FAMILY LITERACY NIGHT
What is reading comprehension?
Reading comprehension is understanding and making
connections to the text that is being read.
READING COMPREHENSION
Common misconception:Reading fast makes you a good reader.
Truth:Understanding what you read and making
personal connections to the text makes you a good reader.
READING COMPREHENSION
Common misconception:My child self-checks their reading strategies
automatically.
Truth:Your child needs lots of practice, and
continual guidance with perfecting their comprehension strategies.
READING COMPREHENSION
Common misconception:My child is forced to read boring text that they are not
interested in. Therefore, they have no interest in reading.
Truth:At Pleasant Run, we encourage students to select their
own individual text based on student interest and personal reading levels. These guidelines establish a
more engaged reader.
READING COMPREHENSION
Reading becomes more meaningful when…
The reader can CONNECT to it.
MAKING CONNECTIONS
There are several different types of connections.
Text-to-self Text-to-text Text-to-world Text-to-media

A connection the reader has between the text and their own personal experiences.
TEXT-TO-SELF
A text-to-text connection is:
A connection the reader has between the text and
another text they have read in the past.
TEXT-TO-TEXT
A text-to-world connection is:
A connection the reader has between the text and a real
world event.
TEXT-TO-WORLD
A text-to-media connection is:
