Notes for the Journey

For the last two months, we have been

looking at the question of “Why we do certain things in the life of the church and Why they are important”. Subjects have included church, worship, prayer, communion, stewardship, evangelism, baptism and outreach. One of the common themes that is woven through out all of these various facets of a life of faith is that of community and unity. We can’t and don’t live this life of faith apart from one another. Living in community and in unity is not an easy way to live.

I came across this quote the other day that really sums this up for the church, “Unity refers not to total uniformity but to utter inseparability.” (Disciples of Christ Theology Commission, 1997, A Word on the Church). We are together under the headship of Jesus and are the Body of Christ as Paul describes in his letters. We may not always agree with

one another on a wide variety of topics, but we cannot live apart from one another.

We are inseparable because we are bound together under the Head that is Jesus (Colossians 1) and we have the Holy Spirit that lives within us (Romans 8). We are united not just with those in our congregation, but with believers around the world and not just today but throughout the years. Those who have gone before us, have brought us to where we are now. No, we are not perfect, but we strive to be faithful. Your participation in the life of the Church, which is in the life of the people of the church, helps you to see God’s action and allows each of us to participate and fulfill our ongoing role in the Body of Christ.

We’ll see you in worship!

Peace.

We now have an app so you can have this on your smart phone. The app name is “Dallas First Christian Church”. This app is much more than just a giving site. You can send in prayer requests, read the Bible, listen to Darren’s messages, or connect to our Facebook page. Be sure to check it out.

NEIGHBOR LINKUP COMMUNITY CONNECTION The churches of Dallas and other community helping organizations have come together in a new way to help people when there is a need. Called Neighbor Linkup, this website allows needs to be screened and then sent out directly to people who have signed up with an account. When there is a need posted on the site, you will get an email with the need and contact information of the helping organization. If you can help with the need, you contact the helping organization person and go forward from there. It is a simple process and you are encouraged to do that and be involved in the life of the community. The website is www.neighborlinkup.com/dallas if you would like to check it out. If you have any questions, please contact Pastor Darren.

MODERATOR’S MUSINGS

2 Corinthians 5:1 speaks to us about living in this tent of a body. We now must think of ways to take care of our tent. Do you know what keeps this tent dry, free from holes and serviceable? It is when we do such things as reading the Bible, devotions and prayer. These simple steps keep our tent free from mold, rips and helps it weather any storm that comes along. As we live to do God's will, we may want to upgrade our tent to a tent trailer or a mobile home that holds up stronger down life's highway. So, along with our road map, we know Christ steers us toward His promises.

IMPORTANT! NEW BUS DRIVERS/HELPERS NEEDED!

We have had one new person volunteer to be a bus driver; however, we could use several more to ensure we have someone to

drive the bus each Sunday. Ideally, we should have 2 people on the bus each week, so if you don’t want to drive, but would like to help, talk to Royce Thorpe or John Dodge.

SUNDAY SCHOOL The Adult Sunday School class, which meets in the Parlor at 9:30 am has a new study starting November 5: Get ready for the wettest, stormiest, wildest trip through the Gospels you’ve ever taken! The Gospels are dramatic and incredibly wet, set in a rich maritime culture on the shores of the Sea of Galilee. Yet we’ve missed much of this perspective—until now.

In this 6-part series, Leslie Leyland Fields, author, speaker, and seasoned Alaskan fisherwoman, takes us on a journey through the life of Christ. She leads us across the waters of time and culture out onto the Sea of Galilee, through a rugged season of commercial fishing with her family in Alaska, and through the waters of the New Testament beside the ragtag fishermen disciples. Her own story and her fresh insights will challenge our understanding of Jesus and what it means to “Come, follow me.”

Gary Ivey is teaching is a class for Middle School and High School students.

Katie Berberick is teaching a class for elementary children.
