Several of his children were married in Indiana and then, with most of hischildren and their families, he moved to Douglas County, Kansas in 1864. One record, however, shows his son Christopher born in Darke County, Ohio, while another states that his wife Lavina wasalso born in Darke County. The discrepancy is slight, since Darke County is adjacent to MontgomeryCounty. Both Abraham and Lavina are buried in the Flory Cemetery (now called Pleasant Hill) just

From "A Genealogy and History of the descendants of Jacob Flora Senior of Franklin County,Virginia" compiled by Joel Cephas Flora, copyright 1951

"Many of the descendants of the immigrant father, Joseph J. Flory, Sr., family that landed atPhiladelphia in 1733 are of the Dunker Brethren faith. Just when they were first won to this Protestantfaith may be a debatable question. It could be possible that they may have joined the Dunker Brethrenin Germany before coming to America. We have definite information that several members of thisfamily joined the Brethren church in the Conestoga congregation in Lancaster County, PA. The JacobFlora, Sr. of Franklin County, became a member of this congregation by baptism in 1748. TheBrethren have many things in common with the Mennonites, the Quakers and the Moravians. Allthese sects settled in eastern Pennsylvania about the same time. The first Mennonites came in 1683and the first Brethren in 1719. The Quakers and Moravians preceded them a few years....

The descendants of the Jacob Flora, Sr., or Franklin County, Virginia, donated the ground for the threepioneer Brethren churches. They have been loyal supporters of these churches through the years andare still active in their promotion. .........

Although the Flora family has generally been considered German, I (Joel) am strongly of the opinionthat earlier they were French. The pioneer, Joseph, was listed as a Huguenot. This name was appliedto French Lutherans by a monk in the course of one of his sermons because it was customary for theFrench Protestants to congregate around the palace of King Hugo during the evening. The variousspellings, such as Fleury, Flury, Fleuri, used interchangebly in the earlier records confirm this Frenchorigin.

Joseph J. Flory's ancestors likely migrated from northeastern France across the border in Palatinate,Germany, shortly after the massacre of St. Bartholomew and 50,000 Protestants, which took place inFrance on August 24, 1572, and began to adapt themselves to their new German surroundings. In the150 years before migration to America began, they became thoroughly German. The commonlanguage used by the immigrant family for the first two or three generations was very largely German.Early wills were also written in German.
