Please Note: Photos and filming are NOT allowed during this

Service, except when the Priest gives explicit permission. Welcome Song All things bright and beautiful, all creatures great and small, all things wise and wonderful, the Lord God made them all. Each little flower that opens, each little bird that sings, he made their glowing colours, he made their tiny wings. The cold wind in the winter, the pleasant summer sun, the ripe fruits in the garden, he made them every one. He gave us eyes to see them, and lips that we might tell, how great is God Almighty, who has made all things well!

Reading (from the Gospel of Matthew)

Read by Barbara, Holly’s Grandma The eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. When they saw him, they worshipped him; but some doubted. Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” This is the Gospel of the Lord.

All Praise to you, O Christ.

Presentation: People of God, will you welcome Holly and uphold her in her new life in Christ?

All With the help of God, we will. Holly, do you want to be baptized?

Holly’s answer Yes! Parents and godparents, the Church welcomes Holly with joy. Today we are trusting God for her growth in faith. Will you pray for her, draw her by your example into the community of faith and walk with her in the way of Christ?

Answer With the help of God, we will. In baptism Holly begins her journey in faith. You speak with her today. Will you care for her and help her to take her place within the life and worship of Christ’s Church?

Answer With the help of God, we will. The Decision: In baptism, God calls us out of darkness into his marvellous light. To follow Christ means dying to sin and rising to new life with him. Therefore I ask: Do you reject the devil and all rebellion against God?

Answer I reject them

Do you renounce the deceit and corruption of evil?

Answer I renounce them Do you repent of the sins that separate us from God and neighbour?

Answer I repent of them

Page 4: Family Service with Baptism - Christ Church Gosport - C of E · PDF fileFamily Service with Baptism Holly Anne Bolton ... Do you submit to Christ as Lord? ... May Almighty God deliver

Do you turn to Christ as Saviour?

Answer I turn to Christ

Do you submit to Christ as Lord?

Answer I submit to Christ

Do you come to Christ, the way, the truth and the life?

Answer I come to Christ

We form a circle around the church. (Cross and lights stand behind Andy.) Holly and her parents and God-parents near Andy at the front. (If you have trouble standing, please sit towards the end of a pew, near those in the circle!) The Sign of the Cross is made on Holly: Holly, Christ claims you for his own; receive the sign of his cross. May Almighty God deliver you from the powers of darkness, restore in you the image of his glory, and lead you in the light

and obedience of Christ. All Amen. Song

During which we pass the sign of the cross, one to another, both ways around the circle Give me joy in my heart keep me praising, Give me joy in my heart I pray, Give me joy in my heart keep me praising, keep me praising till the end of day.

Sing Hosanna! Sing Hosanna! Sing Hosanna to the King of Kings, Sing Hosanna! Sing Hosanna! Sing Hosanna to the King!

Give me peace in my heart keep me resting, give me peace in my heart I pray, Give me peace in my heart keep me resting, Keep me resting till the end of day.

Give me love in my heart keep me serving, Give me love in my heart I pray, Give me love in my heart keep me serving, Keep me serving till the end of day.

We link hands around the church, with those nearest the font putting a hand on it, to “transmit” our water blessing! The Blessing of the Water Father, God of mercy, through these waters of baptism you have filled us with new life as your very own children. From all who are baptised in water and the Holy Spirit you have formed one people, united in your Son, Jesus Christ. You have set us free and filled our hearts with the Spirit of your love that we may live in your peace. You have called your child Holly and all your children to this cleansing water and new birth, that by sharing the faith of your Church she may have eternal life. Bless this water in which she will be baptised. We ask this in

the name of Jesus the Lord. All Amen

Profession of Faith: Let us all affirm together, our common faith in Jesus Christ. Do you believe and trust in God the Father, source of all being and life, the one for whom we exist?

All I believe and trust in him

Do you believe and trust in God the Son, who took our human nature, died for us and rose again?

All I believe and trust in him

Do you believe and trust in God the Holy Spirit, who gives life to the people of God and makes Christ known in the world?

All I believe and trust in him

Holly, is this your faith too?

Holly’s answer Yes! This is the faith of the Church.

All This is our faith. We believe and trust in one God,

Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Song [Christ Church’s Baptism hymn]

During which the Cross and lights lead Holly and her parents and Godparents to the font for the baptism....followed by everyone else! The people came bringing their children

for Jesus Christ to see, And Jesus said, ‘suffer the little children to come unto me’

Page 7: Family Service with Baptism - Christ Church Gosport - C of E · PDF fileFamily Service with Baptism Holly Anne Bolton ... Do you submit to Christ as Lord? ... May Almighty God deliver

‘Of such as these children who come, the Kingdom of God shall be;

Forbid them not, ‘suffer the little children to come to me.’ We offer these children of God baptised in your family, To those who said, ‘suffer the little children to come to me’.

