Remember: Safe ice is found at your local ice rinks. Safe outdoor skatingmust have adult supervision.

• Sledding, snowboarding and skiing can cause severe injuries. • Steel-runner sleds or inner tubes are strictly prohibited in parks.• Sled, snowboard and ski in designated areas only.• Pets and alcoholic beverages are strictly prohibited on sledding hills.• All sledders, snowboarders and skiers are recommended to wear protective clothing, equipment and helmets.• Sled, snowboard and ski at your own risk.

Do………………….• Choose a hill that has a gentle slope and that is free of obstacles such as trees, signs, fences, rocks, creeks, parked or moving vehicles, railway track, holes or jumps. • Sled during the daylight or on a well lit hill.• Dress properly, protecting hands, feet, and your face from the cold.• Tuck in any scarves, strings, or long hats that could potentially catch on a rock or tree and cause strangulation or other serious injuries.• Sled by sitting or kneeling down. Never go down head fi rst or standing up.• Check your sled for cracks or damage before use. Choose sleds that you can steer or stop.• Have only the recommended number of passengers on a sled at one time.• Wear a properly fi tted ski or hockey helmet to protect against brain injuries.• Wait until the path is clear before starting down the hill. This could help prevent you from running into another person on your way down.• Move out of the way quickly if you fall or stop suddenly.• Walk back up the side of the hill, away from other sledders.• Parents should go on sleds with children under the age of 5.• Have an adult supervise children while they are sledding.

Avoid………………• Hills that are too icy – you want to be able to stop if you need to;• Inner tubes, crazy carpets, fl ying saucers, garbage bags and cardboard boxes- they are diffi cult to control.• Overcrowding a sled or toboggan with too many riders

Winter Trail Etiquette

1. All trails as designated as multi-use April-October. Alloweduse on trails, trail etiquette and rules change when adequate snowfall allows for track setting and grooming of the trails. Please contribute to positive trail experiences by observing winter trail use designations and trail etiquette.

2. Do not take dogs, horses or mt. bikes on designated ski trails. These activities destroy tracks and may create hazards. On multi-use or skijoring trails please remember to scoop after your dogs and avoid walking on diagonal ski tracks.

3. Watch for grooming equipment any time of the day or night. Please move well off the trail to allow equipment to pass.

4. Avoid skiing directly behind grooming equipment. It takes 2-4 hours for freshly groomed snow to “set up” and harden. Fresh tracks are irresistible, but resisting can make the trails last longer.

5. Travel in the indicated direction of traffi c. Practicing this rule will prevent accidents and damage to the tracks.

6. Do not skate across diagonal tracks. Respect the DIAGONAL/CLASSICAL SKIING ONLY trails.

7. You were a beginner too. Be respectful and considerate of other’s skiing abilities. If you fall, fi ll in the hole.

8. Closed trails are for your safety. During competitions, portions of the trail system may be closed. Please respect all closures.

9. Don’t become a trail obstacle. If you fall, get clear of the trail quickly and repair the damage. Do not stop where you obstruct the trail or are not visible.

10. A pulled sled is allowed on multi-use trails. If you tow a pulk (sled), please use skate lanes.

11. Passing is a two-way affair. When passing, pleasantly let those ahead know your intentions well in advance so they have time to move aside.

12. Horses know the human voice. Use spoken words when pass-ing Equestrians on multi-use trails. Ample warning will help them control their animals.

13. Dog mushing trails are for the dogs. Dog teams travel up to 40 mph and can not stop quickly. If you fi nd yourself on their trail, with a team coming, get off into the snow then retrace your route.

15. Trails are for non-motorized activities. Please report any motor-ized activities on trails to APD at 786-8500.
