From Our New Pastor... Rev. Wayne MyersDear Members and Friends of the Pink Church, It is with a strong sense of call and great enthusiasm that I look forward to beginning my service as the Senior Pastor at the Pink Church. I cannot tell you the sheer number of people who, when learning that I accepted the call to the Pink Church, responded by saying “I love that church.” I am not just talking about members of the congregation – though I have heard that sentiment from you – I am talking about people I have had contact with in my short visits to Pompano Beach. They are real estate agents, grocery store clerks, hotel staff, waiters and waitresses, and home sellers. I have even heard it from four separate members of my current congregation! One couple in my church told me grandparents on both sides of their family belonged to Pink Church. Another member shared with me that she had helped in the nursery on many Sundays when she was in town visiting her husband’s parents, who were also church members! Now that is exciting, and humbling. It speaks to the strong history and high regard that the Pink Church has in the wider community. It’s also a confirmation of call, and a one of my many reasons for enthusiasm about coming to the Pink Church. My first day in the office will be August 25 and my first Sunday in the pulpit will be August 30. I have a lot to learn! First and foremost, I want to learn your names, your stories, your history with the Pink Church and your hopes and dreams for the future. During my first few months, I will be spending time visiting, meeting and especially listening. I want to get to know you and the church and begin to discern the possibilities for the next chapter in the ministry and program of this great congregation. I already know you have a wonderful staff! I was privileged to meet with them the last time I was in town and I am eager to begin sharing the day-to-day responsibilities of the church with this talented and dedicated group. Change is rarely easy. It often comes with a mix of emotions, feelings of loss and a sense of dislocation. However, change also offers the opportunity for growth and the chance to listen to one another and to God in new ways. As we all move from this period of transition, let us decide to move into a time of listening. By God’s grace, may we hear one another and through our shared discernment trust that God is leading us and has our future already mapped. As our future unfolds, may we listen well and always have the faith to follow Him.

Blessings,

Pastor Wayne

We are always saddened at the loss of a beloved Church member, but we need to celebrate their memory and know they have been blessed with an eternal and pain-free life. Please keep the families of these loved ones in your prayers…

All of us from The Pink Church want to extend our deepest appreciation for Pastor Ben and the love and dedication he has shown in his time with us. Join us on Sunday, August 23, for one service at 10:00 to celebrate Ben and say goodbye.

Farewell from our Temporary Pastor,Rev. Dr. Ben Sorensen

Dear Pink Church Family,This has been an amazing six months being part of the Pink Church and a blessed journey for me. Although I have passionately loved serving you and have come to think of you as my family, I have also come to recognize that for a host of reasons, both professionally and personally, it is time for me to leave the Pink Church. Thanks to God’s guidance, strength and your support, I have learned so much and have grown in my own faith during our time together. I am confident that God has wonderful plans in store for me and for the Pink Church. I ask that all of you embrace Rev. Wayne Myers. Know that Pastor Wayne, his wife and family have come to you through God’s hand, and be prepared to personally give of yourself to help make a difference in the next chapter of this church’s life. You have been a blessing to me as I know you will be to Pastor Wayne as well.

Faithfully,

Pastor Ben

Several years ago, Arlene and her husband were invited to spend the weekend at the husband’s employer’s home. Arlene was nervous about the weekend. The boss was very wealthy, with a fine home on the waterway and cars costing more than her house. The first day and evening went well, and Arlene was delighted to have this rare glimpse into how the very wealthy live. The husband’s employer was quite generous as a host, and took them to the finest restaurants during their stay. As the three of them were about to enter an exclusive restaurant that evening, the boss was walking slightly ahead of Arlene and her husband. He stopped suddenly, looking down on the pavement for a long, silent moment. Arlene wondered if she was supposed to pass him. There was nothing on the ground except a single darkened penny that someone had dropped. Still silent, the man reached down and picked up the penny. He held it up and smiled, then put it in his pocket as if he had found a great treasure. Why would he even take the time to stop and pick it up?Throughout dinner, the entire scene nagged at her. Finally, she could stand it no longer. She casually mentioned that her daughter once had a coin collection, and asked if the penny he had found had been of some value. A smile crept across the man’s face as he reached into his pocket for the penny and held it out for her to see. She had seen many pennies before! What was the point of this? ‘Look at it.’ He said. ‘Read what it says.’ She read the words ‘United States of America.’‘No, not that; read further.’‘One cent?’‘No, keep reading.’ ‘In God we Trust?’ ‘Yes!’‘And?’‘And if I trust in God, the name of God is holy, even on a coin. Whenever I find a coin I see that inscription. It is written on every single United States coin, but we never seem to notice it! God drops a message right in front of me telling me to trust Him. Who am I to pass it by? When I see a coin, I pray, I stop to see if my trust IS in God at that moment. I pick the coin up as a response to God; that I do trust in Him. For a short time, at least, I cherish it as if it were gold. I think it is God’s way of starting a conversation with me. Lucky for me, God is patient and pennies are plentiful!’When Arlene was out shopping, she found a penny on the sidewalk. This time she stopped and picked it up, and realized that she had been worrying and fretting in her mind about things she could not change. She read the words, ‘In God We Trust,’ and had to laugh. ‘Yes, God, I get the message’, she thought. It seems that we all have the opportunity to find an inordinate number of pennies if we keep our eyes out for them. Just remember, pennies are plentiful! And, God is patient...

YOUR HANDS ARE GOD’S HANDSStop and think for a moment about the hands you have, how they have served you well throughout your years. Those hands, which may be youthful and strong or wrinkled and weakened with age, have been the tools you have used all your life to reach out, grab, and embrace life. They’ve been used to feed you and dress you. They’ve tied shoelaces and pulled on boots. They’ve been dirty, scraped raw, and swollen, and also lovely after a manicure. As a child, you learned to fold them in prayer as you knelt beside your bed. If you were so blessed to find the love of your life, they were uneasy and clumsy when you first held hands, then decorated with a wedding band that showed the world that you were loved by someone special. If a parent, they have held your newly born child, changed diapers, and held spoons to feed your offspring.Your hands have trembled in times of both fear and happiness. They have covered your face, combed your hair, and washed and cleansed your body. Wet and dry, bent and broken, they’ve been used to ply your trade. Those hands show the scars and marks of where you’ve been and show the work and struggles of your life. And to this day, these hands hold you up, lay you down, and continue to fold in prayer. It will be these hands that the Lord will reach out and take when He brings you home, and you will use those same hands to touch His radiant face.Perhaps you will never look at your hands the same way again. When your hands are hurt or sore, respect them for not only all the work they have done for you and others, but for the times you folded them to seek God in prayer. And when doing the work of God, thank Him that He loves and trusts you enough to allow you to be His hands in this world that is so in need of a loving touch. They are the hands God gave you to reach out in service to others. Are you answering His call?

BE A “GLEANER!”Family Fun & For Community Service Hours too!

In partnership with volunteers of all ages, C.R.O.S. (Christians Reaching Out to Society) Ministries invites the whole community to take action that really makes a difference. One Saturday a month, our Pink Church team harvests crops to feed the homeless, working poor or low-income individuals and families. Crops (corn, green peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, star fruit, cantaloupes, tangerines, mangoes, and potatoes) are “gleaned” or selected from leftovers in the farmers’ fields and sometimes from donated areas of a productive field, then sent to local agencies with feeding programs. Gleaning, as a practice to combat hunger, is thousands of years old. Old Testament law required of property owners, “When you harvest your land’s produce…don’t gather every remaining bit of your harvest. Leave these items for the poor and the immigrant.” Leviticus 23:22 (CEB)

In the last season, 1,600 individuals picked 319,438 pounds of produce. That is about 200 pounds per picker! You will enjoy a family morning of fun, fresh air, and spiritual renewal for a vital project sponsored by your church Mission Committee. Dates for fall gleaning will be posted shortly. Students can also get community service hours! To participate, call Randy or Marianne Shine at 954-428-4007.

TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

Together We Can Make A Difference!

Volunteers are needed at the Agape Cafe to help prepare food and serve. Not like any homeless program, participants enjoy proper meal service complete with musical accompaniment. Join us the last Thursday of each month from 1:00 PM to 5:00

PM at Saint Martin’s in Pompano Beach. Volunteers are requested to call Marianne or Randy Shine at 954-428-4007 to sign up. We need your helping hands!

Fun in the mango fields in June!Don’t miss the fun next time!

OUR OWN CYCLE CHAMPION… Elder, Anita Lawson! In June, powered by your love and support, our own elder, Anita Lawson conquered 62 miles of hills in western North Carolina. With a 37-mile training ride in those same hills the day prior, she logged 99 total miles of hills in two days! And, thanks to your incredible generosity, she was the third-highest fundraiser for this event! After four months of training and fundraising, it all came together beautifully for Anita’s team. The weather cooperated; starting temperature was in the low 60s, and it climbed into the high 70s. Course support was fabulous, and Anita especially liked the last rest stop, where apple pie and ice cream were offered. All thousand or so riders had a great time! Most important, 77 Team in Training cyclists raised $284,000 for blood cancer research and patient support programs. Those funds will go directly towards the kind of research that has already succeeded in finding a wonderful new therapy for Anita’s rare disease- She has taken for more than a year, 3 pills a day with miraculous results. It will also help to provide financial assistance for those facing high copays and medication costs. Your willingness to give is helping all of us with blood cancers! The Fletcher Flyer event marked Anita’s tenth season with Team in Training, and, God willing, it won’t be her last. The above photo is Anita crossing the finish line. We can’t see her big smile or the ribbons she wore on her jersey bearing the names of the patient heroes many of you asked her to remember. What we CAN see is the loving heart of a wonderful women we are all so very proud of. Congratulations, Anita! You are such a blessing!

Meet Our ‘Silver Angel’... Mr. Earl HarrisA silver angel is a perfect description of our nominee, Mr. Earl Harris. Earl has been a member of The Pink Church for a quarter of a century and has consistently shared his deep faith, his sense of service and his enduring elegant style with both members of this church and the community at large. On a weekly basis, Earl greets members and guests as they arrive for worship with his signature warmth and southern charm. In his role as a Deacon from 2009-2014, he actively participated in a variety of ministries from food preparation for the homeless to Hospitality and Fellowship events including opening his home for our Annual Christmas Home Tour. In 2014, Earl offered the financial support to allow us to repair and repaint our beautiful lace Spire, which is a landmark in the community. As our Spire reaches skyward as a symbol of our faith and joy, so Earl represents the best among us as a man of faith with his focus on serving others. We are blessed to know him and to love him, and it is indeed our honor to nominate him for this most deserved recognition.

This financially wise method of stewardship helps ensure the long-term financial stability of the church and provides a planned means for the church to continue its role in the lives of our members and those to whom we reach out, in our community and beyond. August 30 at 9:30 AMOur community is filled with children and teachers who are embarking on a new school year and we would like to have them begin this important journey with God’s blessings upon them. Our new Pastor, Rev. Wayne Myers, extends his personal invitation to everyone:

“I am truly excited to begin my tenure as the Pastor of The Pink Church. I am also excited about the beginning of a new school year! As we start this new year together, I would like to

extend my personal invitation for you to join us for our annual Back to School Blessing.”

2 Timothy 2:16 says, “All scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that children of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.”

Please join us as we bless and celebrate our children, their families and the teachers of our community that touch so many lives and make such a difference to the development of our next generation of community leaders. Invite the teachers and families that you know to be with us at the 9:30 service on this important Sunday!

Teachers, Students and Families from the community are invited to join us at The Pink Church for our…

IT’S BACK-TO-SCHOOL PREP TIME!Summer is almost over which means that frantic mornings complete with misplaced homework and procrastinating youths will soon be upon us. It is hard to break the comfortable cycle that summer provides. Even though mom and dad’s schedules have probably remained the same, not having to prepare lunches, worry about tomorrow’s dress needs or early morning class schedules somewhat eases responsibilities. The best way to comfortably fall back into the new school year and minimize rebellions and morning scream fests is best accomplished by introducing the school schedule early. Now is the time! For the next few weeks, try to keep what will become the school timetable for your family. Wake up and bedtime schedules for your household should be adjusted to fit the school’s schedule. This practice will help you and your children establish the best pace for morning efficiency

so everyone is on time and frustrations are minimized. If you have teens in the house, this will not necessarily be an easy task. The cry of “Ahhhhhh, Moooooooom… this is my LAST WEEK OF SUMMER!” will most likely be heard throughout the county!Shopping for school supplies and new clothes can also boost enthusiasm for the upcoming academic year and help everyone prepare. Start talking about classes and schedules at home, too. Your interest and encouragement will boost theirs. Talk with them when they get home from school, too. Spending quality time discussing your child’s first days; what they learned, who they met and all the exciting new things that took place, not only shows your interest in your child, it also underscores how important you feel school is. Enjoy this time… it progresses much too fast!

