I am a new member to the Board of Directors here at the Family Resource Network. In the past I have utilized the Family Resource Network services for clients and I have been extremely impressed with the organization and their dedication to the families they serve, so when I was asked to serve as a board member, I was honored. I have worked with many families with disabilities for several years as a therapist for a private agency. I completed my PhD program in psychology and completed my specialization in Neurotherapy. I am certified provider in Quantitative Electroencephalographs (brain mapping) and Neurofeedback. In my practice and personal life, I am dedicated to helping others and enjoy being a part of their lives. I am a mother of four children and have met my own set of challenges so I understand that the support of others can make a significant difference. Another school year is wrapping up, our children are another year older, and we are looking forward to another summer full of memories. However, some of us know that summer comes with boredom, frustration and anxiety for our kids and ourselves. I would like to offer some tips to help parents and caregivers overcome some of these obstacles, to better take care of themselves and the children they care for. First would be to create a regular daily routine…for you and your child. Include: Exercise - which proves to be good for the body and the mind. Take a walk, go outside and dig a small patch for some vegetables, ride your bikes, do some yoga. Wherever your interest’s lie - take that and run with it. Diet - watch what you are ingesting. Many of us know that our children have food sensitivities, but we tend to eat whatever we can grab. Take caution and be aware of what you are putting in your mouth. Buy fresh veggies and fruit at local produce markets and have them readily available when you or your child needs a snack. This will prevent sugar crashes and mood swings - you may be pleasantly surprised! Sleep - it is a fact that on average, children aged 3-5 need from 11-13 hours per night, middle-school children 10 -11 hours, and teens and preteens 8 ½ - 10 hours. Have, and enforce, a strict bed time routine and, if possible, remove any electronic stimulation from their sleeping area. These activate the brain. Try calming music (at least an hour before lights out) or some lavender oil on the pillow case as alternatives. Caregivers need sleep too. It is easy as a parent/caregiver to think of time at night to be very precious alone time, and it is. Just don’t forget that your body also needs sleep and your mind needs time to shut down also. You need at least 8 hours of sleep so your body can heal and prepare for the coming day. The most important thing that comes with care giving for our special children is having the energy and wherewithal to create a healthy, calm, and creative space for our families. Family Resource Network cares about you as much as your children! Please call us at (607) 432-0001 or visit our website www.familyrn.org if you are feeling burned out, on the verge, or maybe just need some tips to help you day to day. I would also like to introduce one of our new board members who graciously agreed to be in the board spotlight this time around: Please welcome Adrianna Steffens… From our Executive Director:

From our Board of Directors:

As we welcome back spring weather, we are reminded of rebirth and rejuvenation. Another

school year is wrapping up, our children are another year older, and we are looking forward

to another summer full of memories. However, some of us know that summer comes with

boredom, frustration and anxiety for our kids and ourselves. I would like to offer some tips

to help parents and caregivers overcome some of these obstacles, to better take care of

themselves and the children they care for.

First would be to create a regular daily routine…for you and your child.

Include:

Exercise - which proves to be good for the body and the mind. Take a walk, go outside and dig a small patch

for some vegetables, ride your bikes, do some yoga. Wherever your interest’s lie - take that and run with it.

Diet - watch what you are ingesting. Many of us know that our children have food sensitivities, but we tend to

eat whatever we can grab. Take caution and be aware of what you are putting in your mouth. Buy fresh veggies

and fruit at local produce markets and have them readily available when you or your child needs a snack. This

will prevent sugar crashes and mood swings - you may be pleasantly surprised!

