The Robert Morris University Island Sports Centeris the region’s premier sports and recreationdestination, located just nine miles from

downtown Pittsburgh on the western tip of NevilleIsland. The facility and its programs serve both Robert Morris University and the regional community.Its 32-acre campus includes two indoor ice arenas andtwo outdoor multi-purpose rinks, as well as an indoorgolf driving range and Sports Dome, athletic fields andtrack, miniature golf course, fitness center, massagetherapy, batting cages, pro shop and bistro.

Our state of-the-art center, which opened in 1998,has been the site of such high-profile events as theJunior Olympic Figure Skating Championship, theNational Short Track Speed Skating Championships,the USA Hockey National Tier I Championships, the2005 World Street Hockey Championships and the2006 TropiCurl Curling Tournament. The collegiate icerink serves as home to the RMU men’s and women’sNCAA Division I ice hockey teams, while the outdoorfields and eight-lane track are home to theUniversity’s men’s and women’s outdoor track andfield teams.

Dave Hanson, General ManagerKnown for his role as one of the “Hanson Brothers” inthe movies Slap Shot andSlap Shot 2, Dave Hansonis one of the most accomplished and respected hockeyprofessionals in theindustry. Having playedprofessionally in the NHL,AHL and WHA, Dave is a former pro hockey generalmanager and has more than 20 years of coaching and sportmanagement experience.

Robert Morris University, founded in 1921, is oneof the leading universities in the Pittsburghregion and among the largest private

institutions of higher learning in Pennsylvania. More than 5,000 full- and part-time undergraduateand graduate students from 32 states and 31countries are enrolled at RMU.

The 230-acre campus in Moon Township is located15 minutes from Pittsburgh International Airport and17 miles from downtown. The Center for Adult andContinuing Education is located in the heart of thecity, among the nation’s seventh largest concentrationof Fortune 500 corporate headquarters. The 32-acreIsland Sports Center on Neville Island provides state-of-the-art athletic facilities for the Universityand the community.

RMU built its reputation by offering strongacademic programs in traditional business fields suchas accounting, finance, marketing and management.To prepare students for success in a changing andcompetitive workforce, the University has createdprograms in communications, information systems,engineering, mathematics, science, education, social sciences and nursing in the past decade. TheUniversity now offers 30 bachelor’s degree programsand 18 master’s and doctoral degree programs.

RMU is a teaching-centered institution, featuringsmall classes taught by faculty members. The student-faculty ratio is 16:1, and the average class size is 24.

More than 60 clubs and organizations help studentsdevelop leadership skills, network professionally andmeet new friends. Student activities include varsity,club and intramural sports, sororities, fraternities andstudent government. HockeyYOUTH ICE HOCKEYPROGRAMS

Learn to Play HockeyAges 4-10 • Year-Round

Learn to Play Hockey classes provide children theopportunity to learn the basics of skating and hockeyfrom USA Hockey-trained instructors in a fun-to-learn,relaxed, noncompetitive atmosphere. No skating orhockey experience is required. All players must beregistered with USA Hockey for 2006-07.

Each class includes 40 minutes of skating and stickinstruction and a 10-minute hockey game. Uponcompletion of the classes, players are ready to jointhe RMU ISC Island Colonials and enjoy playing withchildren of similar age and ability. Most sessionsbegin with a free clinic.

■ Pre-Hockey/Learn to SkateA structured lesson plan provides a strong foundationof skating know-how and confidence building. Skillsinclude stance, walking, T-push, two-foot glide,scooting, O's, preparing for snowplow stop,backwards stance and walking.

■ Hockey IEach week includes a review of skills learned in Pre-Hockey/Learn to Skate and the introduction ofnew skills such as snowplow stop, one-foot glides,backward O's and forward strides. From this solidbase, the fundamental skills of skating, stick handling,passing and shooting can be properly taught.

■ Hockey IIEach week includes a review of skills learned inHockey I and the introduction of new skills such as V-start, stationary and moving stick handling, open ice carry, forehand and backhand passing andreceiving, turning, use of feet to control puck and stopping with the puck.

Island Colonials Youth House LeagueAges 4-14 • October–March

This league teaches children the fundamentals of icehockey and basic concepts of team play. Programsare offered at the Mini Mite, Major Mite, Squirt andPee Wee/Bantam levels. Players must have skated inthe Learn to Play Hockey program and passed HockeyII (or the equivalent at another rink), or participated in a recreational or competitive house leagueprogram. All players must be registered with USA Hockey for 2006-07.

