4 Causes of Skin DamageAuthor: Margaret Bell

Health & BeautySunburn causes acute (short-term) dam-age, which is repaired relatively quick-ly, although scarring can occur if burnsare severe. Sunburn can also causelong-term damage by causing breaks incellular DNA.If the DNA damage is not repaired bythe body, cellular mutations can occur. The mutations are pre-cursors to theformation of cancerous growths.

Any excess skin darkening can causethe damage that leads to cancer.

The process that occurs during tanningis basically the same as what occursduring sunburn, which contradicts theidea that tanning is healthy.

Free radicals form during sun exposure. Those that are already present becomeexcited by the UV rays. Free radicaldamage is a type of molecular skin inju-ry.

Free radicals also form due to exposureto toxins. Cigarette smoke is a toxinthat causes wrinkles and may play arole in skin cancer, although excessivesun exposure is most often to blame forcancerous growths.

Some toxins cause cellular mutationsdirectly. They are known as carcino-gens. Some chemicals are possible orprobable carcinogens. Others are"known" carcinogens.

Here are 4 main causes for skin dam-age. Let's investigate how skin damagecan begin and then see How to ReverseSkin Damage.Damaging molecules include free radi-cals and inflammatory cytokines. Ad-vanced glycation end-products or AGEsdamage cells, too. The damage canlead to wrinkle formation. The cascadeof events leading to the formation ofAGEs plays a role in acne and possiblyhair loss. What we put into our bodiesaffects the way we look on the outside.

6

Page 7: Fall Issue

Cont.

One of the known carcinogens is ben-zene. Benzene derivatives called oxy-benzone and benzophenone arecommonly used as sunscreen ingredi-ents. The derivatives are known tocause cellular mutations, but onlywhen exposed to sunlight. That makesthem probable photo-carcinogens.Molecular skin injury can also becaused by an allergic or adverse reac-tion. Dermatitis is inflammation of thedermis. It can be caused by exposureto allergens or irritants.Inflammation can degrade the skin'scollagen fibers, which would cause lostfirmness. Allergens or irritants may bepresent in clothing or the environment. Many are found in skin care products.Chronic inflammation is known to playa role in cancers of all kinds. So eventhough sunburn is commonly cited as acause of skin cancer, it is not the onlypossible cause.Excessive dryness can occur as a re-sult of excess skin darkening or tan-ning. When the skin is dry, it is moreeasily damaged. People with drynessissues are more likely to have wrinklesat an earlier age than are people withoilier complexions.

Cleansers strip the skin's naturally pro-tective oils causing dryness and mak-ing it more easily damaged.

Some cleanser ingredients are suspectedof giving off cancerous byproducts. Tri-closan is an example. It can combinewith the chlorine in tap water to formchloroform gas, a known carcinogen. As you can see, there are many thingsthat cause molecular skin damage. All ofthem can lead to the formation of cancer-ous growths or wrinkles. It may be possible to avoid the sunburn. But what does one do to reverse sundamaged skin and other types of dam-age? You'll learn the answers in my nextarticle: How to Reverse Skin Damage.

How to Apply for a CollegeScholarshipAuthor: Alen Thomson

How to Apply for a College ScholarshipWhen we speak of college scholarship appli-cation, the burden is always on the parents.Since they have the responsibility over theeducation of their children and they knowwhat will be good for them, parents applypersonally for the college scholarship oftheir children.

What if we turn the tide? From primary tosecondary education, your parents acceptedthe responsibility. But you are old enoughto take care of a simple college scholarshipapplication. It takes some courage, self-confidence, and some excellent academicrecords to apply for a college scholarship.Keep in mind that is you who will utilize thefinancial aid that comes with the scholar-ship and not your parents. Thus, applyingfor a college scholarship is now your busi-ness, and you can do it with less supervi-sion from your parents. The procedure forcollege scholarship application is similarwhen you apply for college grant. You needto learn every scholarship opportunityavailable and make a list of potential pros-pects that you think will fit your personalneeds. Once through with the list, you needto create an application letter and stateyour achievements (good high school scho-lastic records and recommendation lettersfrom your high school director and teach-ers) and you are now on your way on get-ting into college for less, if not for free.

