WELCOMEIt’s a beautiful time of year in St. Albert as the leaves change to yellows, oranges and reds. The nights get cooler and the days shorter. With fall in full swing, it’s a perfect time to think about how you can stay active and healthy this fall and winter. In this issue you’ll find tips on healthy living and the associated health benefits for all age groups. You’ll also find all kinds of recreational and fitness ideas including drop-in programs and new registered programs like Yoga for Non-Yogis, Operation Family Fit where parents and children can work out together and a self defense workshop.Another new option this fall is the track lane membership at Servus Credit Union Place. You and your family can walk, jog and run on the track at reduced rates. It’s an easy way to continue or start a walk routine when sidewalks are snowy and slippery. If you’d rather breathe the fresh air and make your own tracks in the snow, there are countless ways you can be active in the parks, and on the hills and trails. Go cross country skiing in Kingswood Park, tobogganing on hills throughout the city, or take a long walk though the Red Willow Trail System, Grey Nuns White Spruce Park or Riverlot 56. And check out our feature on Lace Up Your Skates- for all things skating. There’s something for everyone!

We would love to hear your thoughts about this

guide.

Being active in the fall and winter is just as important as in the summer! When the sun sets earlier and the temperature drops, it’s common to feel less energetic and motivated. Don’t let the weather dampen your spirits because there are some great benefits to exercising outside when it’s cold: • You’ll get a dose of Vitamin D which can

help prevent Seasonal Affective Disorder!• You burn more calories because your body

is working harder to keep itself warm. This also means you’ll strengthen your heart as it works harder to pump blood throughout your body. Make sure to bundle up and wear the right clothing that will help wick sweat and keep you warm.

• You’ll get an instant mood boost from the fresh air and being surrounded by nature. Better yet, pair up with a workout buddy so you can socialize and motivate each other.

• You will get used to the cooler weather and it will also help your immunity during the cold and flu season.

WINTER SAFETY NEAR ICE

The City of St. Albert wants everyone to be safe by staying off rivers, lakes, ponds and stormwater management facilities (SWMF) throughout the city during winter. These ice surfaces are unpredictable and are not safe for any type of recreational activity. Special care should be taken around SWMF. They can be mistaken for a pond, but a closer look will help you understand why they aren’t safe to be on. Water is continuously flowing underneath the ice, even if it may appear completely frozen. This makes the SWMF very dangerous for walking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and skating.

LACOMBE LAKE PARKThis is the only pond in the city that is safe for walking and skating once it is opened for the public to use. When the ice is thick enough for equipment to safely scrape and clear snow, the ice gets ready for skating. To learn more about all the opportunities for skating in the City see the “Lace Up Your Skates” section starting on page 12.

PARKS FOR EVERYONEDiscover the city’s more than 100 parks where you can get your blood pumping with outdoor fitness equipment like at Lafleur Park, Lions Park and Leveque Park, or have a more relaxed day with your family by building snowmen or making snow angels. The parks in and around the city offer visitors the chance to explore nature and enjoy the tranquility.

Riverlot 56This large natural area is a hidden gem with aspen forests, open meadows and walking trails. In the fall, weave through the trails and admire the changing colours of the tree canopies. Keep your eye out for wildlife as this park is an important habitat for deer, moose, coyotes, snowshoe hares, muskrats and beavers. In the winter, escape to Riverlot 56 for peace and quiet where you can snowshoe and cross-country ski. You can get there from Poundmaker Road, where you will see the small parking lot.

Grey Nuns White Spruce Park This magnificent park is a Municipal Historic Resource and the spruce trees from this forest were used to build some of St. Albert’s first homes back in 1861. This rare forest in an urban setting is a pleasure to visit. You’ll feel this as you walk on Hogan Road through the forest, which was the original road that let people to access the river without trespassing on any privately-owned land (est. 1884). Delicate paths will take you through the forest where you can experience some of the tallest and oldest trees in St. Albert - well over 100 years old! Access the park from the Rotary Park parking lot. From there, follow the trail and go over the Ray Gibbon Drive overpass.

