Scheduling and your Aeries Account• Scheduling materials will be mailed home the week of February 7th. The letter

includes instructions as well as the teacher recommendations for Math, English, and

World Language.

• Aeries will open for scheduling Monday, February 13th through Tuesday, Feb 21st.

All students must schedule during this time, regardless of when their sophomore

counseling appointment is.

• Students must complete:

• Time Management Activity

• Request Placement Form (if necessary)

• Forms must be signed by the student and parent

• All materials are due to the counseling office by Friday February 24th by 3pm.

College Admissions Factors

• Coursework: Every school considers a student’s course work to be very

important. The college is concerned with the type, amount and level of

coursework.

• GPA: Most schools calculate grade point average from grades earned in

academic classes, typically giving extra points for honors and AP

courses. UC’s and CSU’s calculate GPA with grades from 10th and 11th.

Most schools consider 9th through 12th.

• Entrance Test Scores: Most schools require SAT or ACT although the

writing portion might be optional. Some of the competitive schools

require or recommend the SAT subject tests. The UC system no longer

requires SAT subject tests, though they are helpful in the evaluation

process.

College Admissions Factors cont.

• Essay: Each school evaluates personal statements differently. It is very

important for the essay to be well written and to provide information that

is not presented elsewhere in the application.

• Activities and Community Service: Colleges look for activities that

demonstrate interest or contribution. Leadership positions and

commitment to involvement are more valuable than a “laundry list” of

activities.

• Honors and Awards: Awards and honors for volunteer work, athletic

competition, the arts, and academic achievements are listed on the

college applications. It is the student’s responsibility to keep his/her own

record of recognitions. The NAVIANCE resume is a convenient place to

do this.

• Letters of Recommendation: Many private schools require a

teacher and counselor recommendation. Students should ask for

these recommendations at the end of their junior year.

• Interviews: Some private schools require or recommend

interviews. It is the student’s responsibility to find out if an

interview is required as part of the application process.

were given to all student during Freshmen Conference. Students who

lost or forgot their log in code can see Mrs. Juge or Mrs. Fuh in the

Counseling Office.

2. Be sure your student has started a resume. Naviance has a resume

builder feature under the “About Me” tab. If students create their own,

it is helpful to include the following categories:
