CHAPTERONE
Textiles
Ifyouwanttoseemegetalittleskipinmystep,justthrowabunchofvintagefeedsacks,dishtowels,fabricremnants,laceandtrimsintoabasketandtossitonatable.WhenIspotabasketlikethisatafleamarket,Icannotgettherefastenough.Itissofundiggingthroughallthesegoodies.Itellyou,it’sthethrillofthehuntthatgetsmeeverytime,andIcomebyithonestlybecausemymomanddadlovethehuntasmuchasIdo.Justremember:Itcanbewashed;stainsareOKandcreateadistressedfeel;andtatteredandtornisgood.Butmostimportantly—ifyoulikeit,buyit.Thischapterisfilledwithcreativewaystouseallthosetextilefindsyoucomeuponduringyourshoppingadventures.Youwillassembleatextilecharmusingremnantpiecesofcanvasandlaceandadornedwithabasicneedle-feltedaccent,andyouwillcreateauniquedollusingasewingpatternforherskirtthatisaccentedbeautifullywithtrimandseambinding.
Bird’sNest
ThiscollagehighlightsmeaningfulitemsfromaplaceIlovetovisit.Forthepastseveralsummers,I’vedrivenwithmyparentstoWestVirginiatovisitfamilyandtheoldhomestead.Thishomesteadwasplacedinitsspotin1900,soIusedapostcardandsheetmusicfromthateraformybackground.Thewallpaperispiecesofthehome’sactualwallpaper,whichMomandIcarefullypeeledaway.Thebuttonsandchenillebedspreadnestrepresentitemsfoundintheattic.The
ladlesymbolizesallthewonderfulmealsmygreat-great-auntscookedonawoodstove.
WhatYou’llNeedLadle,chenillefabric,crochettrim,yarn,embroideryfloss,beadsforeggs,daisytrim,buttons,fabricleaf,smallchandelierbeads,hotgluesticks,hotgluegun,sewingneedle,scissors
STEP1Usingscissors,cutpiecesofachenillebedspreadorfabric,yarnandcrochettrimto1”x12”(3cmx30cm).Holdallthreepiecestogetherandtieaknotatoneend.
STEP2Startingattheknottedend,twistthetextilestogethertoformanestshape.Usingahotgluegun,applysmalldotsofhotgluetothetopofthetextilesstripbeforeyoulayerthenexttwistedrow.Thiswillhelpkeepthenest’sshapeasitgetslarger.Addadditionaldotsofglueasneeded,oneortwoperrow.Gluetheendsofthefabrictothenesttosecure.
STEP3Wrapabitofyarnaroundthenest,workingbottomtotop,toaddbodyandvisualinterest,gluingbothendsoftheyarninplace.
STEP4Usingasewingneedleorhotgluegun,attachthreebeadstothecenterofthenestforeggs.
STEP5Tocompletethenest,addvintagebuttons,smallfeltleavesandflowertrim.Youcaneithersewthemonorattachthemwithhotglue.Foradditionaltexture,attachthesmallchandelierbeadswithembroideryfloss.Doubleknottheflossendsandleavethestringshanging.
STEP6Adherethenesttothebowloftheladlewithhotglue.Tofinishthisproject,hotglueanoldearring,additionalleavesandaseam
bindingbowtothehandleoftheladle.Covera7”x9”(18cmx23cm)canvaswithpatternedpapers.AdheretheDresdentrimtothetopandbottomedges.Hotgluetheladletothecanvas,thencontinuetoembellishthecanvaswithbuttons,beadsandgametiles.Youcansewthebeadstothevelvetribbon,ifyoulike,butattachtherestoftheitemswithhotglue.
FeltedHeart
Iwantedthebackgroundforthispiecetobeprettymuchallcreamcoloredsothemainfocuswouldfallonthefeltedheart.Differenttextiles,suchaslace,woolfeltanddoilies,insimilarcolorshelpcreatealovelymonochromatictheme.Addingcreampearlsandvintagebuttonsforaccentsprovidesdimensionandtexture.Thehandstitchingintheheartandontheotheraccentitemstiesthewholepiecetogether.
WhatYou’llNeed
Zipper,woolfelt,woolrovingintwocolors,embroideryfloss,beads,pencil,embroideryneedle,needle-feltingpen,brushneedle-feltingpad,scissors
STEP1Trimthefabricpartofyourzipperasclosetothezipperteethasyoucanwithscissors.
STEP2Withapencil,lightlydrawtheshapeofyourheartontocreamfelt,addingsomecirclestoaccentwithasecondcolorofwoolroving.
STEP3Usinganembroideryneedlethreadedwithcreamembroideryfloss,beginsewingthezippertrimontothepencillines.Stitchinanup-and-over
motion,sewingbetweeneachtoothofthezipper.
STEP4Placeyourfeltpieceontoabrush-styleneedle-feltingpad.Pulloffapieceofcreamwoolroving;donotcuttheroving.Whenpullingoffpiecesofroving,holdtherovingatoneendwithonehandandgentlypulltherovingwiththeotherhandfromtheoppositeend.Itwillpullapartlikecottoncandy.
STEP5Placetherovingintheheart.Usingapen-styleneedle-feltingtool,presstheneedlesintothewoolroving.Thebarbsontheneedlewillattachthewoolrovingtothefeltandcompacttheroving.Continueuntilthewoolrovingfillstheheartshapeuptotheedgeofthezipperteeth.
STEP6Accentthecircleswiththesecondcolorofroving.
STEP7Useembroideryflosstohandstitchareaswithsimplestraightstitches.
STEP8Addricegrainstitches.Tocreatethisstitch,sewasinglebasicstraightstitchatanyangle,andcontinuecreatingsinglestraightstitchesofsimilarsizerandomlyatdifferentanglesuntiltheareaisfilled.Whenfinished,therice
stitchesshouldresemblethatofspilledrice,withthericepiecesgoinginalldifferentdirections.
STEP9Handstitchsmallbeadsinsidetheheartforadditionalaccents.
STEP10Carefullycutthefeltasclosetothezipperteethaspossible,makingsurenottocutanyofthestitching.Tofinishthisproject,wrapa5”x5”(13cmx13cm)canvaswithfelt,and
gluethefelttothebackofthecanvas.Adherelaceoverthefeltbysewingorwithfabricadhesive.Placeasecondlayeroflaceoverthefirst,thenusefabricadhesivetoattachtheheartembellishment.Stitchonbuttonsandbeadsasdesired.Handstitchamessage,suchaspeace,toapieceofmuslin.Trimthemuslin,andseworglueittothelace.
TextileCuff
TheitemsIcannotpassupwhentreasurehuntingarebrokennecklaces,tattereddoilies,shellorglassbuttons,quiltscraps,earringsandotherlikeitems.ThesecastoffsaddauniquecharmtoanythingImake,andtomethereisnobettercreativefeelingthanturningadiscardeditemintobeautifulwearableartandone-of-a-kindjewelry,likethistextilecuff.Ilovemakingandwearingtextilecuffswithmyeverydayattireorforanightonthetown.

