How do children learn a language? How do they learn their very firstwords? Do we as parents play a role inthis process? Do the words we sayinfluence our children’s languagedevelopment?A team of researchers at theUniversity of Edinburgh have beenexploring these questions. Theyuse simple experiments that

monitor children’s eye gaze to helpus understand what information

matters to young infants in the early stages of word learning. In these studies, young toddlers and their parents are invitedto ELfLanD (Edinburgh Laboratory for LanguageDevelopment), a new research lab located at 7 GeorgeSquare for a short 30-minute session. During theexperiment, which takes only about 5 minutes, children siton their parents’ lap and view short child-friendly videos. Theresearchers then analyze the looking patterns of all childrento see what it is that toddlers pay attention to when theylearn a new word. The project is currently launching its longitudinal study. Inthis study the researchers are interested in the relationshipbetween the language children hear from theirparents/carers and the language they acquire. Participantsrecord conversations between themselves and their childwhen their child is 9, 15 and 21 months old. They alsocomplete questionnaires describing their child’s languageacquisition. At the end of each session, the parents arerewarded with high street vouchers, but they also receive acopy of the questionnaire about their child’s languagedevelopment so they can remember in years to come whattheir child could say at various developmental stages. If you are interested in learning more about ELfLanD orif you would like to participate in the studies, you cancheck their website (http://www.ppls.ed.ac.uk/elfland/)or email [email protected]. If you want to volunteer forthe longitudinal study, you can email Nicola Davies [email protected].

HELPINg CHILDREN LEARN mORE EASILYHelping children developphysically, academically, socially, and emotionally throughmovement, balance and rhythm isfundamental and should be a partof every child’s life. The basicphysical skills such as throwing, catching, walking balance beams, skipping, are an integral part of our

balance and rhythm capabilities. Many parents and teachers will remember that in ‘our day’ these playground activitieswere the norm. Nowadays, many children spend much of their free time in front of TV screens, playing computergames, with minimal physical activity. For our children to have healthy, strong brains and bodies, daily physical activitysuch as walking, swimming, cycling, trampolining, skipping, ball skills are beneficial for developing stronger neuralconnections in the brain. Learning differences such as dyslexia, dyspraxia (DCD), dyscalculia, dysgraphia, ASD, ADHDaffects 10% - 15% of the UK population with 4% seriously affected (statistics from BDA). The effects of having alearning difference may lead to loss of self-confidence, depression and feelings of failure.Jane Oliver at Brightbrain Scotland helps children and adults to develop focus, attention skills, self-esteem, reading, writing, maths, speech & language, memory and organisational skills through the Bal-A-Vis-X programme, rhythmicBalance, Auditory, Vision, eXercises. A fun programme designed for everyone, at school, home or the workplace, Bal-A-Vis-X will create a buzz! The group trained for 18 months prior to embarking on this ventureincluding taking part in a practice expedition to Borrowdale in the English Lake Districtin March in temperatures (in the valley of -10°C). The annual round of Open Days atEdinburgh’s independent schools –when the schools throw open their doorsand welcome visitors – is reaching itsend for another year. But visitors are, ofcourse, welcome at other times during

the school year, to see the schools "at work". Clare is the owner of Downes Opticians in Leith whereboth her and Linda are Optometrists.Clare is mum to Harrison (18 months) and Linda is mumto Ciara (31⁄2) and Connor (2). Both live with their familiesin North Edinburgh and we’re delighted to share their gemsof local knowledge with you.

Parent2ParentFavourite shop: Clare: Treehouse in Stockbridge is a great wee independent children's shop, with lots ofchoice and also provide a children's hairdressing service I haven't quite been brave enough to use (nothing to do with them!)

Linda: Ginger Lily on South Trinty road for last minute presents and cards. They are so friendly and patient with sticky fingers.

Favourite park: Clare: It has to be Inverleith with the play park, the ducks, the views, loads of room to kickfootballs and the abundance of doggies, it provides endless entertainment.

Linda: Victoria Park because we always run into someone we know..

Favourite children's club/class: Clare: Council run swimming classes, we use the one at Glenogleas we can walk there. Harrison's confidence in the water has improved greatly and who doesn't like splashing aroundto nursery rhymes.

Linda: Trinity Toddlers. It is so relaxed and gives me a great chance to chat about any toddler conundrums. We’ve madebrilliant friends there over the years!

Favourite day out: Clare: Ooh this is a tricky one, as we are members of the Zoo we are there an awfullot, favourites being the penguins and the chimps. However I am looking forward to Harrison being a little older so wecan take full advantage of East Links farm park, we love it there too.

Linda: Edinburgh Zoo because we have an annual pass, as do a lot of our friends, so it is a great place to meet up andthere is so much to do that we never get bored.

Favourite child friendly restaurant: Clare:We love La Piazza on Shandwick Place, the foodis yummy and in true Italian style all the staff are super child friendly.

Linda: The Orchard at Canon Mills because they always make you feel welcome and genuinely enjoy their youngest guests.

Proudest Eco - friendly moment: Clare: Recycling old spectacles for the third world. I workwith the charity Vision Aid Overseas, where we go to the poorest countries in the world providing eye examinations andspectacles free of charge. These countries do not have accessibility to eye care so we can make a huge difference toeach individual. We collect spectacles all year round so get all your old spectacles and drop them into the practice.

Linda: I have started recycling in the last few months and I love the fact that the children are up for it too! I think theproudest point was when my husband was convinced too!

Best planet saving tip: Clare: Recycle everything you possibly can, including clothing etc. Just a littleeffort from each of us can make a significant difference.

Linda: Simple - recycle!

No parent should be without: Clare:Wine (!) or Baby wipes.Linda: Good friends and a reliable babysitter for when you need to be just you again.

Parenting pet hates: Clare: Spending ages creating a nutritious toddler meal from scratch only to haveit rejected without even tasting it, Grrr!

Linda: It has to be running late; I always try to fit too much in.

Parenting high points: Clare: Laughing out loud everyday, I do not remember laughing everyday beforeHarrison arrived.

Linda:When they are happy, and even better behaving well, it makes you think you are doing okay after all.

Most embarrassing moment: Clare: My flip flop breaking beyond repair whilst playing atInverleith Park which resulted in me having to walk through Stockbridge barefooted to buy a replacement pair, thankThe Lord for the abundance of charity shops!

Linda: In Pizza express on the way for a nappy change my 2 year old lay down and his nappy leaked on Pizza Express’floor and I was frantically trying to clean it up whilst holding on to him keeping him up right.

Funniest comment: Clare: A friends daughter once said in the park, quite loudly, "mummy, why does thatwoman have a moustache?"... Awkward!

Linda:We were talking about the teachers at nursery and my 3.5 year old asked me if Clare was my teacher!

Favourite family holiday spot: Clare: Bamburgh inNorthumberland. Only a short distance away yet the beach and the backdrop of thecastle is just breathtaking. There is also lots to do in Northumberland even if the weatherisn't great.

Linda:We often go up to Dunblane hydro for a night, really just to use the pool and so Idon’t have to cook and clean up.

Best children's book: Clare: For Harrison's age (18 months) we loveRoom on the Broom or The Gruffalo (of course).

Linda: The Gruffalo!

Best DVD: Clare: Harrison is a bit young for these yet but looking forwardto the time when we can snuggle on the couch on a rainy day.

Linda: Room on a broom. We are Julia Donaldson fans!

Most played with toys: Clare: All we need in our house is collection ofballs, he is football and rugby mad but he also likes anything by happyland.

Linda:Matching buggies, they each have one and love to load them up with as much aspossible and spin around the house playing.

Biggest waste of money: Clare: A sit in baby walker, which Harrisonhardly used, he much preferred his push along one.

Linda: Rushing to buy a leotard and ballet shoes only for my daughter to decide shedidn’t want to go anymore! So I gave them away then less than a year later she hasstarted again and loves it! Back to the shop we go!

Why you like living where you do: Clare:We are only a shortwalk from Inverleith park, the Botanics and Stockbridge so we very lucky to haveeverything on our doorstep, I just love it! The car barely gets moved these days. And when there is the odd Mummy and Daddy night out, there are plenty of nicerestaurants and bars in walking distance.

Linda: This area has such a strong community especially amongst young families, thereis plenty to do with young children, you never get bored.

One of my daughters is disgruntled. I am, she says, a bad mother. “Other mums support their children,” shesays. “When they have a problem, the mums go into school to talk to the teachers. You never do that.”

She’s not entirely correct; I’ve had children at school for the last 15 years or so, and there might have been oneor two occasions when I’ve gone in to talk to a teacher or a head outside of parent-teacher meetings. But I couldcertainly count those times on the fingers of one hand; and, thinking about it, probably even on one finger.

I hope I’m not a bad mother; and I know there are some problems – and bullying is foremost among them – whena meeting with a teacher has to be arranged, and fast. But bullying apart, I believe that my daughters are betterhelped if I hang back from making appointments, and arm them instead to negotiate their own issues, and fighttheir own battles, at school.

Why so? Well, the raison d’etre of parenting is to make your child independent: and it seems to me that if I wadein at every opportunity to smooth my child’s path in life, I’m not helping her to learn to do it for herself. And whatmessage does it give if, when she tells me about a problem she’s experiencing, my response is to say ‘I’ll comein to talk to your teacher about that’?

Let themfight theirown battlesBy Joanna Moorhead

What it says is: you can’t sort this out for yourself; you’re not smart enough or capableenough or eloquent enough. You can’t do it, but I can. And that doesn’t help mydaughter develop those skills, and it doesn’t help her become experienced andconfident at learning to problem-solve for herself.

Sometimes, over the years, my daughters’ problems have been significant ones – andcertainly many of them have seemed significant to my daughters, even if they didn’tseem all that important to me. On at least one occasion, the problem has been aclash between them and a teacher, and listening to the story it’s been difficult not toagree that, yes, it sounded as though the teacher was in the wrong.

But this is what I tell my daughters: teachers are only human. Teachers, like everyoneelse in the world, have some people they like better than others. So of course it’spossible that a teacher might not favour you, might even pick on you, because he orshe doesn’t like you. And, yes, of course it’s a terrible shame if you end up with anunfriendly-seeming teacher in a subject you really love.

But rather than race in to school to have it out with the teacher, I tell my daughter tofind a way of dealing with it; and if possible, I help her work out what that might be.Could she start the ball rolling on building a better relationship with the teacher inquestion by being nicer to her, or by working harder in the subject, or by making morecontributions in class? Because the truth is that, all through life, there will beindividuals who will seem to stand in the way of what we want – and learning to workwith these people, or round them, is a hugely important life skill.

Talking to your child about what’s going on will also help her process her own feelings;and again, this is an important learning curve. Help your child see that it’s not thecase that someone has got it in for her, but maybe just that the teacher or the otherchild has issues in their own life. And instead of encouraging your child into negativefeelings (“that teacher/child has always been a total pain, I’ve been saying it foryears”) turn things round into something positive (“everyone has bad days; whatcould you do tomorrow that could start to improve this relationship?”).

Similarly problems with other children: I long ago made a resolution never, ever to getinvolved at parental level over my daughters’ squabbles. Not only is life far too short, but more importantly, learning to get on with their peers is what childhood andadolescence is for.

None of this means, by the way, that I’m abdicating responsibility for how my girlsbehave. It’s just that talking to other adults isn’t how I believe my offspring will learnto treat others well; that comes, I think, from modelling what I hope are goodrelationships in my own life, and in listening to the issues they have in their lives (whenthey want to talk about them) and helping them find a way of dealing with them.

So it’s really important to make time to listen when they’re experiencing problems atschool; and it’s crucial to validate how they’re feeling, to reflect back that I understandtheir worries and can see that it’s a genuine issue. But what should happen next isfar more about equipping them to go back into school and work out how to put theproblematic relationship on track, than it is about grabbing your coat and racing in totry to solve the difficulties yourself.

