When Hyundai presented Veracruz, its new crossover, to the world, it wasn’t aiming for favorable comparisons with Toyota’s 7-seat Highlander. No, its goal was to move into luxury territory and best the Lexus RX 350. And that it did, earning the number one slot in Motor Trend’s head-to-head comparison this spring. Tim Bergey, sales consultant at Fred Beans Hyundai in Doylestown, isn’t at all surprised. He and his sales compatriots had a chance to drive the two models on a course and make their own judgments. “One thing we all noticed is how sure- footed the Veracruz is compared to the RX350. Since the Lexus costs $10,000 more, we expected it to handle better. “The 6-speed automatic [Lexus currently uses a 5-speed] is so seamless that you almost don’t notice the transmission shifting. It’s very smooth, very quiet.” The 260-hp V6 ably powers the Veracruz, using regular fuel for an estimated 17/24mpg. ‘Really neat touches’ The Veracruz has third-row seating, which the Lexus lacks, and its middle row reclines and can be moved fore and aft “so everybody’s happy with the legroom.” Everything behind the front seats folds down to provide an amazing amount of cargo space. Intuitive controls front and center surpass the Lexus’ confusing setup, and the cooled center console is convenient for a water bottle or piece of fruit. Bergey appreciates other cool available features, like the proximity key so you can leave the key in your pocket and operate the doors and ignition, and the power lift-gate that operates from the keyless remote. Then there’s the Infinity Logic 7 surround sound system and DVD player options, which can transform a mind-numbing commute or grueling trip. Safety doesn’t take a back seat, either. Among the class leaders in safety, the Veracruz comes standard with six airbags, anti-lock brakes, electronic stability control and electronic brake- force distribution. And active head restraints deliver anti-whiplash protection. “Lexus doesn’t have that,” says Bergey. “In fact, many cars do not have that feature.” Hyundai conscientiousness extends beyond the car and drivers; it’s also the only automotive manufacturer worldwide that meets ISO certification, namely for its Montgomery, Alabama, plant. There’s more to come from Hyundai “The head people at Hyundai realized they had to build a top quality automobile if they were to compete in the United States,” Bergey explains. “They entered into an obsessive quest to increase reliability—and they’ve been winning.” Besides this impressive Motor Trend “win” for the Veracruz, in its April issue Consumer Reports named Hyundai’s Santa Fe and Entourage two of its four “most impressive vehicles” for 2007. Bergey expects more great things from the Korean automaker, and thinks you should, too. Top crossover delivers luxury on Hyundai budget The fact that it costs less is no longer an excuse to buy a Hyundai. It’s just a smart reason. –Motor Trend

Stephen Glass loved his 1987 JettaGLI. But after 20 years and 222,000miles, it was just time. “I was lookingfor something safe and reliable.” Hewas delighted with his experience atFred Beans VW, both for the servicedepartment’s efforts to keep the oldGLI rolling and then with his new2007 Jetta 2.5 purchase. He evenwrote a 3-page letter telling FredBeans about it. “There are few thingsin my life that I’m so satisfied withthat I’d be ebullient.”

And even though he had formerlyscoffed at satellite radio, within weeksof his 3-month trial with the 2.5, hewas sold. “I love it for my commute”into Chester. “I’m what you’d call ahappy, satisfied customer!”

New and exciting for this year isthe 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited with afirst-time-ever four-door design andexpanded interior. It opens up all sortsof possibilities for Jeep enthusiasts andyoung families—and those who fit bothcategories. Now more people can get inon the Jeep adventure.

When the first Jeep rolled off the oldWillys’ assembly line in 1941, no onewas thinking “family car.” Instead, thefirst civilian vehicle with factory-builtfour-wheel drive went off to war, appearing in every theater of World War II.

Across its 60-plus years, Jeep’sreputation, popularity and versatilityhave grown and it has evolved intosleeker, larger, safer—and way morecomfortable—vehicles. But many remainenchanted by the scrappy little militarytrademark whose iconic look ispreserved in today’s Wrangler, whichwas, until now, strictly two-door.

Taking an icon, making it ‘more’“People love this Wrangler four-door,”says David DeFazio, sales manager atFred Beans Dodge Chrysler Jeep SubaruSuzuki. “It’s taking customers with asmall family and turning them intoWrangler customers. The rear seats arecomfortable, offering as much legroomas a Jeep Liberty, and there’s plenty ofcargo space.”

DeFazio’s enthusiasm runs high: “TheJeep Unlimited has become one of the

most versatile and comfortable 5-passenger convertibles you can get.”

This Jeep is a lot safer and has betterhandling than its ancestor, too. Wranglernow offers 2- or 4-door supplementalside airbags, and the new, morepowerful 3.7L V6 engine is narrower,“which improves the turning radiuseven with the longer wheelbase,”

DeFazio says. Different off-roadtechnologies have been added, such asthe front sway bar electronic disconnectto get your Jeep over larger obstacleson rougher terrain.

Fun, fun, funAnd oh, what a lot of electronic fun isstandard or available as add-ons. Forexample, the sound system that comeswith the Unlimited is impressive: the368-watt amp AM/FM stereo featuresseven Infinity speakers sproutingthroughout the cabin, along with in-dash CD player and MP3 capability. Oroption it with a six-disc in-dash stereo.

This Jeep is also one of the few vehiclesthat offer MyGiG, the 20GB hard-drive-

based multimedia infotainment systemwith navigation, satellite radio,Bluetooth cell phone integration androom to store music and photos.

And it’s still a JeepThe 6-speed manual transmission isstandard, but the optional 4-speedautomatic can still take the rough stuffwith surprising ease. The Unlimited isavailable in three models—WranglerUnlimited X, Sahara and Rubicon—andten exterior colors, three wheel sizesand two-wheel or four-wheel drive. And it retains Wrangler’s removable full-framed or half doors, exposed hingesand fold-down windshield.

New for this year is the Freedom Top™,a three-piece modular hardtop roof.Available for 2- or 4-door Wranglers, itgives you options: fully enclosed, openover either or both of the front seats, orwide open to catch the sun andbreezes. Or take along the innovativeSunrider™ soft top for the quickchange.

The reviewers loved the Unlimited’sbest-in-class off-road capability—and itsability to take to the highway nearly aswell. So pick a remote and rocky beachoff the beaten path, load up the gear, the kids and the dog, and head out tomake some fun. This convertible willget you there and back with ease.

All in all, it’s the Jeep you love…butmuch, much better.

High-tech automobiles that can avoid a collision or activelyminimize the risk to occupants if there is one? Weird science or sooner than we think?

Some of these “crash avoidance”and “crash safety” elements arealready available in the newest top-of-the-line luxury vehicles. These include e lane-departure systems that sound

or vibrate a warning when the vehicle drifts out of the lane if noturn signal is used

eelectronic stability control that uses brakes and engine power to keep cars from veering off the road

ebrake power enhancement that prevents or mitigates frontal collisions

eadaptive cruise control with forward-looking radar

eside- and rear-looking radaresteerable headlights that

illuminate curveseover-limit alcohol detection with

ignition lockouteblind spot identificationedrowsy or distracted driver

detectionerear-looking cameras to help

prevent backing accidents

Automakers, suppliers and safetyagencies are moving away from areliance on passive safety—seatbeltsand airbags, for example—towardtechnology that saves lives byavoiding or minimizing the crash inthe first place. At this stage,

however, many of the newtechniques don’t have a trackrecord and there is littleconsistency in how they operatefrom one auto make to another.Bells, chimes, vibrating seats orsteering wheels, flashing lights…an industry standard may be as faraway as the certainty that eachdevice accomplishes what it setsout to do, over time.

And that brings up anotherconcern. When the technology isfully in place, how will humanusers respond? Will they find thewarnings confusing, so they aremore at risk than they were withoutthem? Or will they be sufficientlyannoyed by the interference thatthey ignore the warning or eventurn off the feature?

Or will the new devices makedrivers more reckless orcomplacent, counting on thetechnology to protect them?Remember the old joke about theinexperienced RVer who set thecruise control on his rented motorhome, then got out of his seat tofix himself a sandwich in thekitchenette?

There are a lot of questions still tobe answered, but one fact is clear:we are closer than ever to thatlong-imagined “car of the future.”And one way or another, it will bea safer vehicle.

For several years, we’veprovided passes to the James A.Michener Art Museum inDoylestown to show ourappreciation to those whopurchase vehicles from us. We now hope to “drive traffic”to another cultural gem: thePhilip and Muriel BermanMuseum of Art, located atUrsinus College in Collegeville.Admission to the Berman’sstanding collection and changingexhibits is free, so we’ll providevouchers to new vehicle ownersin the Limerick area entitling thebearer to a small gift from themuseum. Dear Jay Pfeiffer,Just wanted to send you a note of thanksfor the great service you gave me andmy husband during our recent dieselJetta purchase. Having previouslyshopped around for this particular car,we were expecting to walk out of yourdealership unsatisfied. To our surprise, you and your sales manager were ableto give us a great deal. We got exactlywhat we wanted for the price weexpected, and left with additional perksthat were really a nice touch. Thanksagain for making our car buyingexperience a pleasurable one! MyJeep was purchased in Colorado andsubsequently serviced in California andNew York. During that time, no servicemanager has demonstrated a degree ofcompetence, patience and graciousnesseven closely approaching that whichwas provided to me by Mike Riley.Accordingly, I can assure you that mynext Jeep will be purchased from theFred Beans Doylestown Jeep dealership, and the reason therefore is Mike Riley.

Classy Enclave heralded inDoylestownMark Donahue, general manager ofFred Beans Buick Pontiac GMC inDoylestown, likes to make hiscustomers, staff and cars feelspecial. That’s why he threw aparty for the 2008 Enclave in Juneand invited everyone to drop byand see what this handsome newluxury crossover has going for it.Food, gifts and rides in the newCLX were part of the evening.

“The detail is terrific,” says Mark. “It’sa very classy automobile. Buyers aretrading out of imports for this.”

