    Dontusethisequipmentifyouareworkingnearhighvoltagepowerlinesorotherenergizedelectricalequipment.

    Dontuseoiltolubricatemovingparts.Iflubricationisneeded,firstbesuretocleanallmovingpartsthoroughly;thenuseonly100%siliconelubricant.

    DontusethisdeviceifitwillexposesomeelementofyourPersonalFallArrestsystem(PFAS)tosharporjaggededges.

    andreplaced.

    Productselection

    an

    element

    of

    fall

    protection.

    Fall

    Arrest

    products

    arelikeanyothertoolsthatyoumayuseinthecourseofyourworkthereisapropertoolforeveryapplication. Youmayfindthatwhilethisproductissuitableforsomeapplications,itmaynotbesuitableforothers. Pleasebesuretopaycloseattentiontosections2,3,and4,forgreaterdetailonthispoint.

    Advisory#3: ConnectorCompatibilityMakingcompatibleconnectionsmaymeanthedifferencebetweenlifeanddeath.

    Connectors(snaphooks,rebarhooksandcarabiners),mustbeofthelockingtypeandrequiretwodistinctactionstoopenthegate. Yourconnectorsmustbesizedand

    shapedso

    that

    the

    rings

    or

    structural

    members

    to

    which

    they

    are

    attached

    will

    not

    poseariskofforcingthegateopen,andmustfullycaptivatetheconnectorsothatitcannotbecomedisengaged,slideorshiftduringuseorintheeventofafall.

    Certainconnectionsareforbiddenandshouldneverbeattemptedwiththisproductoranyotherunlessthereisaspecificallowanceinthemanufacturersinstructions.Forbiddenconnectionsinclude,butarenotlimitedto:

    Twoormoreconnectorstoonedringareaforbiddenconnection. Aconnectionthatrestsonorloadsthegateisaforbiddenconnection. Aconnectionthatdoesnotallowthegatetocloseandlockisaforbidden

    connection.

    Twoormoreconnectorsattachedtooneanotherareaforbiddenconnection.

    Connectingdirectlytowebbing,rope,cable(wirerope)isaforbiddenconnection.

    Connectingdirectlytoahorizontallifelineisaforbiddenconnection. TiebackwithyourFallTechSALisaforbiddenconnectionexceptformodel#

    Connectingtoanyringorstructurethatdoesnotfullycaptivateandcompletely

    restrict

    the

    movement

    your

    connector

    Itisabsolutelycriticalthatyoubefamiliarwiththeproperwearand/oruseofeachcomponentofyourPersonalFallArrestSystem(PFAS). Failuretoread,understandandadheretoinstructionalmaterialsandwarningsprovidedwitheachofthesecomponentscouldleadtoacatastrophicfailureofyourPFAS,resultinginseriousinjuryordeath.2.1: Anchorage

    designed,installed,andusedasfollows: aspartofacompletepersonalfallarrest

    systemwhichmaintainsasafetyfactorofatleasttwo;andunderthesupervisionofa

    qualifiedperson.Ensurethatthestructuretowhichyouareattachingyouranchorageconnectoris

    capableofmeetingtheaboverequirementsandthatyouranchorageconnectorisinstalledinaccordancewiththemanufacturersinstructions. Alsobesuretocheckthat

    Aconnector

    is

    any

    metallic,

    mechanical

    element

    such

    as

    acarabiner,

    snap

    hook

    rebarhookthatphysicallylinksoneormoreelementsofayourPFAStogetherinamannersuchthattheywillremainengagedtooneanotherunlesstheyareintentionallydisengaged.

    Aconnectingdeviceisanelementthatconnectsyourfullbodyharnesstotheanchorageinanefforttoensurethatyouremainattachedortetheredtothestructureuponwhichyouareworking. Inotherwords,theconnectingdeviceisthatelementwhichsecuresyoutoyouranchorage.2.4: DecelerationDevices

    AdecelerationdeviceistheelementofaPersonalFallArrestSystem(PFAS)whichis

    activatedduring

    afall

    event

    and

    reduces

    the

    forces

    exerted

    on

    the

    users

    body

    and

    on

    theanchorageduringthearrestofthefall. InthecaseofShockAbsorbingLanyardsandSelfRetractingLifelines,theseproductsarebothaconnectingdeviceandadecelerationdeviceastheywillkeepyouattachedtoyouranchorageandwillreducetheforcesonyourbodyintheeventofafall.2.5: FallArrest

    FallArrestisanareaofFallProtectionwhichfocusesonstoppingafallonceithasoccurred. PersonalFallArrestSystemstypicallyconsistofananchorage,afullbody

Ensurethefallpathisclearofobstructions,protrusions,equipmentormaterialsthatmaybeahazardintheeventofafall. Payspecialattentiontothoseitemswhichmaypresentanimpalementhazard.Obstructionsinthefallpathmaybejustashazardousasthefallitself,andyourPFAS

    maynot

    be

    able

    to

    protect

    you

    from

    these

    hazards.

    Failure

    to

    clear

    the

    fall

    path

    may

    resultinseriousinjuryordeath. RigyourPFASwithextremecaution,andbeawareofallofthefactorsthatmaycomeintoplayintheeventofafall.

    SwingFallisthephenomenonthatoccurswhentheuserfallsfromalocationthatisnotdirectlyadjacentto,ordirectlybelowtheanchorageconnector. Thisisalsoreferredtoasthependulumeffect,andcanresultinasituationwheretheuserisnotonly

    fallingvertically,

    but

    is

    also

    swinging

    on

    the

    horizontal

    as

    well.

