Fall Prevention Everyone learned in school what the 5 senses were: hearing, vision, taste, touch and smell. But no one ever talked about your sense of balance. The ability to stand, sit and move is such a part of our every-day life, that we take it for granted. When you get dizzy or become unsteady, it can affect your whole life. Sudden attacks of dizziness can be a sign of stroke or heart attack. Dizziness requires immediate medical attention to rule out something serious. More commonly, as we age, we begin to experience unsteadiness. It usually occurs gradually. Instability can lead to falling, causing injury with serious consequences. If you are unstable, you should tell your doctor. He may send you to an audiologist (hearing specialist) or neurologist to diagnose your problems. They may recommend exercises to help you maintain stability. Southwestern Ear, Nose & Throat Associates (SWENT) has served the health needs of Santa Fe and the communities of northern New Mexico since 1986. Fall Prevention

Everyone learned in school what the 5

senses were: hearing, vision, taste, touch

and smell. But no one ever talked about

your sense of balance. The ability to stand,

sit and move is such a part of our every-day

life, that we take it for granted. When you

get dizzy or become unsteady, it can affect

your whole life.

Sudden attacks of dizziness can be a sign of stroke or heart attack.

Dizziness requires immediate medical attention to rule out something

serious. More commonly, as we age, we begin to experience

unsteadiness. It usually occurs gradually. Instability can lead to

falling, causing injury with serious consequences.

If you are unstable, you should tell your doctor. He may send you to

an audiologist (hearing specialist) or neurologist to diagnose your

problems. They may recommend exercises to help you maintain

stability.