The Enclave you’ll see on theshowroom floor has held onto manyof its concept-car features—availablesunroof and skylight that extendnearly the length of the rear passengercompartment, black chrome waterfallgrill, and signature Buick portholes oneach fender, for example. It providesappealing versatility, too, with front-wheel drive and seating for 7including folding captain’s chairs inthe middle row, or available all-wheeldrive and optional second row 60/40split bench to seat up to 8.

A powerful vehicle with its 275-horseV6, the Enclave delivers a confidentride, relevant technologies, luxuryfeatures, elegant design and a quiet, comfortable interior. It’s a graciousguest-of-honor at parties, too.

GM vehicles are movie heroesA lineup of General Motors vehiclesstars in this summer’s fun-for-all-agesTransformers movie. Now, howdifferent is that? The whole concept isjust quirky enough to warrant aDriving Times exclusive movie reviewfrom Marco Maldonado, servicemanager at Fred Beans Chevrolet:

“I saw the movie last night and forthose who like action-packed movies,or like cars, or grew up playing with‘Transformers,’ it is a must see,” Marcotells us, probably capturing a majorityof the population in those descriptors.“The Camaro [a golden yellowAutobot named Bumblebee] looksHot! Hot! Hot! I highly recommend it.”

Driving Timesponders digital deliveryWhen Driving Times was launched inSpring 2002, we were pretty happy to betransmitting content to the designers atNoble Advertising using what is nowincredibly slow dial-up. Photos werescanned in from 35-mm prints. Andeverything took longer.

What a difference five years has made!Interviews are often conducted via email.Digital cameras at all the stores mean wehave more and better images to illustrateour news and features. The newsletterappears on our website as a PDF you canprint out and read. And production timehas been cut considerably.

At the same time, printing and mailingcosts have skyrocketed…as you all knowfrom your own experiences. And agreater proportion of our customers aretechnologically savvy, some actuallypreferring to receive their news throughelectronic media. Those factors togetherhave us examining how technology canstreamline our communications at alllevels.

So we’re gathering information from you,our customers and readers. How wouldyou like to receive a digital version ofDriving Times? Directly to your email? Asan email announcement with a link tothe website? Something altogetherdifferent? Email your suggestions to us [email protected].

We want to hear your suggestions, whichwill help us plan how best to employ thetechnology that is ever-advancing,making life easier and faster for us all.

Wedo this just as much from a wishto expose as many people aspossible to one of the bestcultural resources in centralBucks County. The Micheneroffers a first-class collection thatdeserves to be seen by residentsas well as visitors to the area.

This way, perhapsmore people will becomefamiliar with the art on displayright in their community.

When Hyundai presentedVeracruz, its new crossover, to theworld, it wasn’t aiming for favorablecomparisons with Toyota’s 7-seatHighlander. No, its goal was to moveinto luxury territory and best the LexusRX 350. And that it did, earning thenumber one slot in Motor Trend’s head-to-head comparison this spring.

Tim Bergey, sales consultant at FredBeans Hyundai in Doylestown, isn’t atall surprised. He and his salescompatriots had a chance to drive thetwo models on a course and make theirown judgments.

“One thing we all noticed is how sure-footed the Veracruz is compared to theRX350. Since the Lexus costs $10,000more, we expected it to handle better.

“The 6-speed automatic [Lexus currentlyuses a 5-speed] is so seamless that youalmost don’t notice the transmissionshifting. It’s very smooth, very quiet.”The 260-hp V6 ably powers theVeracruz, using regular fuel for anestimated 17/24mpg.

‘Really neat touches’The Veracruz has third-row seating, which the Lexus lacks, and its middlerow reclines and can be moved foreand aft “so everybody’s happy with the

legroom.” Everything behind the frontseats folds down to provide an amazingamount of cargo space.

Intuitive controls front and centersurpass the Lexus’ confusing setup, andthe cooled center console is convenientfor a water bottle or piece of fruit.

Bergey appreciates other cool availablefeatures, like the proximity key so youcan leave the key in your pocket and

operate the doors and ignition, and thepower lift-gate that operates from thekeyless remote. Then there’s the InfinityLogic 7 surround sound system andDVD player options, which cantransform a mind-numbing commute orgrueling trip.

Safety doesn’t take a back seat, either.Among the class leaders in safety, theVeracruz comes standard with sixairbags, anti-lock brakes, electronicstability control and electronic brake-force distribution. And active head

restraints deliver anti-whiplashprotection. “Lexus doesn’t have that,”says Bergey. “In fact, many cars do nothave that feature.”

Hyundai conscientiousness extendsbeyond the car and drivers; it’s also the only automotive manufacturerworldwide that meets ISO certification, namely for its Montgomery, Alabama, plant.

There’s more to come from Hyundai“The head people at Hyundai realizedthey had to build a top qualityautomobile if they were to compete inthe United States,” Bergey explains.“They entered into an obsessive questto increase reliability—and they’ve beenwinning.” Besides this impressive MotorTrend “win” for the Veracruz, in itsApril issue Consumer Reports namedHyundai’s Santa Fe and Entourage twoof its four “most impressive vehicles”for 2007.

Bergey expects more great things fromthe Korean automaker, and thinks youshould, too.