Fees include nearly 50 hours of ice time over 20weekends, an end-of-the-year party, holiday party and a parents and kids game. Each player receives a jersey with name and number, matching socks, an individual participant trophy and five stick time passes.

■ Mini Mite ProgramA maximum of four teams of 10 players have a jointpractice run as a clinic by the coaches. Duringpractices, the individual skills of skating, passing,stick handling and shooting are emphasized. Gamesare played half-ice.

■ Major Mite Through Bantam ProgramsTeams consist of 15 players at the Major Mite leveland 16 at the Squirt and Pee Wee/Bantam levels.Teams have approximately 14 games and 22 on-ice practices.

■ SchedulePlay runs from the weekend of Sept. 30–Oct. 1through March 10–11. Mini Mites and Major Mitesplay all games at the RMU Island Sports Center.Squirts and Pee Wee/Bantam teams playapproximately eight away games at nearby rinks.Roughly two-thirds of home ice slots are played onthe Open Air Rink. Squirts and Pee Wee/Bantams mayplay up to two Friday evening slots. Away games arealmost exclusively on the weekend and during theopponent’s scheduled ice slots.

3-ON-3 Full-Ice Summer Hockey LeagueMay–July

Exciting and explosive, 3-ON-3 helps kids to practicethe fundamentals of hockey while experimenting withan innovative, pace-motivated style of play. 3-ON-3features nonstop hockey action with no icing, nooffsides, no checking and only two stoppages of play.

You may register as an individual or a team. Amaximum of 90 teams will be accepted. Eleven gamesare guaranteed: 10 games plus all teams make theplayoffs. Games are played on weeknights andweekends. Games consist of two 15-minute and one12-minute running-time periods.

■ Age LevelsPlayers skate the age level for 2007-08 according to USA Hockey birthday requirements.

This league promotes friendly yet competitive hockeygames and very few penalties. Players may register asan individual or with a friend.

■ 30 and Older DivisionFall and winter sessions consist of eight teams of 15skaters and a goalie and the summer session consistsof six teams. A total of 15 games are possible: 12games plus all teams make the playoffs.

■ 40 and Older DivisionFour teams of 15 skaters and a goalie are accepted forplay. A total of 14 games are possible: 12 games plusall teams make the playoffs.

Players 40 and older may play in both divisions.

■ ScheduleThe 30 and Older Division plays Monday throughWednesday evenings. The 40 and Older Division plays Thursday evenings.

WOMEN’S ICE HOCKEY PROGRAMS

Learn to Play Hockey for Women (Ice Maidens)High School and Up • Fall/Winter/Spring

This program teaches the basics of hockey to womenwho are beginners or recreational skaters. Because of the growth of the program, we have added anintermediate level of instruction as well. Each group receives 50 minutes of instruction per week for 10 weeks.

Players start in the beginner level and advance tothe intermediate level. Instruction at the beginnerlevel focuses on the basics of skating and stick skills.Team play concepts are introduced to intermediate-level players, and we hope to schedule one or twogames per session. Please note these games includean additional fee.

The program is instructed by Cara Jones, captain ofthe 2001 RPI women’s hockey team and a member ofthe Central Pittsburgh Senior Women’s Team, whichwon the 2006 Pennsylvania-Ohio Women’s HockeyAssociation Championship.

The region’s premier holiday ice hockey tournamentfor AA, A (Major and Minor) and B teams at the Mite,Squirt, Pee Wee and Bantam levels! The tournamentdraws 64 of the most talented teams from Pennsylvania,Ohio, West Virginia and New York. Age levels arebased on 2006-07 USA Hockey requirements.

Games feature three 12-minute stop-time periods.Teams play three games, and the top two teams ineach division advance to the championship. Weguarantee that 50 percent of teams will play in a championship game!

Ice Hockey Iron Man Tournament: Only the Strong SurviveMarch 31–April 1, 2007

A day of nonstop hockey action for teams at the Mite,Squirt, Pee Wee, Bantam, Midget and Adult levels.Games are 4-on-4 plus goalies and consist of a 12-minute, running-time period. All games are played in one day. A total of five games arepossible: each team plays three round-robin gamesand four teams advance to the playoffs. Rosters arelimited to six skaters and one goalie. Goalies may playon more than one team per level. Age levels arebased upon 2006-07 USA Hockey requirements.