Welcome to the 2015/2016 School Year!We begin this new school year with the arrival of our new classroom furniture resulting from the hard work of our dedicated PTL! The new desks and chairs are sleeker and will give us more room in each of the classrooms as we make way for our largest enrollment to date. We donated all of the old furniture to the Sandals Corporation, who shipped it to Negril, Jamaica. Our students left letters in each desk, and we cannot wait to hear from our new pen pals!We have gained full re-accreditation from AISF as well as NCPSA with a glowing report from our accreditation team. We are so proud of our faculty and staff for the work they do every day to make LCS a shining jewel in the First Presbyterian crown. We have been blessed to have initiated our Clippers Program which enhances learning for our academically talented students. Students are referred to this program based on test scores, classroom performance and emotional maturity. The classes work on advanced reading skills as well as project based learning. We continue our travels down the information superhighway with the purchase of twenty new laptops and two new smartboards. The middle school will be part of the BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) initiative as they continue to find the tool that best suits their individual needs for learning and research. Our athletic department looks forward to continued winning seasons as they prepare for Soccer, Tennis, and Track and Field seasons. And our Drama Department will awe us once again as they prepare for a new full-scale musical production in the spring. Last year’s ‘Bye Bye Birdie’ proved once again that we have a talented group of thespians! Our alumni continue to impress us by their acceptances into the area’s top high schools. Their drive and determination have also earned some of them scholarships for academics and fine arts. We wish them God speed as they begin this new chapter in their educational journey.

With pride and love,Rita A. O’Leary, Principal

Our number one wish is for volunteers! If Sundays are difficult for you to volunteer, how about during the week? We’d love to have a children’s Bible study to coincide with Rev. Wayne’s upcoming Convenant Bible Study. We’ll assist you every step of the way! How rewarding to teach the Bible to preschool through Elementary school age children – for them to learn the Bible through love, not fear, and to bring these children at such a young age to truly know our God is its own reward!

JOIN THE CHOIR! WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? It’s time to sign up for the choir! Our Music Department is in need of ‘singers & ringers’ and currently recruiting new members for the Chancel Choir and the Handbell Choir. While the ability to read music is helpful, it is not required. Please call Mark Jones at extension 112 for more information. The Chancel Choir rehearsals resume on Thursday, September 17 in the Choir Room at 7:00 PM. Come and give us a try! This is the best “small group” you’ll ever encounter!

Our Chancel Handbell Choir will resume regular rehearsals on Wednesday evening, October 7 at 7:00 in the rehearsal room.

Kiev Symphony Orchestra and ChorusOn Wednesday, October 14, we will host a performance of the Kiev Symphony Orchestra and Chorus in co-operation with the New Presbyterian Church at 7:00 PM in our Sanctuary. Founded just after the fall of the former Communist Soviet Union, this ensemble comprises 40 Ukraine-based professional musicians. The admission is free, and a free-will offering will be received to help off-set their travel expenses. If you are interested in hosting Russian musicians overnight, please contact Mark Jones in the Music Office at ext. 112.

Monster Concert Sunday, October 30, at 7:30For a ‘goulishly’ good time, enjoy the “Monster Concert” a wackidly wicked Pink Church tradition! Our own Mark Jones is the “Coolest Count” who, along with his “horribly” talented friends, makes the evening “frightfully fun!”See Organist MARK JONES as Dracula. Fun and Fright for all ages featuring terrifying toccatas and haunting harmonies performed on one of the area’s largest pipe organs! Audience costumes encouraged! $10 suggested donation at the door / kids free. Don’t miss it!