STEP1Tocreatethebaseforyourcuff,cuttwopiecesofquiltto1 ⁄ ”x8 ⁄ ”(4cmx22cm),oruseapurchasedalterablecuff.Setasidethepieceforthebackofthecuff.Sewtrimtothelongedgesofthetoppiece,orattachthetrimusingfabricadhesive.

STEP2Sewthetextileflowertothecenterofthetopcuffpieceorattachwithfabricadhesive.Accenttheflowerwithaclearglassbutton.Cutasmallcrocheteddoilyinhalfandattachittothecuffusingfabricadhesive.
STEP3Sewbuttonsrandomlytobothsidesoftheflowerorusefabricadhesive,ifyouprefer.
STEP4Sewrhinestonetrimtothelongedgesofthecuff,placingoneontheupperrightedgeandoneonlowerleftedge.Sewastrandofpearlbeadchaintoeachsideofthetextileflower.
STEP5Sewabuttonontooneendofthecuff;thiswillbepartoftheclosure.
STEP6Usingfabricadhesive,attachthesecondstripofthecufftothebackofthealteredcuff.Beforeyoucloseuptheendoppositetheclosurebutton,createaloopwithbaker’stwineandinsertitbetweenthetwolayers.Addadditionalglue,ifneeded.
TipIfyoudonotwantabuttonclosure,youcancreateabow-typeclosure.Sandwichapieceofseambindingbetweenthetwolayersofthecuff,leavingenoughseambindingateachendtotieabow.
AssemblageCharm
ThischarmislayeredwithadoilyIcutfromatatteredtablerunnerandacanvaspieceIcutfromanoldtote.Iwantedtogroundthepiece,soIaddedafeltedblackcircle.Ithelpsaccentthevintagebuttonssinceeverythingelseisinanecrucolorscheme.Ireallydon’tworryaboutmixinggold,copperandsilver.Iliketheeclecticfeelthatcomesacrosswhenalloftheseareusedtogether.Attachthecharmtopearlbeadchainorrosary-stylebeadsoralink-stylechain.