YOUTH INLINE HOCKEY PROGRAMS

Learn to Skate and Play InLine HockeyAges 6-13 • Year-Round

This program gives children the opportunity to learnthe basics of skating and InLine hockey in a fun-to-learn and structured environment. Children are dividedinto groups according to age and skill. Each weeklyclass consists of 35 minutes of skating and stick skillinstruction and a 10-minute game. Upon competitionof the classes, children can join the Rollin' ColonialsYouth House League and enjoy playing withyoungsters of similar age and ability. Each session begins with a free clinic.

Rollin' Colonials Youth House LeagueAges 7-14 • Year-Round

This league stresses individual skills integrated with team play to provide an enjoyable and non-competitive learning environment. The first three weeks feature practice and a rating session. The remaining seven weeks feature controlledscrimmages and games.

Teams are formed at two different age levels: 7-10 and 11-14. Games are 4-on-4 plus goalie, using apuck. There is no offsides or icing. A maximum of 13players are placed on each team. The parity system isused to ensure children of the same age and abilityare on the court.

Skating School programs provide skaters ages 3through adult with the basic skills necessary to skatesafely and competently, whether for figure skating, ice hockey or recreation. Students learn the basicelements of ice skating and develop a sense ofcoordination and balance on the ice.

Balance, forward and backward skating, stopping,turning and edges are taught at the different skilllevels. This class provides the building blocks foradvancement in each of the ISI Skill Levels, which are necessary for more advanced disciplines such asice hockey and figure skating. Skaters will be dividedinto two levels based on age and skill level, and class times will vary by level. No previous skatingexperience is necessary. Students must attend the same class day and time throughout the program series.

Private instruction is available for those interested in recreational skating or in developing the skills to be a figure skater or hockey player. All staffinstructors are qualified and experienced professionalsthat offer all levels of skating instruction based onindividual goals. Lessons are offered to beginnerthrough advanced levels, for recreational ice skating,figure skating or basic hockey skills.

Rates range from $15 to $36 per 30-minute lesson;rates are determined by the instructor’s individualachievements, coaching accomplishments and yearsof experience. Instructor fees are paid directly to theinstructor, and all appropriate session fees and skaterental fees must be paid at Guest Services beforegoing onto the ice for a private lesson.

FIGURE SKATINGACADEMY (FSA)

The RMU Island Sports Center Figure SkatingAcademy (FSA) was established to promote thedevelopment and enjoyment of the sport of figureskating. The FSA is designed for skaters of all levels who are members of U.S. Figure Skating or Ice Skating Institute (ISI) and who are interested infurthering the development of their skills forcompetitive or recreational figure skating.

In addition to individualized training, the FSAencourages individual skaters to participate in groupactivities, such as figure skating classes, shows and competitions, to enhance skills and developsportsmanship while enjoying a sense of camaraderiein a fun and energetic skating atmosphere. The FSAis dedicated to meet the needs of all skaters, from the first-time competitor to skaters at the highestlevel of competition.

FSA INSTRUCTIONAL CLASSES

FSA instructional classes provide a fun and safeskating experience and promote physical fitness in a group atmosphere. Classes are offered to ISI or U.S. Figure Skating skaters from beginner throughadvanced. Students are divided into three groupsbased on figure skating level and experience. Skaters do not have to be FSA members to participate in instructional classes.

The skating director reserves the right to adjust a skater’s class placement. Supplemental privateskating instruction is required and necessary toaccelerate progress and focus on individual skating needs.

Stroking Workshop Year-Round

SYNCHRONIZED SKATING

Synchronized Skating Teams

In 2004, the Steel City Blades synchronized skatingteams were started at RMU Island Sports Center. Thethree teams – youth, teen and adult – meet one to twotimes per week and train for synchronized skatingcompetitions, as well as local shows and performances.The teams are coached by national synchronizedskating coach Jeff Marshall, Marsha Snyder, a worldand national synchronized skating competitor withMiami University of Ohio, and the RMU ISC figureskating staff.

Synchronized skating is the fastest growingdiscipline of figure skating. Last year more than 2,500skaters participated at the regional level of singlescompetition, while nearly 6,000 skaters competed atthe sectional level of synchronized skating. Currently,the U.S. is fourth in the world and training the youngestskaters for the 2010 Olympics. Synchronized skating isa great way to develop your singles skating skills in ateam environment!

Skaters must be atleast at the ISI Freestyle 1 or U.S. Figure Skating Pre-Preliminary Field Move or Freestyle levels to try out for the Steel City Blades.

Synchronized Skating Developmental Program

Synchronized skating consists of 12-20 skaters skatingon ice at one time moving as one flowing unit. Theteam performs a program set to music, often withrequired elements which include circles, lines, blocks,wheels and intersections at the most basic level.

