About Florida A&M UniversityFlorida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) is an 1890 land-grant institution dedicated to the advancement of knowledge, resolution of complex issues and the empowerment of citizens and communi-ties. The University provides a student-centered environment consistent with its core values. The faculty is committed to educating students at the undergraduate, graduate, doctoral and professional levels, preparing graduates to apply their knowledge, critical thinking skills and creativity in their service to society. FAMU’s distinction as a doctoral/research institution will continue to provide mechanisms to address emerging issues through local and global partnerships. Expanding upon the University’s land-grant status, it will enhance the lives of constituents through innovative research, engaging cooperative extension, and public service. While the University continues its historic mission of educating African Americans, FAMU embraces per-sons of all races, ethnic origins and nationalities as life-long members of the university community.

On October 7, 2011, a tribute to the Incomparable Marching “100” Band will commence Florida A&M Uni-versity’s 125th Anniversary. As we kickoff a year-long celebration, special commemoration in honor of the legendary founder of the Marching “100” Dr. William Patrick Foster will highlight the 2011 Homecoming Week.

Dr. William Patrick Foster, founder and creator of the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University Marching “100” and the symphonic bands. In his quest to become a music conductor, bandmaster and composer, Dr. Foster studied at the Kansas City Conservatory, University of Kansas, Wayne State University, and Columbia University Teachers College. Dr. Foster was the past president of the Florida Music Educators Association, the College Band Directors National Association, and the American Bandmasters Association; past director of the McDonald’s All-American High School Band; and past member of the National Endowment of the Arts. He was also designated as a Great Floridian by the state of Florida.

His ground breaking leadership of the Marching “100” has given the band worldwide recognition, television appearances and national awards for their 360

steps per minute marching cadence, memorized music, dance routines and field animation formations. Dr. Foster will forever be known by his many titles, which included: “the Dean of America’s Band Directors,” “the Maestro,” “the Law” and “the Man Behind the Baton.” His creation of the Marching “100” Band, which manifested into an organization consisting of more than 400 members, was truly remarkable. His extraordinary leadership and 52 years of service to this great institution has shaped collegiate marching bands throughout this nation.

The mission of the Department of Music is to provide the highest quality of education at the undergraduate level for music majors embarking on careers as teachers, scholars, performers and composers. It is also the mission of the department to teach non-majors and members of the community about music as a part of human culture and experience.

The emergence of the Marching “100” created a protocol for halftime, while the longevity of their reign atop the list as the band of choice for major events has made them legendary. The bands legacy continued with the change of guards from Dr. Foster, to current band director, Dr. Julian E. White.

A testament to the Marching “100’s” stature can be measured by the bands continuous national exposure. Within the span of two weeks in November of 2009, the Marching “100” was spotlighted by the media’s industry leaders. It began with a live performance on ESPN’s College Game Day during the two-hour live broadcast.

Three days later, the band was featured in a segment for the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric that aired on Thanksgiving Day. Simultaneously, Sports Illustrated Magazine was entrenched in the band producing a magazine feature while the Marching “100” amazed audiences at the Florida Classic “Battle of the Bands,” and at the Florida Classic football game which was broadcasted on the ESPN network of stations.

Under Dr. White’s baton, the Marching “100” has had numerous Super Bowl appearances. The most notable was the Super Bowl XL halftime performance with the artist formerly known as Prince.

Senator Barack Obama, requested that the Marching “100” accompany him in a Central Florida campaign stop. Once elected to the historic presidency, President Barack Obama invited the Marching “100” to appear in his inaugural parade. This famous band appeared at the Grammy’s in 2006 with Grammy-Award-winners Kanye West and Jamie Foxx, and was viewed by a nationally televised audience.

Dr. White continues to place the band in the national spotlight with the innovative formations and drills that he develops. The Marching “100” will continue to be the band of choice for the twenty-first century.
