The new family medicine clinical facilityconstruction is ongoing and is runningahead of schedule. The program'sapplication for accreditation throughthe Accreditation Council for GraduateMedical Education will be submitted inthe very near future.

Welcome to our new family medicineresidency coordinator in Winter Haven,Nicole Russell, MHSA, CMA. Nicoleearned a master of science in health

services administration from the LakeErie College of Osteopathic Medicinein 2017, and most recently has beenserving as a home health agencyadministrator in Tampa. She hasexperience working in continuingprofessional development and medicaleducation at the USF Health Centerand at Lee Health in Fort Myers,among other positions during hereducation. We are excited to haveNicole on our FSU COM team andbelieve she will be a tremendous assetas Dr. Falk works to receiveaccreditation for our new FM residencyprogram located at Winter HavenHospital / Bay Care. An experience ofNicole’s is accomplishing initialaccreditation through CommunityHealthcare Access Program (CHAP)for Neurovascular Home Healthcare,and accreditation with commendationthrough the Accreditation Council forContinuing Medical Education(ACCME) standards for the Lee HealthCME Program.

Teambuilding Gathering

The entire PGY-2 class is recognizedfor taking the time to go to Dr. Gitu'shome recently, with their families, fordinner and fellowship. All attending hada wonderful time and the Gitus arelooking forward to hosting the PGY-1and PGY-3 classes in the near future.

Healthy Lifestyles

Residents, Drs. Renee Wong, MiriShlomi, and Katie Dixon took time toattend a talk on the benefits of a plantbased diet by Dr. Garth Davis, aphysician, triathlete and author of thebook Proteinaholic. Thank you forproactively engaging in healthy lifestyleofferings in the Fort Myers community.

General Surgery at Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare

Resident, Dr. Paul Clark (PGY-4)received his Fundamentals ofLaparoscopic Surgery (FLS)certification. FLS was designed forsurgical residents, fellows andpracticing physicians to learn andpractice laparoscopic skills to have theopportunity to measure and documentthose skills. The test measurescognitive knowledge, case/problemmanagement skills and manualdexterity. The FLS program contenthas been endorsed by the AmericanCollege of Surgeons.

Textbook Revision

Now combining general surgery andthe specialties in one volume, this SixthEdition of Essentials of GeneralSurgery and Surgical Specialtiesfocuses on the information all medicalstudents need to know to pass theNBME surgery shelf or other surgeryrotation examinations. Faculty Dr.Michael Sweeney contributed to thechapter on the stomach.

Something that always goes along withthe new year are the resolutions to behealthier in both our food and lifestyle.It is important not just at the beginningof the new year but to be able to carrya goal of eating nutritiously (anddeliciously!) throughout the entire year.We have included severalrecommendations from the NationalOffice of Disease Prevention andHealth Promotion dietary guidelines tohelp everyone establish a sustainable,healthy diet plan.