The above-mentioned procedure is themost common way of getting a collegescholarship. However, the chances of suc-cess lies in you,and you need to exert moreeffort to assure yourself of a financial aidwhen you go to college. To increase yourchances, here are some pointers that youcan consider:•You should start as early asyour high school years.

There are many college scholarships thatopen during your senior high school year.

In addition, these financial aid programs areonly open in a specific period of time. Oncethe application closes, you have to wait foranother year before you can file for your ap-plication. Starting early will give you betterchances of getting the best financial aid avail-able. •Give importance to the scholarshiprequirements. Keep in mind that among allavailable scholarships, there are only few thatwill fit your qualifications. Read the eligibilitystandards of the college scholarship that youwant to apply. If you found out that the fi-nancial aid does not fit with the qualificationsthat you have, search for another. Do notinsist yourself on scholarships where yourchances of success is minute.•Do not forgetto complete the requirements asked by thecollege scholarship. Prepare the documentsthat are commonly asked by the scholarshipgrantee to its applicants. •Your applicationletter will be your "speaking alter-ego" to thesponsor of the college scholarship you haveapplied for. Thus, you need to create an ap-plication letter that will convince the sponsorthat you honestly need the financial aid andyou deserve to get one, state honest informa-tion in your application. Never include falseinformation especially if your purpose is justto "flatter" the sponsor with your achieve-ments. After you followed the aforementionedrecipe, you are now ready to submit yourapplication to the scholarship screening com-mittee. Be prepared for other requirements(such as interviews and examinations) thatwill determine if you are eligible to receive acollege scholarship. Follow the aforemen-tioned college freshman's recipe when youapply for a college scholarship. And best ofall, do not forget to pray that the sponsorwould consider you eligible for the collegescholarship. Good luck!ArticleSource:http://www.articlesbase.com/learning-disabilities-articles/how-to-apply-for-a-college-scholarship-3594862.htmlAbout the AuthorFor more information at -How to Apply for a College Scholarship andhttp://www.how-youcan.com/How-To-Apply-College-Scholarship.htm8

A Blast from the Past –1920’s FashionAuthor: Mary Christine

It can rightly be said that the 1920s ush-ered in the era of modern fashion.Women fashion for example, moved fromthe constricting fashions and into the eraof short skirts and pants. Men fashionmoved from the overly formal style to thewearing of sport clothes. In fact, even inthe formal world, modern suits are stillbased on those worn in the late 20s.

With two distinct fashions emerging, thefirst running from 1920-25 and the otherstyle, commonly associated with the roar-ing Twenties running from 1925-32,1920s fashion had taken a turning pointthat would forever define fashion down toour time.

The 1920s fashion had a political-like rev-olution.

The fact that clothes in the 1920s werereadily available to any ‘regular' personwas as a result of the Industrial Age auto-mation apparently. Now that machinescould make clothes faster and cheaper, this ushered in the ready-to-wear revolu-tion that was never there before. The1920s fashion of the elite in Paris, Londonand New York were producing low-costattire and making them available even inrural farms and outposts of the Midwest. A‘high-class' girl and a ‘Midwestern' girlfrom off the farm could now not be distin-guished by their clothes. The politicalstatement that the 1920s fashion madeset the world on fire and has continued toinfluence modern fashion down to our day. This can be seen in the ‘Roaring Twenties'styles that fashion designers have re-

Fashion Trends

Fashion Trends Cont.invented into their modern creations. The fact that this age of fashion gave eventhe regular people ‘style' which was uncom-mon in an age influenced by the Victorianstatus quo is one reason why the 1920sfashion is so inspiring. It can thus be saidthat the 1920s fashion set the bar of classi-cal style that we still live by.The idea that a woman had a sense of styleand individuality had emerged and was re-flected in the beauty and elegance of 20sclothing. The Roaring Twenties fashion iseverywhere today. If you know what you arelooking for, you will likely see the influenceof the 1920s fashion the next time the redcarpet is rolled and the likes of Nicole Kid-man walk past it.