This program is designed for skaters who areinterested in learning the basic of synchronizedskating and the skills necessary to join a synchronizedskating team. No obligation to join a team, this is afun “try-it” class.

(Gamma or Delta levels) or receiving private skating instruction

This all-inclusive program features a full scheduleof freestyle, field moves and ice dance sessions, anon-ice specialty class, off-ice conditioning and danceclasses, and a Summer Skating Exhibition. Skatersmay choose from several ice packages created tomeet their individualized training needs.

The RMU Island Sports Center also will host a U.S.Figure Skating test session and the Skate PittsburghU.S. Figure Skating competition, both sponsored bythe Pittsburgh Figure Skating Club.

PRIVATE FIGURE SKATING INSTRUCTION

Private instruction is available for those interested inrecreational or competitive figure skating. Our first-rate staff of instructors includes an Olympic champion,Olympic competitors, national-level coaches and U.S.Figure Skating gold medalists. The staff provides alllevels of instruction based on individual goals, frombeginner through advanced levels.

Rates range from $15 to $36 per 30-minute lesson;rates are determined by the instructor’s individual figureskating achievements, coaching accomplishments andyears of experience. Instructor fees are paid directly to the instructor, and all appropriate session and skate rental fees must be paid at Guest Servicesbefore going onto the ice for a private lesson.

Island Strength is a sport-specific strength andconditioning program designed to help seriousathletes reach and surpass their true potential. Island Strength caters to the specific needs of eachathlete, helping to maximize performance variableswhile assisting in injury prevention.

Sports Dome Programs

DODGEBALL

High school ages and up. Tournaments are heldmonthly. Matches consist of 10-person teams and four balls on the field in a best-of-three format.Matches are organized in round-robin format toqualify for single-elimination playoffs.

Team Fee: $100

SOFTBALL

Men’s All-Night Indoor TournamentsOne tournament per month is held November throughApril. There are 16 teams per tournament with threegames per night guaranteed. One-pitch, five-inninggames are played in a round-robin format. Champions receive a trophy.

“NEVILLE DEVILS”FLAG FOOTBALL

Leagues are offered for Little Devils (ages 6-8),Demons (9-11) and Devils (12-14). All leagues run onTuesday evenings from October through December and also March through May (7 weeks).

Fee: $85 per person (jersey fee $20)

SOCCER

Men's LeagueWednesday nights starting at 8:45 p.m.; games mayalso begin at 9:40 and 10:35, depending on thenumber of teams. Play is 6-on-6 with a keeper,change on the fly.

Team Fee: $800 per nine-week session + $15 per week referee fee

CANINE AGILITY TRIALS

Clubs from all over the country run their championdogs through obstacle courses in our club-sponsoredtrials. Spectators are welcome. Rentals are subject toavailability.

FACILITY RENTALS

Sports DomeThe climate-controlled Sports Dome is available for hourly rental before and after golf hours year-round. The surface is covered with FieldTurf, arevolutionary surface consisting of two-inch nylongrass filled and supported by pulverized rubber andsand. The Sports Dome has been used for softball,lacrosse, baseball, flag football, workout sessions,gymnastics and cheerleading competitions, corporate Olympics and sleepovers.

Ice Rinks The ice rinks are colorful, bright, comfortable, cleanand well maintained. The premium ice surfaces areproduced by a state-of-the-art Jet Ice water system.The rinks can be used for hockey, figure skating,speed skating, general ice skating, and activities suchas curling and broomball.

Two indoor rinks are available year-round. TheCollegiate Rink is the same size as a regulation NHL ice surface (85' x 200') with numerousgrandstands seating as many as 1,200 spectators. The Olympic Rink is larger (100' x 200') and has ice-level bleachers that seat up to 300 spectators. Oneoutdoor rink (the Open Air Rink) is also available from October through March.

Multi-Sport Courts These two hockey rink-sized facilities have a multi-sport court surface that can be used for inline skating,volleyball, basketball, soccer, lacrosse, dek hockey and more. These rinks are located in the Open AirComplex, which is covered but provides a greatoutdoor feel.

Track and FieldOur state-of-the-art track and field, located behind theSports Dome, is a sight to behold. The infield is anadult regulation soccer field and is also lined formen’s and women’s lacrosse. The eight-lane track isan NCAA-regulation, 400-meter rubberized surfaceand is perfect for high school or collegiate events,including shotput, javelin, hammer, discus, triple jump,pole vault and steeplechase. Both areas are availablefor rent for practices, games or meets. Event ratesvary depending on length and type of activity.