STEP1Cutapieceofcanvasto1 ⁄ ”x1 ⁄ ”(4cmx4cm).Cutapieceofburlapintoasquareslightlysmallerthan1 ⁄ ”(4cm).Usingfabricadhesive,attachtheburlaptothecanvas,thenglueapieceoflacetrimtotheburlap.

STEP2Formasmallballofrovinginyourhands.
STEP3Placetheballontothebrush-styleneedle-feltingpadanduseapen-stylefeltingneedletofelttherovingintoacircle.Whileyouarefeltingtheroving,makesuretoflipthecircleovertofeltbothsidesevenly.
STEP4Tokeeptheshapeofthecircle,feltthesidesoftheroving,too.Feltuntilthecircleisapproximately1”(3cm)indiameter.
STEP5Attachthefeltedcircletothelaceusingfabricadhesive.Layertwobuttonsanduseaneedleandembroideryflosstosewthemtogetherthroughtheholesinthebuttons.Usinghotglue,attachthestackedbuttonstothefeltedcircle.
STEP6WithaCrop-A-Dile,punchtwoholesinthesquare,oneineachofthetwouppercorners.Punchathirdholeinthebottomcenter.Seteyeletsineachoftheholes,usingtheCrop-A-Dile.Tofinishthisproject,attachalengthofpearlbeadchaintoeacheyeletusing
jumprings.Forsomeaddedbling,attachachandelierbeadtotheendofthechainthathangsfromthebottomeyelet.
MonochromaticBackground
Creatingamonochromaticcanvasisagreatwaytouseyourtrimandlaceremnants.Thecoloroftheleftoversdoesn’tmatterbecauseyou’llbepaintingovereachpiecewithgessoandpaint.Allyouneedtodoisattachthetrimsandtextileitemsinacollage-likemannertoyourcanvas.Oncethefabricadhesivedries,youcanattachbuttons,beadsorpearlsandcoattheentirecanvaswithseverallayersofgesso.Oruseonecoatofgessoandthepaintcolorofyourchoice.Thispieceisperfecttodisplayonaneaselorplaceinaframedshadow

STEP1Attachlacetrim,fabricflowersanddoiliesofanycolortothecanvasusingfabricadhesive.
STEP2Accenttheflowersanddoiliesusingbuttonsandbeads.
STEP3Oncetheadhesiveisdry,useapaintbrushtoapplygessodirectlyontopofthetextiles.Letdry.
STEP4Continueapplyinggessountilthecolorsfromthetextilesnolongershow.Allowthegessotodryinbetweencoats.Ifyouwanttospeedthedryingprocess,useaheattool.Tofinishthisproject,printwordsonordinarycomputerpaperorusea
rubberstampandink.Ironthepaperbetweentwopiecesofwaxpaper.Cutoutthewordsorphrasesandadherethemtothepiece,asdesired.Foralittleaddeddimension,paintabeadofgessoaroundtheedgeofeachword.
TipAmonochromaticbackgroundcanbeanycolor.Nomatterwhatcoloryouchoose,Isuggestyoupaintthefirstlayerwithgesso.Thiswillprovideagoodbaseforwhatevercoloryouchoosetopaintwith.
DahliaFromQuiltScraps
Thisquilteddahliaistheperfectexampleofcreatingwithtatteredandtorntextiles.Momgavemethistatteredquiltmadebymygreat-great-auntswholivedintheoldhomesteadinBuckhannon,WestVirginia.AsIthoughtaboutwhatIwantedtocreate,atattereddahliacametomind,asitisanold-fashionedflowerthatoneofmyauntsmighthavegrowninhergarden.Thecenterofthedahliaiscreatedfromavintageearring.Largeearringslikethisareperfecttouseforflowercenters;justremovethecliponthebackwithafewtwistsofapairofpliers.

