Join the Vikings of JORVIK Viking Centre as they share stories and sagas of Viking invention and exploration that helped shape many of today’s everyday household items. Traverse your way around the Viking-Age city before getting up-close to some interesting Viking inventions in the ‘Discover Coppergate’ gallery featuring handling collections of items over 1,000 years old! Plus, make sure to check out our ‘Coppergate Alive’ app boards located outside JORVIK in Coppergate Square. DIG into Victorian Progress! 6pm to 9pm | Adult £2, Child/Conc £1 The garden at DIG will be transformed into a steampunk inspired Victorian workshop where our ‘Inventors’ will take you on a journey through the weird and wonderful world of Victorian inventions, with the help of some very special projections. Horrid Medieval Medicine at Barley Hall 7pm to 9pm | Adult £2, Child/Conc £1 Following on from our successful ‘Haunted Hall’ events, Barley Hall invites you to discover the horrid side of medieval and early Tudor medicine. Join our Barber Surgeon and Plague Doctor in the candlelit hall as they try out new and dangerous experiments on their poor medieval ‘patients’ - all in the name of science, of course! A New Light on Medieval Warfare at Richard III Experience 6pm to 9pm | Adult £2, Child/Conc £1 Meet our medieval soldier within the ancient fortifications of Monk Bar, on York’s city walls and let him regale you with stories by candlelight on warfare and weapons from the middle-ages. The outcome of this skirmish heralded the beginning of the end of the Viking Age in England. Friday 26th European Researchers’ Night: Ancient Diets at DIG19:00 - 21:00 | DIG | FREEAn after-hours chance for grown-ups to get hands-on at DIG, and to hear from York-based researchers on the history of the city’s foodstuffs over the centuries. Explore the archaeology of animal remains with help from DIG staff, and find out how the latest techniques employed by experts in bioarchaeology and related disciplines are helping to shed light on the foodstuffs and diets of our ancestors. Held in association with the University of York as part of Researchers’ Night, a mega event which takes place every year simultaneously in several hundred cities all over Europe and beyond.
