A Message from
Intern Angela
Children and Youth Activities: There are a TON of
different camps, service days, and trips for both kids
and teens this summer! See the Children & Family and
Youth & Family pages in this newsletter for the full
scoop!
Bible 101 Class: This summer, Cathy Hendrikson and
I will be teaching a class on some Bible basics! We’ll
start with dinner and fellowship together, then split off
into a children’s class and an adult class. The split clas-
ses will cover the same topic in different ways. The
class is five Wednesdays, July 12 – August 9. Come to
as many or as few as you can fit into your busy sum-
mer schedules!
Personal Faith Devices (PFDs): If you haven’t start-
ed putting together your PFD, now is the time! This
personalized collection of scripture, quotes, and inspira-
tional thoughts are perfect to flip through as you sit out
by the lake! PFDs are available for assembly in the Nar-
thex.
Finally, this past year, our staff has been working
alongside Rev. Sarah Ciavarri as we’ve explored how
our faith can be enriched by connecting Dr. Brené
Brown’s work on shame and vulnerability with scripture
and spiritual practice. In the spirit of wrapping up, we’d
love to hear from you… how has our engagement with
Wholehearted Living impacted you this past year? A
Wholehearted Living survey will be available online April
30 – May 15, so please share your opinions! Hard cop-
ies will be available at the Information Center as well.
Feedback is critical as we discern our next steps.
I hope to see all of you throughout the summer!
Love in Christ,
Well, we made it through Holy Week. In some ways, it
all feels downhill from here. After all, Easter is sort of
the climax of the story. Christ is risen! Alleluia! And
they all lived happily ever after. Now, in our individual
lives as much as in the life of the church, everyone’s
focus shifts. Spring is here, things are wrapping up, and
we’re busy planning summer schedules and family va-
cations.
Yet, as I’ve been preparing for my sermon this coming
Sunday, I am reminded that Jesus doesn’t just disap-
pear after the resurrection. As he walks with two of his
disciples on the road to Emmaus (unbeknownst to
them), the disciples strongly urge him to stay with
them for the evening. And he does! On this and other
occasions, Jesus stays with his followers, breaks bread
with them, and continues to teach and engage with
them. In the same way, even though Easter’s over and
programs will be wrapping up soon, Jesus remains with
each one of us at Augustana. He doesn’t take summers
off. And thanks be to God for that!
With that in mind, I’d like to remind you of all the dif-
ferent ways for you to stay connected and active in
faith through Augustana this summer!
Summer Worship: Our summer worship schedule be-
gins May 21! Come for outdoor worship at Sibley High
School at 9:00 am or be here in the sanctuary at 10:00
am for indoor worship.
All Congregational Events: In addition to a monthly
Family Fun Night (see the newsletter cover), we’ll also
be taking in a couple of St. Paul Saints games as a
church family! Sign up at the Info Center!

Women’s Intergenerational Event & Dinner

God has gifted us to be in life-giving relationships. Discover the attrib-
utes of developing and nurturing these relationships. How is trust
uniquely built for you? This women’s event will equip us to understand
the relationship between trust and compassion as a way to more fully
show up in our faith. Bringing together Scripture, Lutheran theology,
and the research of Dr. Brené Brown, we will laugh and learn together.
Presenter is Rev. Sarah Ciavarri. Nursery will be provided. The sign-up
deadline (with payment) is Monday, May 1.
BRAVING – The Elements of Trust
Much of what we learned this past year can be summed up in Brené
Brown’s “Anatomy of Trust”
Boundaries—Willingness to say no, respect boundaries, clarifying when
not clear
Reliability—Do what you say you’ll do (requires awareness of personal
competencies and limitations)
Accountability—own mistakes, apologize, make amends
Vault—don’t share information/experiences that are not yours to share
Integrity—choose to practice your values, courage over comfort
Non-judgment—ask for what you need, talk about how you feel with-
out judgment
Generosity—extend the most generous interpretation possible to the
intentions, words and actions of others
Thank you for another exciting program year. Many of you have “dared
greatly,” practiced vulnerability, and worked on gratitude, joy and com-
passion all within the context of your life and faith. I have enjoyed being
on this journey with you. Even though I will not be in the office this sum-
mer please feel free to email me with important news or interesting ideas!

