MATERIALS

• 8 ½ X 11 or 9 X 12 parchment paper• Pencil and eraser• Ruler• Extra fine point black Sharpie• Watercolor pencils, small paintbrushes, and

water dish• Tag board scraps and scissors• Fine point metallic markers, fine point colored

Sharpies, gel pens, regular colored pencils

STEP ONE: Fill out the Imaginary Island description sheet

TIP: Start by choosing a theme for the island, then brainstorming a list of things associated with the theme.

STEP 2: Draw a border on all four sides of the parchment paper. Tip: Use the width of the ruler as the width of the border to avoid having to measure.

STEP 3: Sketch in the shape of the island. Start by lightly drawing the actual contours of the object, then redraw the outline to mimic the variations in the shoreline of an actual island.

STEP 4: Choose an icon to represent the location of the cities on the island.

STEP 5: Draw the topographical features of the island.

STEP 6: Outline the drawing with an extra fine point black Sharpie, then erase any visible pencil lines.

STEP 7: Using the Imaginary Island description sheet, HAVE EACH STUDENT FILL OUT A SPELLCHECK PAPER and SHOW TO YOU FOR CORRECTIONS. Carefully print the names of the cities and topographical features in pencil, then outline with extra fine point Sharpie. Write the name of the island in pencil somewhere on the map in larger decorative lettering, then outline in extra fine point Sharpie. Erase any visible pencil lines.

STEP 8: Draw a complimentary border design in pencil. A template can be created from a scrap of tag board for shapes that are to be repeated.

STEP 9: Outline the border design in extra fine point Sharpie. Erase any visible pencil lines.

STEP 10: COLORING THE MAP

• Use watercolor pencils to color the map• Emphasize color blending and shading• Be careful not to overblend the colors

when adding water• When the map is completely dry,

emphasis can be given to details by overcoloring with colored Sharpie markers, metallic markers, gel pens and/or regular colored pencils