Sleep - it is a fact that on average, children aged 3-5 need from 11-13 hours per night, middle-school children 10

-11 hours, and teens and preteens 8 ½ - 10 hours. Have, and enforce, a strict bed time routine and, if possible,

remove any electronic stimulation from their sleeping area. These activate the brain. Try calming music (at least

an hour before lights out) or some lavender oil on the pillow case as alternatives. Caregivers need sleep too. It

is easy as a parent/caregiver to think of time at night to be very precious alone time, and it is. Just don’t forget

that your body also needs sleep and your mind needs time to shut down also. You need at least 8 hours of sleep

Therapeutic Play for Individuals with Social and Communication Impairments

There is also a positive effect on these domains if the play is directed by a parent or other adult. Our instructor, Phyllis Walsh, ACSW, will show us firsthand how best to use the power of play to enhance the psychological and social well being of our loved ones

with disabilities, including disabilities that make socialization and communication difficult.

About Our Speaker: Phyllis-Ann Walsh, ACSW has post-graduate training and experience in the principles of attachment therapy and Theraplay. Theraplay is highly successful with children that are

developmentally delayed or have attachment issues.

“Toilet Training When You’ve Already Tried EVERYTHING”

Presenter: Lori Martin, Instructional Support in Special Education at BOCES

Tuesday May 8, 2012, 5:30-7:30pm

Parents and teachers have tried many approaches to teaching their children to use the toilet

independently. Not all children respond to the same teaching techniques. A method that is helpful in one child's

situation may not be useful in another case. I will discuss different strategies that we have found to be successful for

some of our students for whom the traditional techniques were not effective.

About our presenter: My name is Lori Martin, I work at Broome Tioga BOCES and my title is Instructional Support in Special Education. When I first started at BOCES I was a teacher in our Oak Tree Program which is for our students with autism. I have done many trainings around autism including: puberty, independence, hygiene, structuring the classroom, toileting and more. Outside of BOCES I am involved in a non-profit group Alive With Autism and also teach at BCC “The Pieces of Autism.” ___________________________________________________________________________________________

(ONC), and Greater Southern Tier (GST). Overall, we are charged with 71 school districts stretching from

parts of Greene County all the way to Alleghany County in our western quadrant.

The Southern Tier SEPC has gone through some changes in the past few months. We have a new Information

and Outreach Specialist, Michelle Cole, who has been active with FRN for a number of years; she most recently

was employed through Parent to Parent of NYS. The Parent Center also has a new Director, Matthew Harby,

who joined the Parent Center staff in February of 2012 and took on the Program Director position in March.

Both Michelle and Mat have been active in re-invigorating the Parent Center with fresh ideas and concepts to

allow us to better serve you!

The goal of the Special Education Parent Center is to provide education, training, and resources to parents of

children with disabilities in order to promote and empower meaningful involvement in their child’s educational

plan. The Special Education system is complex and full of regulations for parents to decipher - we can help!

Check out our website, www.ParentCenteratFRN.org, for the latest memorandums, upcoming trainings, and

other news and updates.

SEPC is always looking for training ideas all over its catchment area! If you have an idea for a training, or note

a particular training need in your community, call our office at 607-432-0001 and discuss it with us. Our current

training offerings are posted on our website, and we utilize Facebook for information dissemination as well

(“LIKE” us @ Southern Tier Special Education Parent Center!) We look forward to meeting more of you in

the coming months and encourage you to reach out to us with any ideas or questions!

The Southern Tier Special Education Parent Center, at FRN, will be open the third Saturday of each

month, from 9am-1pm, to assist families who are unable to access our services during normal business

hours. On May 19th, Mat will be sharing information on Summer Schools and Summer Camps. On

June 16th, Kathy will be sharing information on Summer Safety.

As part of the New York State Education Department’s State Performance Plan, certain schools are required to

measure schools’ facilitated involvement of parents in the Special Education planning process as a means of

improving services and results for their children. Schools are required to inform you of the survey and provide a

copy for you, you may also get a copy online at: http://www.p12.nysed.gov/specialed/spp/2012/ParentSurvey.pdf .

It is very important to fill out these short surveys as a means for the state to address any areas of weakness.

If you have any questions, or need help filling out the survey, call our office at 607-432-0001 or e-mail us at

[email protected].