signing up in the binder at the Information Center.
Outdoor Worship Trailer Drivers & Sound Techs
Needed
We are looking for a few people to drive the trailer to
Henry Sibley this summer when Pastor Megan and In-
tern Angela are preaching. Each driver would drive 2-3
times over the summer months. We are also looking
for a few people to help set up the sound at Drive-In
Worship. This is an easy thing to set up and training is
available. Please email [email protected]
if you are willing to help.
Mark your calendars to help at the Habitat job site
in mid to late August right here in West St. Paul! If
construction isn’t your thing, you are welcome to
provide lunch for the crew. Watch for details in up-
coming newsletters and bulletins.
MN Foodshare Results
We challenged you to be wholehearted in your giving.
We challenged you to show up for your hungry neigh-
bors in Dakota County. And you stepped up! Augustana
gave over 23,000 combined pounds and dollars of food.
This is a 10% increase over last year, which was our
biggest giving year yet. We give thanks to God for your
ridiculous generosity.
And because it’s all about the friendly challenge, here’s
how the worship service competition ended up:
8:30 am 43.79 / person
11:00 am 20.20 / person
9:45 am 19.76 / person
But remember: the real winner is our local mission
partner Neighbors Inc. who can now feed more of God’s
beloved in our community.
Summer Meal Program
Every year Neighbors Inc. helps young people get regu-
lar meals when school is out. Volunteers are always
needed to be a friendly face and help serve the food.
No meal prep needed!
This year, they’re doing registration differently. Anyone
is welcome to sign up online for the date, time, and lo-
cation of their choice. Just go to:
https://www.volgistics.com/ex/portal.dll/ap?
ap=603224398
From there, you’ll need to enter your information and
be approved by a background check. Then you can pick
the particular place and time that works best for you.
In addition, Augustana will have a designated week (yet
to be determined) and you are welcome to join other
Augustana members for a day of service together.
Wholehearted Living Survey
For the past nine months, we’ve dared
you to be Wholehearted in the way
you live, love, parent, and lead. Have
you noticed? The staff and leadership
at Augustana would love to hear how you’ve engaged
with our integration of faith, life and the research of
Brené Brown. Please take five minutes and take this
survey online:
https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/
WholeheartedatAugustana
At the end of the first page, you must hit “next” and
then the next page shows you the “submit” button to
finish the survey. The survey will be available from
April 30-May 15. If you prefer, hard copies of the sur-
vey can be found at the Information Center. Your hon-
esty and thoughtfulness help us plan, teach, and share
as we look together to next year. Thanks for your in-
sight!

pm, come early to preview items
Place: Augustana Lutheran Church
Holy Father,
We thank you, dear God, that it is not
fake news when we hear, ‘He is ris-
en!’ Despair has turned into joy; hope-
lessness has turned into hope; dark-
ness has turned into light; doubt has turned into re-
membering; and death has turned into life. Jesus’ res-
urrection has changed everything. The empty Cross
shouts the true Good News for all generations and civi-
lizations. Hosanna! In the name of the One who call
each of us by name. Amen.
Sanctuary Sound System
We’ve made adjustments to the sound system in the
Sanctuary. We believe these adjustments will make a
difference in how worshipers hear and understand the
spoken word. Please provide us with feedback about
the devices’ performance. You are welcome to share
your thoughts with a staff member or a pastor, or write
a comment on the Connection Card and place it in the
offering. Thank you for your help!

May brings us to the end of another wonderful school year. We have had the pleasure of working with
many great children and families; some returning and some new. The Preschool rented Lookout Ridge in
Woodbury to host our families for a fun night of play and conversation. It was a nice way for our fami-
lies to connect in one place with time to socialize and for the children to play together.
Our annual end of the year concerts will be on June 1st and June 2nd. You are welcome to join us at
11:30 am either day, or both days if you wish. It is a nice way to end the school year!
There are still openings for the 2017-2018 school year. Contact [email protected] or call 651-
457-3373 for more information. Thank you for your continued support of Augustana Preschool.
Hoping the April showers will bring you many May flowers!

DEBT RETIREMENT UPDATE
GREAT News!
The building mortgage was down to $135,000 at the end of March. The current one-year Debt Retire-
ment Program ends on May 31. We expect to make significant mortgage payments in May, as members
complete their financial commitments.
Any balance remaining in June will be paid off through a combination of funds applied from the dedicat-
ed mortgage fund (approximately $60,000) plus whatever is needed from the special memorial fund to
complete the mortgage payoff!
Completely paying off the $6 million dollar construction/renovation project in less than 10 years is a
remarkable accomplishment! Thank you to your dedication and faithful giving!
