2 v 20th Anniversary Season

A special message from Nancy’s artistby Robin Preiss Glasser, illustrator of the Fancy Nancy book series

“Who is Fancy Nancy based on?” is the first question everyone asks Jane O’Connor, the author of the Fancy Nancy books, and me.Jane tells this story: When she was a little girl, her grandma and aunts would come for Sunday dinner, and Jane would teeter out to greet them in her mom’s high heels, tutu, and long red cape. She says, “Dressing up made me feel grown up, important, noticed. I was no longer little Janie, I was a glamorous hostess!” Although she grew up to be an understated (which is fancy for plain) adult, Nancy is based on her as a child. Here’s my story: When I received the manuscript for the first Fancy Nancy book, I saw that Jane had written some directions in the margin of the first page: “Illustrator to draw bedroom with canopy bed handmade from a mop, broom, and sheet.” This note made me realize immediately that Nancy wasn’t a fancy princess-y girl, but sort of a young Martha Stewart -- a DIY child, like I had been! When I was a child my favorite doll was a hot pink-haired troll for whom I made a sparkly tutu and a troll mansion out of shoe boxes. Nancy was DIY me! So I based the look of the character on my favorite doll, and if you ask my husband, he’ll tell you, like Nancy, I am a drama queen too!Once that first book came out, Jane and I went on a national tour together, and little girls came to our book signings wearing boas, tiaras, tutus, butterfly wings, and every other manner of dress-up clothes. Jane and I were amazed to find that there was a bit of Fancy Nancy in a whole lot of other girls, too!In the past fourteen years we have created over 80 books, plus dolls and toys, and now we’ve passed the torch to Disney Junior, who debuted an animated Fancy Nancy TV series in July.Meanwhile, Vital Theater, in New York, created the enchanting musical you will see today that ran for many years off Broadway and had an extensive national tour. We never imagined that Nancy would come alive to sing and dance her way into our hearts across a live stage! This show brings my husband, Robert Berman (the Executive Producer of this show) and me full circle. Both of us have always been “stage people.” When we discovered Chance Theater, we experienced the youthful passion and talent here that is palpable. It is the integration of so many of our pleasures to be able to bring, with the Chance, Fancy Nancy to our town. One of my earliest memories is going to see a children’s theater group with my three sisters in Poughkeepsie, New York, where we grew up. At each show, an elf-like hostess named Pockets would prepare us for the stories we were going to watch by pulling pertinent items from the many pockets on the front of her costume. Sometimes, by mistake, she would pull out a rubber chicken! It was fun and it was magical. This was the beginning of my enchantment with live theater. We hope you and your children feel the magic and impact of live theater today and enjoy this splendiferous (that’s a fancy word for wonderful) production along with us.

James received his B.A. in Theater Arts Performance from CSU Long Beach, and has studied with the Michael Chekhov Association and The Actor’s Center (NYC). James also works as a director and teaching artist. His recent directing credits include the World Premiere of Comedy of ERRORS (ACTC), and The Eight: Reindeer Monologues (Chance Theater).

He has taught and directed for local middle-schools, Musical Theater Playground, and for Chance Theater’s Speak Up youth program.

Karen O’Hanlon (Education Director) is delighted to be a Chance Resident Artist and Artistic Council Member. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Theater from East Stroudsburg University. As the Education Director,

she is incredibly proud of the Chance Theater’s Youth and Teen programs that focus on building confident leaders, and the groundbreaking Speak Up program that uses theater arts to empower participants to find their voice through creative expression while building empathy. Through community support, the Speak Up program has grown into three branches: serving teens, serving veterans, and our new program, Spectrum ‘Speak Up’, serving kids with developmental disorders. Additional career highlights include writing and directing A Celtic Holiday with Craic in the Stone (Best Special Event by Examiner.com), working as a debate coach with the Orange County Debate League, and teaching Theater and Debate at Fairmont Private Schools. She has previously appeared on the Chance Stage in the SoCal Premier of Middletown, The Laramie Project & Laramie Project: 10 Years Later (LA Stage Times’ Top Ten of 2013), Passion Play (Orange County Premier), Rare Birds (OTR Workshop), and The Eight: Reindeer Monologues.

Darryl B. Hovis (TYA Producing Associate) earned his M.A. in Theatre Production at Central Washington University and studied acting at the Professional Conservatory at UCSD under Anna Shapiro (Steppenwolf)

as well as South Coast Repertory under Karen Hensel. He is the co-founder and artistic director of the Culver City Academy of Visual and Performing Arts, where he developed an intensive arts program for high school students in theatre, film, music, and art, and has gone on to develop theatre programs at other Southern California high schools, as well as Theatre International at Leysin American School in Leysin, Switzerland. TYA productions include Alice in Wonderland, The Legend(s) of Sleepy Hollow, and The Boy at the Edge of Everything. Other favorites include Therese Raquin (Chance Theater), Rent and The Threepenny Opera (Samohi Theatre), Machinal and Resurrecting Antigone (UniTheatre), and The Miracle Worker and Treehouses (AVPA).

Sarah DuVal (House Manager) came to the Chance for the first time ten years ago to see I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change. Two years later, she became a Chance Member and started to help build sets and

hang stage lights, which continued into 2014 when the Chance opened their current space. Ten years later, Sarah has now become the House Manager and a Fellow at the Chance. Previous experience includes working in the ticketing department at SCFTA and working in the Chance office.

Marc Sanford (Associate House Manager) is very happy to be a Chance Theater Resident Artist and Associate House Manager. In 1994, Marc did a production of Little Shop of Horrors at Rancho Santiago

College (now known as Santa Ana College), where he met future Chance founders Oanh Nguyen and Jeff Hellebrand. Marc first performed at the Chance in A History of the American Film as Mickey (plus 4 other characters) and soon became a resident artist. In 2004, Marc had to drop out of the company due to the discovery of a tumor about the size of a ping-pong ball on his optic nerve. His surgery was successful, but he moved up to the Seattle area to stay with family to recuperate. While he was up there, he attended the Seattle Film Institute where he received a Filmmaking Certificate. Marc has been a resident artist since June 2008.

Chance Theater is proud to be one of the leading ensemble-driven theater companies in Southern California. Recently, we’ve received a National Theatre Company grant from American Theatre Wing, won six Ovation Awards, including two for Best Production of a Musical – Intimate Theater for our West Coast premiere of Triassic Parq – The Musical and Southern California premiere of Jerry Springer – The Opera, as well as four LADCC Awards, including the Polly Warfield Award for Outstanding Season. The Anaheim City Council named Chance Theater “the official resident theater company of Anaheim,” and Arts Orange County has twice named the Chance as “Outstanding Arts Organization.” Known for using bold and personal storytelling to promote dialogue and connection within the Southern California theatrical landscape, the Chance is committed to contributing to a more compassionate, connected and creative community. As a constituent member of Theatre Communications Group, Network of Ensemble Theaters, and the LA Stage Alliance, Chance Theater continues to bring national attention to the Southern California and Orange County theater scenes.
