New building materials and construction methods are eectively resulting in waterproo buildings. They trapmoisture inside just as eectively as they keep moisture out.

Open doors and windows provide air circulation and ventilation but security considerations mean that we areincreasingly less likely to use this option. Houses tend to remain closed up more and more.

Poor ventilation results in a consistent buildup o moisture generated by cooking/bathing-showering/clotheswashing-drying/LPG gas heating/etc.

    Why you need Ventilation?

    Ventilation Selection

Trapping Moist Air Inside = Unhealthy Home

    Problems Caused by Poor Ventilation

Stale air can be caused by cooking smells, odours remaining in the bathroom, a general lack o ventilationaround the house as well as a damp atmosphere.

All these problems cause an avoidable level o discomort as well as the risk o respiratory illness and generalpoor health.

Problems also occur when steam rom the kitchen or bathroom inds cooler suraces around the house on whichto condense. Warm, moisture-laden air condenses on cold suraces such as glass, cold ceilings and cold wet-wall linings. This is the moisture that you can see.

Moisture you cannot see is still present in the atmosphere and will be absorbed into abrics, wall linings, bedding, etc. Attempts to conserve heat by sealing windows - and thereore reducing natural ventilation - makesthis problem even worse.

Condensation can cause considerable problems rom peeling wallpaper and mould growth to severe long termstructural damage to building materials.

    Moisture Generators:

    KitchenToiletBathroom Showering Gas HeatingCondensation Laundry

    Ventilate Outside = Healthy Home

In dwellings with a metal roo, or where the roo is lined with sarking, ventilatingdirectly into the roo space is not permitted under the Building Code.

    Ventilation Selection

    Fan Placement

Careul location o an extraction an will ensuremaximum air-low through the room. Air extracted roma bathroom, or example, can be replaced with dry airdrawn rom an adjacent bedroom or hallway, in turn, drawn rom an open window or door. This ensuresthat resh air is being drawn into the entire house at

regular periods. Switching the an on beore starting showering or

cooking sets up eective air-lows beore the associatedcondensation problems occur. Closing doors to adjacentliving areas assists in stopping the transer o moistureto those areas but ensure that suicient air can enterunder the door to replace extracted air.

Use a door vent i necessary.

For a an to remove air eectively, the same amount oair being extracted must be able to enter the room. e.g.

    air in = air out.

An air-tight room will mean no air movement. I the room istightly sealed (e.g. a tight-itting door, with no gap at the bottom),

you may need to it a through-door grille (see duct accessories)to allow replacement air into the room.

    MEDIUM CIRCULATION

    BEST CIRCULATION

    Your Ventilation Solutions

    POOR CIRCULATION

It is best to remove moisture rom where it is generatedto outside the house beore it has a chance to spread to

other parts o the house. Use ducted ans, through-wallans or window ans at all times. Do NOT use ceilingans which discharge into the ceiling cavity - this onlymoves the problem. Moisture will permeate insulationand ceiling linings causing urther problems.

In particular with bathrooms think in terms o room-conditioning. Warm, moist air is immediately attractedto cold suraces, where it condenses into water droplets.Cold suraces include glass, mirrors, tiles, wet-walllinings, cold un-insulated ceiling linings, etc. You cannotremove all o this air at a rate ast enough to stop this

happening and i you could, you would be standing in awind tunnel. Use o a bathroom heater to warm the roomprior to use greatly assists in reducing condensation.

Australian Building Code Paragraph 3.8.5.0 states:

Perormance requirement P2.4.5 is satisied or mechanicalventilation system i it is installed in accordance with AS1668.2. Mechanical ventilation or acceptable indoor airquality, except that any contaminated air rom a sanitarycompartment or bathroom must:

    (a) Exhaust directly to outside the building by way o

    ducts; or

    (b) Exhaust into the roo space provided:

    i. It is adequately ventilated by open eaves, and/or roovents; or

ii. The roo is clad in rooing tiles without sarking

or similar materials, which would prevent venting

    through gaps between tiles.

As detailed above, in dwellings with a metal roo, orwhere the roo is lined with sarking, ventilating directlyin to the roo space is not permitted by building codesunless the roo space is adequately ventilated by openeaves or roo vents.

The Manrose range oers many ducted solutions toexhaust to the outside through wall, roo or eaves tocomply with the latest building code. Natural Ventilationor the above is acceptable as long as opening windowsin each room have an area o 5% or more o the loorarea o the room.

    Calculating Fan Perormance

To convert rom one to other types omeasurement:

    I you know Litres/Second (l/s):l/s x 3.6 = m/hr.

    (e.g. 25 l/s x 3.6 = 90m/hr)

    I you know Cubic Metres/Hour (m/hr):m/hr 3.6 = l/s(e.g. 200m/hr 3.6 = 55.55 l/s)

    4. Working out the right an or the job

    1. Calculate the room volume in metres (L x W x H)2. Multiply the room volume by the recommended air

changes per hour or that room. Always use thehigher limit.

    3. The result is the total perormance required in cubicmetres per hour.

Select a an with a higher perormance than this igure.

    For Example:

What is the best an or a bathroom that is 2.8m long

    by 2.8m wide with a ceiling height o 2.4m?

    1. Calculate the volume o the bathroom:2.8 x 2.8 x 2.4 = 18.8m3

2 11-15 air changes per hour are recommended or abathroom. Multiply the room volume by 15:18.8m3 x 15 = 282m/hr

    3. The an to choose or this bathroom would be a anthat perorms at greater than 282m/hr. A an that hasa perormance level o 313m/hr or higher (eg. XP150, orSF150) would do this job

Compare Centriugal Against Axial Fan Perormance:

    1. SF100 (axial) vs an SF200 (centriugal) anThe starting point is the ree air perormance o23l/s or the axial and 31l/s or the centriugal. Asduct is added to each o these ans, this increasesthe pressure (Pa) and decreases volume o airmoved. From the below example you can see that at20Pa o pressure the 100mm axial an airlow hasstopped whereas the 100mm centriugal an is stillmoving 29l/s!

    Simple acts:

    1. Fan size (i.e diameter o impeller & outlet)

    2. Duct and the way it is installed

Smaller duct = greater resistance to airlow.

More bends = greater resistance to airlow.

Longer duct runs = increasingly reduced airlow.

Wrinkled ducting causes turbulence and reducesairlow

Smoother, extended ducting allows smooth, increasedairlow
