Across the country former JJB stores were being taken over and converted into Sports Direct stores. Shopfront spraying plays a vital role in the transformation process where we can transform a tired-looking shop front into a brand new one with vitality at a fraction of the cost of a new one.

It’s the shop front that creates the lasting first impression, its important shoppers enter the premises to maintain good sales. The shop front should also convey the image of the brand and it is important to Sports Direct to differentiate from the previous JJB image.

As with all painting processes, a lot of the emphasis with spraying is in the preparation of the surfaces and ensuring we have a sound surface to spray-apply the coatings. Before we started the project, the building required masking prior to spraying to protect overspray onto adjacent areas. The glazing in the entrance doors required protection, as did the floor and walls.

On-site spraying is an ideal method of renovating premises when a quick turnaround time is required. The finish with spraying is superior to that of a brush and roller and a greater film thickness can be applied which means more protection of the substrate.

The external refurbishment to the Sports Direct site in Darlington consisted of on-site spraying of the vertical wall cladding to the front and side elevations and also spraying of the low level windows and doors.

One of the issues with this site in particular was the short turnaround time with which we had to work within.

We had just five weeks from having access to the premises to when Sports Direct wanted to start moving in with their merchandise.

Cut edge corrosion describes the breakdown of the cut edge on metal cladding sheeting which, when exposed to the elements, causes peel back and deterioration.

If cut edge corrosion is left untreated, it can eat into the metal cladding which will lead to weaknesses in the structure where water can enter the building. The process involves preparation of the surface to leave a smooth, debris free edge. A primer layer is applied before applying a fibre tape to seal and reinforce the surface. This is followed by a waterproof coat.

Tortherm is a high performance rigid polyisocyanurate (PIR) foam board, available with a tongue and groove edge detail to help prevent thermal bridging at board joints and provide easy alignment and rapid installation.

Tortherm boards are lightweight, resilient, rot-proof, durable and maintenance free. The boards are easily cut using a shaped-wing knife or fine-toothed saw.

REFURBISHMENTThe depot for Jofson Ltd, the supplier of Mitsubishi trucks,

was in need of some refurbishment. Cladding Coatings were brought in to re-paint 450m2 of the external metal wall

cladding, re-coat three faded roller shutter doors and cover 300m2 of internal concrete floor.

A shopfront refurbishment project in which Cladding Coatings were responsible for the redecoration of the external building envelope including cladding, guttering, powder coated aluminium windows, doors and canopy areas.

MOTORPOINT, WIDNES

The exterior was sprayed in colours to match the branding of the company, a complete change from white to black and orange. As usual cladding coatings were able to complete the work without any disruption to the store.

WYNSORS WORLD OF SHOES, LIVERPOOL

We carried out our on-site spraying service, giving their building a fresh new look and reforming the building’s image. The building was a brown colour but has now been lightened and refreshed with a grey and blue coating system.

The contract involved preparing and painting all the powder coated aluminium windows, doors, frames and panels both internally and externally. The project ran over two floor phases which meant that the client was able to keep operating without moving out.

OFFICES, HERTFORD

This project included three main entrances, the external masonry, car park walls, stair cases and railings. The project was challenging due to the poor weather conditions, carrying out the work in winter but also because of the large areas of masonry requiring coating.

NELSON HOUSE, ALTRINCHAM

Flaking paint and faded metal cladding panels were just some of the problems for the successful production company in Media City, image was very important and the building needed to match their brand. The 700m2 project included onsite spraying of gutters, metal cladding, brick work and shutter doors.

We assess the stage of deterioration of the roof or cladding that we have observed. The cycle starts from the installation of new material which will suffer some fading in colour gradually worsening to the point where it shows clear signs of cracking and corrosion. After this stage it will start to fail, by which stage it will need replacing as it is beyond any repair.

The sooner the deterioration is identified and corrected the more cost savings can be made longer term as repair and refurbishment is cheaper than replacement.