STEP1Usingthepatternsprovided,cutfifteenofthe1 ⁄ ”(4cm)petals,thirteenofthe1 ⁄ ”(3.2cm)petalsandnineofthe1”(3cm)petalsfromthequilt.Foldthepetalssotherightandleftstraightedgesmeet,andgluetheminplacewithhotglue.Repeatthisstepuntilallthepetalshavebeenformed.

Notallphotosandcollageshavetobeplacedonacanvas.Sincesomuchoflifehappensinthekitchen,usingavintageplateasthebaseofthiscollagemadeperfectsense.ThispiecefeaturesaphotoofmygrandfatherSpinneyandhissiblingsstandinginfrontofthefamilycar.Toaddaninterestingtexturetoacollagelikethis,threadembroideryflossthrougheachbuttonandsecureitwithadoubleknotonthefrontofthebutton.Trimtheembroideryflossandgivetheendsatwistwithyourfingers.Thisgivestheflossadistressedlookandaddsdimensiontothebuttons.

STEP1Usingalaserprinter,printablack-and-whitephotoontocomputerpaper.Placeapieceofnaturalmuslinontopoftheprintedphoto,leavingatleasta ⁄ ”(13mm)borderofmuslinallaroundthephoto.
STEP2Usingcleartape,securethemuslinedgestothepaper.

STEP3Placethepaperintoyourprinterandprintasusual.Removetheprintedmuslinfromthepaper.
STEP4Usingasewingmachineandblackthread,sewastraightstitchafewtimesaroundtheedgesofthephoto.Usingpinkingshears,trimtheedgesofthemuslin,makingsureyoudonotcutthesewnareas.Tofinishthisproject,cutapieceofpatternedpapertofittheinteriorofyour
plate,andinktheedgesofthepaper.Gluethepaperinplace.Addyourmessagetotherimoftheplatewithalphabetandnumberstickers.Tothepaper,adherevariousitemsofyourchoice,includingalinenheartembellishment,apieceofburlapandsomelace.Adheretheprintedmuslin.Addmoreembellishments,includingcrocheteddoilies,threadedvintage
buttons,anoldearring,seambindingandpaperflowers.
FabricYo-Yos
Ifyouhaveonlyasmallamountoffabricfromatreasuredfamilyheirloom—suchasasimpledishcloth,scarf,dressorhankie—fabricyo-yosareaperfectwaytocreateapieceofheirloomarttopassdownfromgenerationtogeneration.Fabricyo-yosarebeautifulwhenclusteredtogether,asinthispiece,oryoucanplaceoneorjustafewyo-yosintoafabric-linedshadowboxframe
withawordornamestampedontoapieceofmetal.Inmypiece,Istampedfamily.
WhatYou’llNeedFabricscraps,buttons,fabricadhesive,yo-yomaker,embroideryfloss,sewingneedle,scissors
STEP1Trimyourfabricremnants,vintagedishtowels,hankiesorfeedsackstothesizerequiredforyouryo-yomaker.Placethefabricintheyo-yomaker,andpositionthefabricsothere’sanequalamountoverhangingonallsidesatthebackoftheyo-yomaker.
STEP2Threadthesewingneedlewithtwostrandsofembroideryflossandbeginstitchingyouryo-yo.
STEP3Onceyouhavecompletedstitching,removethefabricfromthetheyo-yomaker.
STEP4Pulltheendsoftheembroideryflosstogethertoformtheyo-yo,andtietheendsoftheflosswithadoubleknot.
STEP5Attachabuttontothecenterusingfabricadhesive.
Tofinishtheproject,makeatotaloftwentyyo-yosandlayerthemontoa5”x7”(13cmx18cm)canvasusingafabricadhesive.Makesureeachoneoverlapsthenextjustabit.Wrapa7”x9”(18cmx23cm)canvaswithafabricremnantandsecureit
usingfabricadhesive.Adhereapieceoflaceinthecenterofthefabric-coveredcanvas.Adheretheyo-yo-coveredcanvasontopofthat.Addacharmtooneofthebuttonsifyou’dlike.Tolearnhowtostampawordontothemetalcharm,seeStampedMetal.
TipAddsomevarietytothepiecebyusingsomebuttonswithembroideryflossdoubleknottedinthefront,somewithembroideryflossorthreadknottedinthebackandsomewithnothreadatall.Thisvariationkeepsthetextilepiecefromlookingtoouniformandpredictable.
PatternTissueDoll
Ilovewhenonethingleadstoanotherandthenanother.That’sjustwhathappenedwiththisdoll.IwasgettingreadytocreateaminicanvaswhenInoticedthebottlecapabovethecanvasandthought,Hmmm,thislookslikeaheadandbody.BeforeIknewit,theideasstartedflowing,andIwasonamissiontocreateafunkydollusingallkindsofitemsfromaroundmystudio.Itreallyistruethatyouneverknowwheninspirationisgoingtohit.Ihadnoteven
thoughtaboutmakingadoll,butbecausethosetwoitemscametogether,Iwasfashioningadollfromallkindsofoddsandends.