Online dating cannot be done without an on-line profile. While making an online profile ateen age girl should take care of her age andtherefore her expressions and sense of modes-ty. Too extrovert approach or too bold com-ments may not be suitable for her new-ageprofile and it may damage her social profilewith considerable effect. For teenagers it is easy to be overwhelmed bynew approach and proposals of love while do-ing dating. However before losing heart it isbetter to consider the whole issue in the lightof practicality. A teen-age girl should be con-scious of her academic and professional careerfirst. In case a teenage girl gets enticed bysome of the online daters and feels to be com-mitted it is better to consult one of her guard-ians for suggestions and advices.

5 Facts About Goal Setting

14

Say your goal out loud each morn-ing to remind yourself of what youwant and what you're working for.(Writing it down works too.) Everytime you remind yourself of yourgoal, you're training your brain tomake it happen.

The key to making anychange is to find the desire withinyourself — you have to do it be-cause you want it, not because agirlfriend, boyfriend, coach, par-ent, or someone else wants youto. It will be harder to stay ontrack and motivated if you're do-ing something out of obligation toanother person.

Slip-ups are actually part of thelearning process as you retrainyour brain into a new way ofthinking. It may take a few tries toreach a goal. But that's OK — it'snormal to mess up or give up afew times when trying to make achange. So remember that every-one slips up and don't beat your-self up about it. Just remindyourself to get back on track.

When it comes to making a change, the people who succeed are those whoset realistic, specific goals. "I'm goingto recycle all my plastic bottles, sodacans, and magazines" is a much moredoable goal than "I'm going to domore for the environment." And thatmakes it easier to stick with.

It willprobably take a couple of months be-fore any changes — like getting uphalf an hour early to exercise — be-come a routine part of your life. That'sbecause your brain needs time to getused to the idea that this new thingyou're doing is part of your regularroutine.

5 Ways to Get Your 5 a Day

You may have heard that you should eat 5servings of fruit and vegetables a day —which works out to a total of about 2½cups. But experts actually recommend get-ting even more than that amount.

There are no limits on the quantities oftasty fruits and veggies you can enjoy —unless, of course, you load 'em up withbutter or dressing, or deep-fry them! Butmany of us still find it hard to fit fruit andveggies into our meals.

Here are some ideas to help you get intothe 5-a-day (or more!) habit:

Start with the first meal of the day. Plan toeat a serving or two of fruit withbreakfast every day. Mix it up so youdon't get bored. Half a grapefruit, anapple, or a handful of berries on yourcereal are all good choices. Orangejuice counts too — but only if youdrink 100% juice. (Limit juice to 1 or2 servings a day). Continue this pat-tern by eating vegetables at lunchand at dinner.

Get extra energy from fruit or vegetablesnacks. The carbohydrates in fruitand vegetables are great sourcesof energy. Combine them with aserving of protein — such as apiece of cheese, a cup of yogurt,or a tablespoon of peanut butter, and you get staying power too.Ants on a log, anyone?

Double up on fruit and veggie servings.Recommended servings of fruitand veggies can be small. Unlikeother foods, it's OK to double theserving size of fruit or vegetables.Serve yourself a 1-cup portion ofbroccoli or tomatoes instead of thestandard serving of ½ cup.

Use fruit and vegetables as ingredients.Enjoy bread? Bake up a batch ofzucchini bread and get your veg-gies along with your grains! Useapplesauce instead of oil in yourbaked goods. Chop up veggies(peppers, carrots, celery) and tossthem into your favorite chili reci-pe. If you don't like vegetablesmuch, sneak them into foods youdo enjoy (like grating carrots intotomato sauce or, again, zucchiniinto bread). It's a great way to getyour veggies without having totaste them!

Try a new fruit, vegetable, or recipe eachweek. Our bodies like variety. Soset a goal to try something differ-ent each week. You may find anew favorite. One good way to getvariety is to eat the fruit and veg-gies that are in season in yourarea. They usually taste betterthan the bland fruit salad or shriv-eled apples you're used to seeingin the cafeteria!