The Baptism of Holly Anne. Certificates are presented

Song

During which everyone follows the cross and lights back to their seats.....and the collection will be taken (please give generously for the church’s life and work.....) I danced in the morning, when the world was begun, and I danced in the moon and the stars and the sun, and I came down from heaven and I danced on the earth, at Bethlehem I had my birth.

Dance then, wherever you may be, I am the Lord of the dance, said he. and I'll lead you all, wherever you may be, and I'll lead you all in the dance, said he.

I danced on the Sabbath and I cured the lame. The holy people they said it was a shame. They whipped and they stripped and they hung me on high, and they left me there on the cross to die. They cut me down and I leapt up high. I am the life that'll never never die I'll live in you if you live in me. I am the Lord of the Dance, said he.

.....if needed, music will continue until the offerings are presented and blessed... The Welcome: Holly, by one Spirit we are all baptized into one body.

All We welcome you into the fellowship of faith;

we are children of the same heavenly Father; we welcome you. The Giving of a Baptism Candle: Holly, you have received the light of Christ; walk in this light all the days of your life.

All Shine as a light in the world

to the glory of God the Father. The Lord’s Prayer

All Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name;

thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. Celebrations and Notices

Shaker Song One more step along the world I go, one more step along the world I go. From the old things to the new, keep me travelling along with you

And it's from the old I travel to the new, keep me travelling along with you.

Page 9: Family Service with Baptism - Christ Church Gosport - C of E · PDF fileFamily Service with Baptism Holly Anne Bolton ... Do you submit to Christ as Lord? ... May Almighty God deliver

Round the corners of the world I turn, more and more about the world I learn. All the new things that I see, you'll be looking at along with me. As I travel through the bad and good, keep me travelling the way I should. Where I see no way to go, you'll be travelling the way, I know. Give me courage when the world is rough, keep me loving though the world is tough. Leap and sing in all I do, keep me travelling along with you. You are older than the world can be, you are younger than the life in me. Ever old and ever new, keep me travelling along with you. Go in the light and peace of Christ.

All Thanks be to God.

THE CHRIST CHURCH CENTRE: As you will all know, Eric and Sue Baker have done a fantastic job in managing our Centre (as the many glowing testimonials from hall users further underline.) But for some time, many of us have been aware of the long hours and great strain this has entailed, especially given that Sue's health is not good. Eric and Sue have decided to step down from their roles with the Centre. We thank them very warmly for all their hard work, and hope that this will give them more time for each other (which they richly deserve!) Having people to manage the Centre who have authority and standing within the church is – I am sure you’ll agree – a great help in keeping the link between the Centre and the life of the church a strong one; which is why I am delighted that Thelma O’Toole (our other Churchwarden) and Kathy Smith have agreed to take over from Eric and Sue, with Thelma (primarily) handling bookings and Kathy (primarily) handling access for those who book the Centre. Eric will continue to be available for “back up”. Kate Evans continues as our cleaner, and Elizabeth Miles and Kathy Ford continue as the catering team, with responsibility for health and hygiene. On that subject, it is crucial that Thelma, Kathy S, Elizabeth and Kathy F work closely to ensure that all hall users are aware (via written and verbal reminders) of their health and hygiene responsibilities – as this was the area of concern that was particularly highlighted during the recent inspection by Gosport Borough Council. The Centre has brought new life to our church, as well as a much-needed financial boost. Long may it continue, and thanks to all those – past and present and future – who are helping it to flourish!

SUPPORTING BRITISH FORCES: 40 Commando Royal Marines are in Afghanistan again. They will be there till Feb 2013. Julie Byrne will be sending them parcels and if anyone wishes to contribute it will be greatly appreciated. She will be sending babywipes and multipacks of haribo sweets as when they are on patrol or at the foreward sangers they have no way of washing; babywipes are ideal and individually wrapped small packs of non-melting sweets can be easilly carried in their kit. They don't need anything else so she is reliably informed! There is a box at the back of church for donations. Thank you.

OUR MEMORIAL BOOK AND CASE AND STAND We have a beautiful Memorial Book

CASE AND STAND, near the War Memorial. The book is in memory of Marjorie Cawte,

and in it, the names of the departed are written. There is now a plaque, revealing that

the case was given by the Revd David and Mrs Sheila Wood. Brian Mirfield will use his calligraphy skills to add future names. There is a fee of £10.00 per name, to cover the

inscribing and a donation to church funds. Forms are available on the back table. The stand was beautifully made by Vic Smith.

SPONSORING THE BREAD AND WINE ON A SUNDAY: If a particular Sunday in the year falls on or near a significant date (perhaps the anniversary of a loved one’s death; a birthday, an anniversary, etc) you can fill in the details on the list in church, and please put £5.00 into the collection. Your name(s), and the dedication (s) will appear on the

pewnotes for that week. The list is on the board at the back.

CHURCH CLEANING: Please help keep our church looking clean on the second Saturday of the month. We start at 10am and, depending how many turn up, finish at about 11.30. We stop for a cuppa and a chat half way! The more of us, the quicker!!

Even if you can only spare half an hour, every little helps.
