reduce ongoing congestion resulting from multiple, concurrent

activities on the Schauer Center’s upper level. And lastly,

the features and layout of the building, combined with a very

generous lease offer by the Hausers, helped to clinch the deal.”

The 30 S. Johnson Street property is currently undergoing a

$50,000-plus “facelift” to be transformed into the best possible

arts education venue. Class offerings are expected to gradually

increase and diversify once the facility opens, in mid September.

Also new for Fall 2011, the School of Dance will offer students

the convenience of placing shoe and dance at tire orders directly

through the Schauer Center.

Formerly a tness club that was most recently occupied by

Hartford Union High School, the 30 S. Johnson Street building

boasts 4,000 square feet of space. Two racquetball courts

are being converted to dance studios, virtually doubling the

Schauer Center’s capacity to provide quality dance instruction.

One of the new studios will offer a viewing window for parent

observation. The new facility will also offer 700 square

feet of multi-purpose visual arts studio space. Finally, an

adjoining parent/student lounge will offer an ofcial “waiting

area,” as well as a quiet place to work or study — a feature

that was sorely lacking in the current School of the Arts

accommodations.

Executive Director Thomas Robbins asserts “With the

expansion of our facilities, services, and programming at 30

S. Johnson Street, the Schauer Center is poised to once again

reinforce its role as a vital player in sustaining downtown

Hartford as a dynamic location for residents and visitors alike.

It is also a tting addition as the Community School of the Arts

celebrates 10 years in Fall 2011.”

The Schauer Center has launched a fundraising campaign to

cover the cost of capital improvements at 30 S. Johnson Street.

Those interested in supporting this new arts education initiative

should contact the Schauer Center’s Director of Development,

Margaret Karius, at 262-670-0560, ext . 216.
