We here at NASA understand the importance of providing high qual-ity instruction and programs in art and music. Our school walls and classrooms are print-rich with many examples of the creativity of students. Our End of the Month Assemblies provides an opportunity for our students to showcase their musical talents. We are extra ex-cited this month because our 4th grade class under the direction of one of our newest teacher assistants, Ms. Okwumabua will present a very special presentation in celebration of African American History month (Feb.). I feel blessed to share in these wonderful experiences and I look forward to the brief rest spring break will bring!

Family Science Night

Family Science Night was held on Friday, March 7th at Loma. This night was created to bring the NASA fami-ly together to get our hands dirty and play with science concepts. The focus for our first family science night was the states of matter. With the guidance of teachers families worked together to

make play dough with house hold items. “I loved family science night” said student Andrea Galindo “It was fun getting messy!” Special thank you to all staff that gave their time to stay and organize this wonderful event.

My favorite book is Frankenstein by Mary Shelley What is your favorite place? My favorite place is the beach and swimming pool because I enjoy swimming and relaxing in the sun. Who is your hero? My hero is my mother because she is always will-ing and ready to help out. What is your favorite holiday? My favorite holiday is Valentine’s Day because it is the day of friendship and love, a day to show how much you care! Why do you like working at NASA? I enjoy working in an environment where I can speak my first language with other professionals and families.

Remembering Cesar Chavez

Interview with Ms. Jimenez

On Monday, March 31, is Cesar Chavez day; an official state holiday in Cali-fornia, Colorado, and Texas. The day is commemorated to promote service to the community in honor of Cesar Chavez’s life and work. Cesar Chaves was born in Arizona in 1923. When his family lost their farm during the Great Depression, they packed up their things and began mov-ing from farm to farm, looking for whatever work they could find. Cesar was forced to quit school after eighth grade and work to support the family. When he grew up, Chavez decided to help other farm workers like himself. He helped found the United Farm Workers, a union that fought for safe working conditions and better wages. In 1988, Chavez completed a 36-day fast in protest of the danger-ous and difficult work conditions on the farms. Cesar led the way to change by forming a union and encour-aging farmworkers to vote. He also led boycotts and strikes. His efforts helped improve life for many migrant farmworkers and showed that people can make a difference by working together.

Dr. Seuss was born on March 2, 1904. He was an American cartoonist and writer. His real name was Theodore Seuss Geisel. Dr. Seuss wrote more than 60 children’s books, including some which have been made into movies, such as The Cat in the Hat, Horton Hears a Who, and How the Grinch Stole Christmas.

The National Education Association celebrates Dr. Seuss with Read Across America, the largest reading event in the United States. Thousands of schools participate with read-aloud, read-along, and reading marathons. NASA par-ticipated with Wacky Wednesday. Students brought their pa-jamas and teachers read aloud to students.

Reading Club Reading is fun... Students meet in room 2A every Tuesday and Thursday for reading club with Ms. Fernandez and Ms. Cynthia Mateo. Students do fun activities related to stories they read. This en-courages students to read more frequently, improve their reading skills, and provide the opportunity for book talks.

Aquí en NASA entendemos la importancia de proveer instrucción de alta calidad y programas de arte y música. Nuestras paredes y sa-lones contienen muchos ejemplos de la creatividad de los estu-diantes. Nuestras asembleas de fin de mes proporciona una oportun-idad a nuestros estudiantes de mostrar sus talentos musicales. Nos entusiasma este mes porque nuestra clase de quarto grado bajo la dirección de uno de nuestros más nuevos ayudantes, Ms. Okwuma-bua presentará una presentación muy especial en celebración del mes de la historia afroamericana (Feb.). Me siento bendecido de compartir estas experiencias maravillosas y espero al descanso que el descanso de primavera traerá!

Noche Familiar de Ciencias

Noche Familiar de Cien-cia se llevó a cabo el viernes 7 de marzo en-Loma. Esta noche fue creada para traer a la familia de NASA juntos a ensuciarnos las manos y jugar con los concep-tos científicos. El enfoco de nuestra primera no-che de familia eran los estados de mate-ria. Con la guía de los maestros familias

trabajaron juntos para hacer plastelina con mate-riales encontrados en casa. "Me encanto la noche de ciencia", dijo la estudiante Andrea Galindo "Fue muy divertido ensuciarnos!" Gracias espe-ciales a todo el personal que dieron su tiempo pa-ra quedarse y organizar este maravilloso evento.

Mi heroe es mi mama porque siempre esta dis-puesta y lista para ayudar. Cuale su dia festivo favorito? Mi dia festivo favorito es el Dia de San Valentin porque es el dia del amor y la amistad, un dia para demonstrar cuanto te importa! Porque le gusta trabajar en NASA? Me gusta trabajar donde puedo hablar mi primer idioma con otros profesionales y familias.

Entrevista con Ms. Jimenez

El lunes, 31 de marzo, es el día de César Chávez; una dia festivo ofcial estatal en California, Colorado y Texas. Se conmemora el día para promover el servicio a la comunidad en honor a la vida y obra de Cesar Chavez. Cesar Chaves nació en 1923 en Arizona. Cuando su familia perdió su granja duran-te la gran depresión, empacó sus cosas y comenzaron a mudarse de granja a granja, buscando cualquier trabajo que pudieran encontrar. César se vio obligado a aban-donar la escuela después de octavo grado y trabajo para mantener a la familia. Cuando creció, Chávez decidió ayudar a otros trabajadores agrícolas como él. El ayudó a crear United Farm Workers, un sindicato que luchó por condiciones de trabajo seguras y mejores salarios. En 1988, Chávez completó una protesta de 36 dias por las condiciones de trabajo peligrosas y difíciles en las granjas. Cesar abrió el camino hacia cambio formando un sindicato y animando a los cam-pesinos a votar. Sus esfuerzos han ayudado a mejorar la vida de muchos trabajadores agrícolas immigrantes y de-mostraron que la gente puede hacer una diferencia al trabajar juntos.

Dr. Seuss nació el 2 de marzo de 1904. Era un escritor y caricaturista es-tadounidense. Su verdadero nombre era Theodore Seuss Geisel. La asociación nacional de educación celebra a Dr. Seuss con Read Across America, el evento mas grande de lec-tura en los Estados Unidos. Miles de escuelas participan con lectura en voz alta y maratones de lectura. NASA participó con Miercoles Loco. Los estudiantes trajeron sus pijamas y profesores leyeron en voz alta a los estudiantes.

Club de Lectura La lectura es divertida...Los estudiantes se reunen en el salon 2A cada martes y jueves para partici-par en el club de lectura con Ms. Fernandez y Ms. Cynthia Mateo. Los estudiantes hacen actividades divertidas relacionadas a las historias que leen. Esto anima a los estudiantes a leer con mayor frecuencia, mejorar sus habilidades de lectura y proporcionan la oportunidad para las conver-saciones de libro.