NO MORE ANTIBIOTICS“ it’s made a huge difference to our son’s life.” Chris’ MumAsthma can develop at any age. One in 11 children has asthma and it is themost common long-term medical condition. Asthma causes periodic attacks ofwheezing and difficulty in breathing. Periodic attacks are caused by an oversensitivity of the lungs and airways, which overreact to certain “triggers” andbecome inflamed and clogged. Salt therapy is a clinically proven, 100% natural and safe therapy which helpsto prevent and alleviate the symptoms of Asthma.

• 85 - 95% of children become symptom-free after just a few sessions.• This effect is long term• After 10 - 12 months regular medication has been reduced by 65 -75%• The treatment definitely improves children’s quality of life.

Salt therapy focuses on the source of the problem rather than just suppressing the symptoms. It has alreadyhelped thousands of children and adults suffering from Asthma, Eczema, Hay Fever, Sinusitis, COPD,Bronchiectasis, Bronchitis, Cough, Cystic Fibrosis and other respiratory illnesses.Salt is a natural antihistamine, antiviral and antibacterial, so being able to inhale such fine particles into theentire respiratory system helps relieve any inflammation, breaks upmucus and relieves congestion. Children can play here and they willnot even realize that they are under treatment! The Salt Cave, Meadowbank, Edinburgh, is open 7 days a week, and your first session is free!0131 510 1091 www.saltcave.co.uk

Jenny is a midwife based in Edinburgh and mother to four sons. “Through my work with families, I have become aware ofthe great need for many of us to find balance amongst the stresses and traumas we face within our lives and work. I was introducedto Capacitar almost a year ago and have been using it in my life to great benefit”.Capacitar is a grassroots, popular education process - not a therapy. It puts the skills in your hands for your own use in your dailylife. It is a Spanish word meaning “to empower, to encourage, to bring one another to life”. Although it has been growing anddeveloping over the last 25 years across many countries it only arrived in Scotland 2 years ago.Evidence shows that Capacitar practices reduce stress, anxiety, trauma, negative thoughts and memories, while building resilience. It enables you to develop practical skills to improve your emotional and physical wellbeing and live a healthier life. Through simple practices which encourage healing of body, mind and spirit and self resilience, Capacitar creates the opportunity tonurture ourselves, while listening and responding to the deeper wisdom we all hold inside. This can transform our lives and those ofour friends and families.

Jenny is offering special workshops and sessions in December at Knotstressed in Blenheim Place, Edinburgh. These sessionsprovide time out in a nurturing, safe environment, with a background of relaxing and soothing music. You can unwind and relax while discovering very simple ways to help keep you calm and resilient during the preparation forChristmas and over the Christmas period. For more information contact [email protected] Or visit www.knotstressed.com

Tips to a simple and stress free Christmas • De-clutter - Get the kids to help clean their rooms. Give them abox/bag labelled ‘charity’ and one with ‘bin’ for any brokentoys/rubbish. Remind them they are making space for new toys andyou’ll get a result! (It goes without saying you’ll need to check the bags!)

• Plan - with all the Christmas parties and extra activities, make sureyour family calendar is kept up to date to avoid clashes. Don’t feelobligated to fit everything in because it can be a recipe for melt down!Do make sure you keep some regular ‘chill out’ time for everyone torecharge their batteries.

• Sleep - towards the end of the year and over winter we can all get abit run down. ‘Cranky kids’ on Christmas Day can make a special dayless special, so as tempting as it is to let children stay up late and enjoypre-festive activities, maintaining the regular night time routine has itsbenefits.

For more tips and advice on de-cluttering before Christmas take alook at my ‘30 bags in 30 days’ challenge with some simple andpractical tips to removing clutter.‘Simple Living’ provides bespoke practical support and advice inall areas of your home from de-cluttering to home improvementprojects. Christmas is coming! - Does this fill you with joy or anxiety? Maybe a mixture of both? Christmas can be a very specialtime, whether we focus on the spiritual, religious experience or the social, family one. However, for some of us

Christmas can be very stressful, evoking painful memories and experiences. The expectations we carry at this time can beoverwhelming, both physically and emotionally as we strive to keep up with the organisational demands and fulfil the hopesand dreams often associated with this season. How can we journey through the weeks prior to Christmas and remainpeaceful and hopeful rather than flustered and drained?
