OUR LATIN THINGAugust 26th, 1971, New York gives birth to a sound that would change the face of Latin Music forever. That evening at the reknown Cheetah Night-club, Jerry Massucci, president of the legendary label FANIA, presented an ensemble of its best artists- THE FANIA ALL-STARS. The show was billed as “Our Latin Thing”. In the decades ahead the FANIA ALL-STARS would become the ambassadors and jugger-nauts of Latin Music around the world. They became the musical reflection of the times, needs, and struggles of New York’s Latino community. Their music was “Salsa Gorda”, influenced by American Jazz, Soul, and Rock and Roll. Their music became part of Ameri-cana.

EL CANTANTEThis is the t-shirt that Hector Lavoe used to wear for his shows. Hector Lavoe, El cantante de los cantantes, The King Of Improvisation, Lavoe was the greatest salsa singer of all time. He was the best sonero (freestyling verses the way rap-pers do nowadays) that there ever was. He was a true art-ist o the people and an icon to us all.

SIEMBRAThe t-shirt that represents the way people comes together. A compositional and poetic mas-terpiece, Rubén Blades’ and Willie Colón’s “Siembra” set new artistic and commercial heights, not merely in salsa, but in all types of music. “Siem-bra” ranks along with The Beatles’Seargent. Pepper’s, Marvin Gaye’s What’s Goin’ On and Eddie Palmieri’s Jus-ticia in its innovative artistry, brilliant musicality and momen-tous social and political com-mentary. This album launched Blades and Colón’s careers internationally.

THE BIG BREAKOf the many brilliant LP covers from Fania records, “The Big Break” may be the most notori-ous one. The idea was a cover that replicated a Wanted by the FBI poster. Only that the FBI in question was the Freaks of Bureau Investigation, Colón was armed with a trombone and was wanted for killing people... with his exciting rhythm. Using the project’s lim-ited budget to his advantage, the designer included a cheap photo of Colón and random fingerprints to create a realistic looking poster.

NYC SALSANYC SALSA is the incendi-ary sound of Latin New York and that’s what you would be wearing here. In 1970, Latin music in the USA was a cross-roads. It was on the verge on breaking out of the barrios of New York and into the wider American musical mainstream, and then on to conquer the rest of the world! Latin music was about to transform itself into “Salsa”,. This marketing makeover would unite all the different strands of Cuban, Puerto Rico, Colombian, Ven-ezuela and Dominican dance music under one banner. Lati-nos Unidos!
