Message from our Executive Director
Greetings from GEARS! I hope this message finds you well and safe. My name is David Wendel, I was recently hired as the Executive Director of GEARS. When I accepted the position in March, I was often told, “Great time to start a new job.” I knew these comments were often said with sarcasm considering we were in the early phase of a pandemic that caused GEARS, schools and most businesses in our community to close, but I also sensed from these comments that there was a feeling of hope and promise that things would eventually improve.
When I started in May, GEARS had already sought and received a waiver to provide care for children of essential employees. Additionally, we sought assistance through the Paycheck Protection Program. After receiving the loan, gradually, staff were brought back to start planning for a summer of programs that would look a little different but still provide fun and exciting opportunities for children and adults who had been homebound for several months. Our local business community also stepped up to provide support for our summer playground program and Camp Ladybug. During this critical time, I realized that GEARS possesses some of the most passionate and dedicated staff and board members I have ever had the privilege to work with. They are determined to not allow the pandemic to curtail our operations even in the face of uncertain times. Each day, GEARS staff seek innovative and creative ways to serve you – our customers – with the highest quality programs and customer service. We appreciate your support and look forward to providing you with the programs and services you have come to expect.
Although the pandemic has presented challenges, GEARS has an eye on the future through the implementation of our Feasibility Study that includes improvements to our community center which will enable GEARS to expand its operations and improve services. More information will follow in the coming months. With that said, I am proud and excited to lead and represent GEARS. Everyone I meet seems to have a “GEARS Story” to tell. I look forward to hearing more of them. For me, this really has been a great time to start a new job.
Sincerely, David Wendel
