Petrochemical installations take care of the mobility of the human race, and manufacture intermediate products for plastics which are now an essential part of our daily lives. So much more important is a reliable and continuous supply of our economy, as production shortages would have incalcu-lable consequences and would bring our economic system to a grinding halt in a matter of days.

So much higher are the demands made of plant engineering. Extensive specifications and deman-ding standards such as the API are there to shape this extremely sensitive area in a safe and reliable manner.

The capacity and type of production processes in a refinery are largely decided on composition of the crude

oil to be processed and the requirements of the target markets.Complex refineries with many conversion plants can manuf-acture finished products from all types of crude oil.

Piller fans are used in all the essential processes in an oil refinery:■ crude oil distillation■ vacuum distillation■ hydrodesulphurisation■ gas post-processing■ sulphur recovery■ reformers (platformers)■ isomerising and

Added to these, there are also processes for the production of process materials such as process steam, electricity and cooling water.

In many of these process en-gineering plants, special fans have to overcome system resistance to transport large quantities of gas of various compositions depending on the throughput.

Especially in the processes in a refinery for refining the crude oil which are characterised by high energy consumption, such as distillation of the crude oil, endothermic processes like platformers and crackers as well as in power stations the Piller Industrieventilatoren GmbH contributes with opti-mum efficiency levels to eco-nomical methods of working.

Platforming:

Today, state-of-the-art is repre-sented by CCR platformers, in which the catalyst is continu-ally regenerated. Here for the production of modern petrole-um fuels there are purification processes used under licence from UOP Inc. in Illinois, USA. The designation “petroleum fuels” covers normal, super and super-plus petrols. These differ in quality according to their anti-knock properties. Because of the high quality demands of petroleum fuels, they are generally manufac-tured of so-called “improved” components, obtained from the primary crude oil fractions by chemical conversion pro-cesses. Produced in the platformer, one important component is for example the platformate, which contains a high propor-tion of aromatic hydrocarbons, and thus has a high level of resistance to pre-ignition.

Long production runs

In order to avoid interruptions in production, UOP has deve-loped a process which makes possible the continuous rege-neration of the catalyst. The Piller Regeneration Blo-wer, Regeneration Cooler Blower and Fines Removal Blower ensure the functio-ning of this process (CCR plat-

forming in OLEFLEX C, CYC-LAR TM and MTBE production) in refineries all over the world, and indeed were developed for this specific purpose.

For the regeneration blower in this process, materials such as Inconel 600/617, Incoloy 800H or AISI 316 are used. Continuous operational tem-peratures of up to 600 °C, operating pressures of 4 bar (gauge) and uninterrupted running times of 3 years repre-sent the norm here. The special design of the Piller

Regeneration Blower permits in the case of necessity the exchange of all revolving parts (spare-plug design) in very few hours, without having to in-terrupt the production process for the purpose.

Bearing engineering

Long-life shaft seals with low levels of seal-gas consumption help to keep operating costs down and the oil-lubricated bearings can be equipped with oil-feed systems, oil-spray

lubrication or oil-trough systems as preferred. Here, the standard service life of the bearings is reckoned as 100,000 h. Special hot gas impellers have been working trouble-free for over 25 years. By carrying out numerous quality controls and trial running at operating tempe-ratures on a purpose-built hot gas test-bench, we can gua-rantee our customers optimum levels of reliability. Well over 100 refineries across the world have been relying for many years past on Piller fans.

Maintenance, ServiceTogether with a microproces-sor-controlled remote monito-ring system developed by Piller, the option is also available to have all important machine parameters monitored 24 hours a day by specialists at our offices at very reasonable rates.

This makes possible preventive maintenance which can avoid unexpected failure of the fan, so often a key component of the whole plant, and thus expensive interruptions in the production process.

New materialsIn the sulphur-recovery (Claus- plant) regeneration gases which contain sulphur have to be transported. For this pur-pose, there are specially-desig-ned Piller fans used, which have a so-called steam-jacket housing to avoid the tempe-rature falling below the acid condensation point.

Not even the transport of moist chlorine gas, roaster gas etc. present the specially-designed Piller fans with problems.