Lois Hole Centennial Provincial ParkNamed after Lois Hole, the 15th Lieutenant Governor of Alberta, this park is recognized as a globally-significant important bird habitat because of the more than 235 bird species recorded within the park’s boundaries. It’s very popular for bird watching and photography. The park includes Big Lake and is also home to the John E. Poole Interpretive Wetland. You can access it from the Lois Hole Centennial Provincial Park parking lot located at the intersection of Ray Gibbon Drive and LeClair Way or the Rotary Park parking lot in Riel Recreation Park.

Trail EtiquetteTrails are used for all different types of activities and with so many users, it’s important to share the pathways responsibly. Please remember the following rules so the trails can be safe and enjoyable for everyone:• Right of way: Keep to the right of the

pathway except when passing or turning left and move off the trail to the right when stopping.

• Be careful: Be aware of proper passing and braking techniques before going on the trails.

• Share responsibility: Trails provide opportunities for all. Lead by example and help teach others about proper trail etiquette.

• Yield: Move off to the right side of the trail for less mobile users, and yield to slower moving traffic: cyclists to pedestrians, joggers to walkers.

• Leash your dog: Please ensure your dog is on-leash on trails within one metre of trails in off-leash areas.

ETIQUETTEHelp us keep parks and trails safe and clean by following these rules when out with your dog:1. Please pick up after your dog. Pet waste

can carry worms and other parasites which make them dangerous to the health of kids and other dogs.

2. Dogs must always be licensed and remain under your control.

3. You must carry a leash and attach it to your dog while on the trails; even on trails inside an off-leash area.

4. When organized sporting activities take place in an off-leash area, that entire area becomes on-leash.

5. For the safety of children, dogs are not allowed in playground areas.

6. Please be a responsible dog owner and follow the Animal Bylaw 11/2013.

DOG PARKS AND ON/OFF-LEASH AREAS

The dog days of summer may be over, but that doesn’t mean outdoor fun has to end for Fido! The City of St. Albert has two dog-friendly parks at Lacombe Lake Park and Dodger Dog Park, as well as many off-leash sites throughout the city. The “paw-sibilities” for your pup to roam leash-free, mingle with new dogs and chase the wind are endless! For more information, including a map of dog friendly parks, visit stalbert.ca and search dog-friendly parks.

WALKINGWalking is the favourite activity amongst Albertans* and for good reason. It’s free, easily accessible and enjoyable. You can also achieve health benefits through a regular walking routine. There are trails throughout the city that are cleared throughout winter, and when the weather isn’t cooperating, walk in the mall or try the indoor track at Servus Place, with a 270 metre track for walking or jogging.Tips to Make Walking Part of Your Fitness Plan: • Walk to do errands, to work and to meet up

with friends.• If you’re driving or taking the bus to your

destination, park further away or get off a stop earlier and walk.

WALK THIS WAY

Research indicates walking 10,000 steps per day can improve aerobic performance, body composition and mental health by promoting a positive change in mood, energy and stress. Walk This Way will help you hit your step count using the 270m indoor track at Servus Place. A trainer will help you improve your gait and teach different drills and intervals to help you achieve your goals. Research shows that high intensity walking can provide similar benefits to running, therefore walking provides a safe and low-impact option for individuals at all fitness levels. Come walk with us!

Available on a monthly or annual basis, a track lane membership is a convenient and affordable way to get in your daily step count or take a stroll with friends without worrying about outdoor conditions. The track lane membership does not provide access to any equipment or activity areas outside of the track lanes or any other spontaneous use areas of the facility.

STEP Forward (Supervised Transitional Exercise Program)A beginner to intermediate level physical conditioning program for people with a chronic health condition which limits their ability to move, those ready to reintegrate into the community following medical or rehabilitative intervention, those attempting to prevent injury by improving physical function or for those with deteriorating physical status wanting to prevent admission to a medical facility. AQUATICSFountain Park Recreation Centre and the Landrex Water Play Centre at Servus Place offer drop-in aquatic fitness classes that are low-impact and provide an energizing workout. “Water cushions the joints, keeps the heart rate low and provides resistance in all directions of movement while gently massaging the muscles to prevent post-workout stiffness,” says Tracey, Aquatic Fitness Class Instructor. “Aquafit classes provide a comfortable and safe workout environment for active agers and also provides social connections for those seniors who may otherwise feel isolated or just lonely.” The City of St. Albert is proud to offer a diversity of active aging opportunities where you can enjoy ageless play. Find an activity that suits your lifestyle and brings you joy!
