possible, we simply regret that no one can simple double themselves
up.
To give this catalog the right order, I have divided the different pie-
ces, most of which arose over the last four years, into work groups.
Needless to say, these interrelate and there is also overlap, but this
strategy provides a good overview and a new sense of how things
could cotninue!

NOI–TAT–IDEM
meiner Kollegen sehr interessant – einige Betrachter weniger.
A particular focus in this group of works, with its Latin-sounding tit-
le, was a flag also flown by Concrete Art, namely the thematization
of perception. For me it was a matter of rendering phenomena of
perception within an artwork discernible for the beholder. This is an
educational approach that young people may deem ‘unsexy‘, unless
it becomes inevitable, as it does here. For how can you illustrate phe-
nomena of perception more effectively than by doing so where it does
not function properly?
As is the case in many non-figurative works, the experiences that we
would have otherwise made with representational images do not oc-
cur, for these pictures from the world of objects have led us to be-
come accustomed to the notion that image and object are more or
less congruent. As those who simply quickly leaf through the catalog
will surely miss, this does not, however, apply to the works in the NOI-
TAT-IDEM series in that the two similar images positioned adjacent to
each other are in fact one and the same work. One of them is the ‘right‘
way round, and the other the ‘wrong‘ way round, having been rotated
180°. Here an effect that can be created by simply dismounting and
rotating the works in the exhibition, and one that never fails to invoke
great astonishment and amusing remarks, is openly perceptible, but
unfortunately it all too often goes unnoticed. The arrangement of the
folds transforms light into an artistic medium, creating two works in
one.
Standing before a NOI-TAT-IDEM work in real life, the following ques-
tion often springs to mind: Why can’t I see the work very clearly even
though it has clear edges? Well, I have asked myself the same thing! In
literature on the works there isn’t a single author who describes such
a phenomenon. But before I lend this effect my name, I’d rather wait
and see if anyone does indeed come forward.
At least the jury adjudicating the Messmer Foundation’s 2010 André-
Evard Art Award thought “NOI-TAT-IDEM” a worthy nominee. Just a
few years old, this award is little known outside professional circles,
though this is not the case among artists. When I took part, my entry
was one of 600 sent from 33 countries.
Some of my colleagues and I find this whole perception confusion
thing rather interesting – others less so. Allowing only the usual re-
ception time (30 to 75 seconds per work) and failing to be completely
open to the work can result in some dizziness. Those who are always
interested in optical phenomena and visual experiences tend to take
a longer look and speak of a curious kind of relaxation that sets in
as soon as you give up trying to achieve the impossible – namely, to
capture a clear, sharp glimpse of the work. For this reason, if for no
other, this exhibition is definetly worth a visit. After all, you can see a
NOI-TAT-IDEM there!

BEzOLD-TäUSCHUNG THE BEzOLD DECEPTION
Jetzt in
18
The assimilation effect, named after the man who discovered it, Wil-
helm von Bezold, is one of the lesser none peculiarities of human
color processing in the neural cortex and is diametrically opposed
to the better-known simultaneous contrast. Whereas the latter effect
displays a virtual intensification of a color’s saturation, meaning a pale
red pane appears redder against a green background than against a
gray one, colors behave differently with the former. Placing stripes of
colors adjacent to one another brings about a so-called lateral inhi-
bition of the photoreceptors, such that a green stripe intersecting an
orange-red plane appears warmer than the same stripe intersecting a
turquoise plane (see accompanying illustration). The photoreceptors
are inhibited, or rather influenced by the adjacent ‘information‘ provi-
ded by the adjacentcolor. In this case, green on red becomes redder
rather than greener.
It certainly is a fascinating effect to work with as an artist. In the 1990s
the advertising industry discovered and exploited the formal potential
it offered, one of non-figurative art’s most basic tools. There was hard-
ly a single studio broadcast on TV or an advertisement in a magazine
that didn’t use stripes to this effect. The fact that the obvious percep-
tive function of the Bezold effect went completely unnoticed shows
that here the advertising industry was interested solely in quickly
using available forms found in art.
During this time it was simply impossible for an artist to work with
stripes. I have been working with stripes since my days as a student.
In my opinion, now in the 2010s it is possible for artists to do this once
again if it is of particular importance to them.
What I find particularly fascinating is the question of which widths,
colors and intensities the two phenomena neutralize each other or
switch over into their opposites.

JUPITER / SIRIUS
setzen.
sen.
If one developed the Bezold illusion further, one almost inevitably
lands with an optical color mixture! The shape of the pieces in the
SIRIUS work group allows stripes to be placed ever more closely to-
gether. Where the stripe are narrower surprising color mixtures arise.
The neighboring photoreceptors are laterally inhibited wherever the
color surfaces become so narrow that the neighboring colors no lon-
ger allow uninhibited perception.
An unreflecting sense of reality which assumes that everything that
we see is also what it is realizes, on encountering and absorbing such
phenomenon, just how wrong it is. We need to understand that what
we perceive as color, and a very intense impression it can be, is ac-
tually only a correlation we make between a certain lengths of light
waves and an interpretation or view that we charge with emotion.
Indeed, this is a privilege that only we humans and the New World
monkeys have, which only goes to show that perception is per se a
species-specific interpretation. If color as such is a human phenome-
non, then a field of inquiry opens up in which we are ourselves the
laboratory.

MSE
The pieces in the MSE series bring together various elements from
other work groups. Here we encounter the Bezold illusion, optical co-
lor mixtures and reverse perspective.
I am constantly advancing this form of relief in line with experiences in
how we perceive space, light, shadow and color.
“MSE VIII”, for example, uses only three colors: the ocher in the middle,
the pink on the vertical outermost sections, that abuts with the inner
edges of the ocher and has a stripe of strong may green that arises in
the optical mixture of the same ocher tone as is consistently used to
cover the middle section.
This combination of pink and ocher relates to a family theme in terms
of color psychology.
In the case of “MSE IX”, that feature sonly a strong medium green and
a purple tone, the vertical zones mix where the two colors meet each
other in stripes, and merge from a certain distance into grey. That also
happens with the illustration in the catalog.
Purple and green comprise 180 degrees of the chromatic circle and in
terms of color psychology, where they are combined out of inner urge,
allude to an imaginary image of the world.

PERSPEKTIVISCHE UMKEHR REVERSE PERSPECTIVE
leben, was dabei passiert.
In the catalog accompanying the “relief reductive” exhibition, Chris-
tian Janecke outlines just how much the genre of the relief borders
on deception and illusion. This form of unsettling perception and thus
causing the viewers to think about themselves is most pronounced in
the case of REVERSE PERSPECTIVE.
You can actually only yourself experience with a sculpture or through
an animation what actually happens. Anyone swiftly brushing past the
works in of this sort, and sadly this often happens, will think they are
walking backwards, and some of them will feel dizzy, as with the pie-
ces in the work group “NOI-TAT-IDEM”. It requires a change in how you
see things if you are to work out how the pieces function.
And that’s just the beginning. The use of color and the shape also play
a part.