    This

    can

    bring

    additional

    hazardsintoplay,asyoumayswingintoanobstructionorstructuralelement,causingseriousinjuries(seefigure2.2). AsignificantSwingFallmayalsorequireincreasedClearFalldistance. Asaruleofthumb,youshouldensureworkinanareathatdoesnotexceedananglegreaterthan15degreesinanydirectionfromyouranchorage.

    ThissectiondealswiththegeneraluseandlimitationsofFallTechSlingAnchors.Pleasereadthissectionandallsectionsofthismanualthoroughly. Ifyourapplicationisnotaddressed,orifyouhavequestionsregardingyourspecificneeds,pleasecontactFallTechimmediatelyforadditionalguidance.3.1: GeneralGuidelines

    Whenproperlyinstalledandutilized,thisFallTechSlingAnchorwillprovideasafeanchorageforasingleuser(theexceptiontothisruleistheWebPassThruAnchorSlings,whichmaybeincludedasanchorageconnectorswithcertainFallTechHLLKitsfor

    multipleusers.

    As

    the

    user

    is

    working

    while

    tied

    off

    to

    this

    Sling

    Anchor,

    their

    Personal

    FallArrestSystem(PFAS)willbesecurelyattachedtothestructure.Beforeusingthisproduct,theusershouldbetrainedintheuseoffallarrestproducts

    andshouldhavecompletedaminimumcourseofinstruction(48hours)forAuthorizedPersonTrainingasoutlinedinANSIZ359.22007. TheusermustalsoreadandbefamiliarwithallofthematerialcontainedinthisinstructionmanualaswellasalllabelsandwarningsaffixedtotheFallTechSlingAnchor. Ifyouhaveanyquestionsregarding

    Fall

    Arrest

    SystemandwillcomprisetheAnchorageelementofyourPFAS(seesection2ofthismanualforclarificationoftheseterms). ThisproductisdesignedtobeattachedtoaproperlyratedstructuralmembermeetingtheanchoragerequirementsestablishedinTitle29,SubpartM(OSHA1926.502)aswellastheANSIZ359bodyofstandards,inordertoprovideasecureanchorageforyourPFAS.

    YourSlingAnchorshouldideallybemountedtoanoverheadstructuralmember,orriggedinamannersuchthatFreeFallisrestrictedtonomorethan6(6feet). Incircumstanceswherethereisnowaytolimitfreefallto6,orwherethereisnoaccess

    toan

    overhead

    structural

    member

    Slings

    may

    be

    used

    mounted

    toaratedstructuralmemberprovidedthattheFreeFallisrestrictedtoamaximumof12,andtheSlingAnchorISNOTexposedtoanysharp,jaggedorabrasiveedgesorsurfaces. WhenriggedforaFreeFallgreaterthansixfeet,yourFallTechSlingAnchormustbeusedwithaFallTechIronmanserieslanyard(7247,7247Y,8247,8247Y,8248and8248Y). Usersweighingmorethan310lbs.(includingtoolsandequipment)mayonlyusethisdeviceiftheyareutilizingaFallTechHeavyweightSeriesShockAbsorbingLanyards(8248,82483,8248Yand8248Y3)orHeavyweightSeriesSelfRetractingLifelines(denotedbyHWinthemodelnumber)BesuretoreviewtheClearFall

    Anchorageconnectorsshouldbeselectedonthebasisoftheirsuitabilityforattachmenttotheanchorpointtoensureacompatibleandsecure

    connection.

    Theexposureoftheanchorageconnectortosharpedges,abrasivesurfacesandotherphysical/structuralhazardsshouldbeconsideredwhenevaluatingcompatibility.

    ThecompetentpersonshallcalculatetheweightofallauthorizedpersonswhenfullyequippedtoensurethattheyarewithinthemaximumcapacityofthePFAS.

    AfullbodyharnessmeetingtherequirementsofZ359shallbeselected,anditshallbesizedtofittheuserasperthemanufacturersinstructions.

    Connectorsthatareselectedshallbesuitablysizedandshapedsoastobecompatiblewiththedevicestowhichtheywillbeattached.

    Thecompetentpersonshallselectthemethodofprotectingtheequipmentfromdamagebyworkplaceconditions,inaccordancewiththemanufacturersinstructions.

    Thecompetentpersonshallchecktheequipmentinstructionsandmarkingstoensurecompliancewiththeappropriatestandardsandwillensurethatmanufacturersinstructions;markingsandwarningsarereadandfollowed.

    7.3: SuspensionTraumaSuspensionTrauma(alsoreferredtoasorthostaticintolerance)isaconditionthat

    canarisefrombeingsuspendedinafullbodyharnessforaprolongedperiodoftimewhileawaitingrescueafterafall. Underthesecircumstances,bloodcirculationcanberestrictedallowingalargevolumeofbloodtoaccumulateorpoolintheveinsoftheworkerslegs. Thisconditioncanresultinavarietyofsymptoms,someofwhichincludelightheadedness,lossofconsciousness,difficultyconcentratingandpalpitations.

    Followingarescue,SuspensionTraumacanbesoacuteastocausecardiacarrest

    whenthe

    volume

    4. Checkthefunctionofanyandallmechanicalpartssuchascarabinersorsnaphooks. Anyoftheseelementsshouldbecapableofbeingoperatedand