STEP5Toattachtherhinestonetrim,placethetrimaroundtheedgesofthephoto.Useaheattooltogentlyandcarefullyheatthewaxaroundtherhinestonetrim.
STEP6Whilethewaxisstillwarm,usetweezerstogentlypresstherhinestonetrimintothewax.
STEP7Attachthebuttonstothepaperoftheroofpiecewithalittleliquidadhesive.Oncetheadhesiveisdry,placebeeswaxpelletsontopofthebuttonsandmeltthewaxwiththeiron.
STEP8Whenthebeeswaxisasthickasyoulike,swipethehotironoverthewaxtomeltitslightlyandsprinkleafewgoldmicrobeadsintothehotwaxtoaddcolorandtexture.

ThisphotohasalwaysbeenoneofmyfavoritesofmeandmygrandmotherSpinney.Iclearlyrememberthedaythispicturewastaken,asitwasmyauntLinda’swedding.Ihadbrieflyfallenasleepinthepew,andIwokeuptotheorganplayingandAuntLindawalkingdowntheaisle.Sincethiscanvaswasinspiredbylove,Ichosesheetmusicheartstoembedintothebeeswax.Onegreatthingaboutcombiningpaperandbeeswaxisthatthepaperbecomesabittransparentoncethemeltedwaxisapplied.Inthispiece,Ilikehowthehandwritingfromtheledgerpapershowsthroughthephoto.

STEP1Rolltwoballsofequalsize,onefromeachoftheputtycontainers.Kneadtheballstogetheruntilthecolorbecomesuniform.Formadiscthatislargeenoughtocoverthefrontoftheitemtobemolded.Placetheputtyontoanonstickcraftsheetandpresstheitemintoit;letcureforabout10minutes.Oncetheputtyhascured,gentlylifttheitemoutofthemold.
STEP2Placethemeltingpotontothenonstickcraftsheet.HeatthemeltingpotontheUTEEsettingforseveralminuteswiththelidinplace.PourintheclearUTEEtothemaxlineandaddafewsprinklesofwhiteUTEE.ThewhiteUTEEisconcentrated,soyoudonotneedtousemuch.Replacethelidandallowtheenameltomelt.Usethespatulatogentlymixthewhitewiththeclear.Ifyoumixtoo
vigorously,youwillcreatebubbles.Ifthishappens,useyourheattooltopopthebubblesbyapplyingalittleheattothesurfaceofthemeltedUTEE.
STEP3CarefullypourtheUTEEintothemold.Letitsetforafewminutes.
STEP4Onceithasset,removetheembellishmentfromthemold.

TheinspirationforthesefauxglasstilescamewhileIwasonatriptoBuckhannon,WestVirginia,afewsummersago.AsIwaswatchingsomeamazingglassblowingartisansataglassfactory,itcametomethatIcouldre-createthelookofhandblownglasstilesusingclearultrathickembossingenamelandcoloredglassshards.ThefinishedtilescameoutevenbetterthanIimagined.Eachisunique,asisallhandblownglass,andcanbeusedaswallartordecorationonboxlidsorattachedtoabailasabeautifulcharmfora
