Where Camping Is King

This summer the three of us experienced one of Scouting’s ultimate treasures. We traveled to Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico for a week-long adventure we will never forget. All recently new to our positions, we went to Philmont to receive training on what we need to do in our roles, and more importantly as a team, to makes Scouting a stronger program for our youth and volunteers.

We learned what is needed to deliver the Scouting program in the Samoset Council and in the process developed an even greater appreciation for our dedicated volunteer leaders. Thank you for the positive impact you are having on the lives of our youth. We recognize the experiences our youth have in Scouting, the memories they carry with them for life, are the result of countless hours of selfless service. Your commitment to delivering the highest quality experiences for each youth in Scouting is what makes the Samoset Council the greatest Boy Scout Council in the country!

We join you in your commitment to amazing experiences for youth, each time they attend a Scouting activity. We all know youth will not attend meetings, outings, or activities they find “boring” or “unorganized”. Well planned, active, exciting activities (mostly in the outdoors) on a regular basis is what our youth are looking for and what they need! We are excited to provide you with every resource we can to support your effort to provide these kind of activities and experiences to our youth. Working together we will also instill in our youth the values of the Scout Oath and Law.

Please reach out and let us know what more we can do to support you in your volunteer service. We want to know how your experience is going as a volunteer leader. We would love to hear from you.

charter reNeWal 2015iS it that time alReady? not Quite, but Soon...

It may not seem like it’s time to start thinking about charter renewal but our motto is Be Prepared®. Below are the details you need to know about the charter renewal process for your Cub Scout Pack, Boy Scout Troop, Venturing Crew or Exploring Post.

Charter renewal is the process, required annually, each Scouting unit completes to ensure the membership records of the unit, and of the Boy Scouts of America, are accurate and complete for each youth and adult participating in the Scouting program.

So what needs to happen to ensure your unit charter is completed on-time and error free? Be Prepared®. Choose an adult volunteer from your unit to serve as the unit’s Charter Renewal Processor. That person needs to be aware of the timeline for success.

Charter renewal Timeline December – Attend your district’s December Roundtable meeting to receive your unit’s Charter Renewal Packet. All the instructions and resources you need to complete the charter renewal will be included. On Time and Error Free! At the December Roundtable for your district you will receive training and have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have about charter renewal.

January 1, 2015 – Following the instructions provided in the Charter Renewal Packet, the Charter Renewal Processor will log in to the online charter renewal system and complete the online portion of the charter renewal process.

No later than January 31, 2015 – Completed charter renewal paperwork and fees are turned in to the Samoset Council. Each district will have a turn-in day for charter renewal. The date(s) of your district’s turn-in day will be provided in your Charter Renewal Packet.

why are charters due on January 31? This allows Lois, our registrar the time needed to complete the final steps for each unit’s charter renewal. This can be a time consuming process. On February 28, 2015 the unit charters will be dropped by the Boy Scouts of America if the charter renewal process is not complete, including the last steps that need to be

2015 cuB Scout Programnew cub Scout adventuRe PRogRam

Improved activities, simplified advancement and some new handbooks -- Cub Scouting is about to get even better than before.

After finding that current achievements are overly passive in nature, activities lack connection to the missions of Scouting and the advancement model is too complicated, the Boy Scouts of America’s volunteer task force created a new and improved Cub Scout program that will debut in May 2015.

By the 2015-2016 Scouting year (which, for most packs, begins in August or September 2015), all packs will use the new requirements.

The new requirements coincide with the retiring of the Cub Scout Promise and Law of the Pack. As part of the One Oath, One Law initiative all packs will switch to the Scout Oath and Scout Law beginning in May 2015. Cub Scouting will keep its current Cub Scout motto, sign, salute and handshake.

Not everything is changing. Follow the jump to see what will and won’t change come May 2015 (and thanks to Bob Scott, Russ Hunsaker and Debbie Sullivan for the info).

what’s not changing• Cub Scouting’s family focus• Ranks or approach• Age (or gender) of ranks• Den/pack meeting structures• Outdoor program• Delivery model• Current Cub Scout motto, sign, salute and

handshake• Fun, though there will be even more than before

what is changing• Switch to one Scout Oath and

Scout Law• Tiger Cubs becomes simply

“Tiger” with a new logo• Arrow of Light will no longer

require earning Webelos• Activities will be more active,

more aligned with Aims/Mission• Advancement will be simplified• Academics & Sports program

will be discontinued (as of May 2015)

• Current immediate/elective recognition devices will be replaced

• One Den Leader Guide per rank

Cub scout adventures

New Cub Scout content will be broken into a series of “adventures,” which Cub Scouts (individually and as part of their den) will experience while working on their badge of rank.

Once a Cub Scout has completed the six core adventures, including one Duty to God adventure, and one of his/his den’s choosing he will have earned his badge of rank.

In addition to the adventures required for rank advancement, there will be 13 additional elective adventures that members of the den may earn. Each adventure is designed to take roughly three den meetings to implement, one of which may be an outing, ranging from attending a sporting event as a den, to taking a hike, to visiting a museum or going on a campout. At the conclusion of each adventure, a recognition device is awarded.

Are you tired of doing the same old routine? Did you know that Samoset Council operates 3 Scout camps including Cub Scout, Boy Scout and high-adventure programs? Each of these offers opportunities for a variety of summer camp staff jobs. Most Scout camp staff are at least 16 years of age, but the Boy Scout and Cub Scout camps have a few select jobs for youth who are a year or two younger. The high adventure program employs young people who are at least 18years of age.

Visit clsr.samoset.org to learn more and apply online. Applications are due December 15th!

Campership applicatons are due for winter camp Dec. 1, 2014 and summer camp by april 1, 2015.

In an effort to serve more Scouts and programs, the rifle range shelter at Tesomas Scout Camp has doubled in size. A special thanks to the NRA for providing the funding and all the volunteers who have helped with construction.

riFle raNge exPaNSioNTesomas Scout Camp

Samoset Council has teamed with Becher Hoppe Engineers and Architects of Wausau and RA Smith National to develop a Master Plan for the Crystal Lake Scout Reservation. Tesomas Scout Camp was founded in 1935 and has grown into one of the premier Scout camps in the United States.

Over the decades, our camps has evolved and adapted to the needs of the Scouting culture. Buildings have been built and renovated, and campsites have expanded to meet the needs of hosting up to 600 campers per week.

Long held traditions are still and will always be a part of camp experience. However a 25 year vision and master plan is needed to grow and adapt to the changing society, expectations and demographics. The use of high tech equipment, computers and devices along with ATV trails, BMX bike courses and climbing walls are continuing to become part of the everyday camp experience. Improved parking, circulation and safe bike trails are needed to accommodate the campers.

Work on the plan began this past summer and will continue throughout the next year. All team members are working hard to ensure the Crystal Lake Scout Reservation remains a regional leader in outdoor programming.
