In doing so, Absalom made enemies and had to flee for his life. In this passage, we again see him making enemies, but this time he does not intend to flee. David and those loyal to him are now Absalom’s enemies, and David finds himself fleeing from danger. This has occurred in his life several times since he was anointed as the Lord’s chosen king. o Psalm 3 This psalm is tied to the experience of David’s fleeing from Absalom. We see David’s keen awareness that his enemies are many (v.1). Not only is this current threat coming from his son, but also “the hearts of the men of Israel” are joined with him. In addition to David having enemies in this rebellion, his enemies contend that the very power of God is insufficient to save him (v.2). Yet, in this psalm, David continues to place his confidence in the LORD for protection and peace as David sleeps in the midst of danger. David asks that the LORD save him, and he stands on the truth that salvation comes only from Him. The Bottom Line: Salvation belongs to the LORD. Questions: Compare and Contrast Absalom and David. On whom did they rely for salvation? How do these texts point us to Christ and the salvation He brings? What practices or mindsets do you have that might lead you to trust or not trust in the Lord for physical and spiritual salvation? PRAY o Read Window on the World, pg. 114‐115 Mandinka (Gambia and Senegal) o Use Prayer Card SING o Use lyric sheet and mp3 download of “I Will Exalt You” o A key phrase from the Westminster Shorter Catechism states, “the chief end of man is to glorify God, and to enjoy Him forever.” Simply put, we exist on this planet to bring God glory in every facet of our lives, and in this we find great and eternal satisfaction. However, it is only when we submit to Jesus Christ as the Savior and Lord of our lives that we experience this fulfillment. This week, as we prepare for an extended time of corporate musical worship, we chose I will Exalt You as the Family Worship Song. The lyrics of this song provide a great opportunity for us, as we gather together under the banner of Jesus Christ and His Gospel, to embrace our chief end. MEMORIZE o Psalm 51:17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.
