DOCA kicks off the 100th anniversary of the Women’s Suffrage Movement with yearlong programming celebrating the fierce females of New Jersey. Programs are in partnership with Jersey City Public Schools and Jersey City Office of Cultural Affairs, among other local organizations. Our season opens with an artist reception on August 1 for Pow(h)er, an all-women contemporary exhibition. Pow(h)er illuminates the creativity of female artists focusing on a variety of issues including immigration, fertility, and the body. Jersey City resident and curator Kristin DeAngelis co-curated the exhibit, which features the work of Caroline Burton and Jan Huling, both of whom recently exhibited at the Montclair Art Museum; Trix Rosen, whose photography was featured at MOMA in 2018; Jodie Fink, and Zoë Sua Kay, among other extraordinary women artists. The fall season continues with Relatable, an exhibit curated with the assistance of the new HCCC Gallery Management Class. Relatable highlights the importance of art in everyday life and features emerging and established artists who live or work throughout the state of New Jersey. HCCC alumnus Freddy Samboy and HCCC Professors Michael Lee and Jon Rappleye are joined by artists Beth Achenbach, Pat Lay, Ibou Ndoye, Jim Watt, and others. The exhibit also includes the global skateboard collective, Wenning Boards, Boards for Bros, and the Oaxaca Foundation. Our Teacher as Artist exhibit features the work of HCCC Professor Katie Niewodowski whose art explores the interconnectedness of all living beings. In celebration of Jersey City LGBT Pride Week, join us for a meet and greet on August 20 with mocktails on the Dineen Hull Gallery roof terrace. A touring musician for most of his career, his recordings range from jazz to contemporary classical music, blending ethnic influences, seamlessly integrating genres in a signature style. His collaborations include prominent names such as Freddie Hubbard, Ernie Watts, Taj Mahal, Poncho Sanchez, Tamir Hendelman, and Cybill Shepherd. Tarmu holds a master’s degree in Afro-Latin Music and Music Composition, as well as a doctoral degree in Jazz Performance. He currently teaches music courses at Hudson County Community College and Raritan Valley Community College. HCCC SPOTLIGHTEldad Tarmu is a vibraphonist, composer, and music educator hailing from Los Angeles. DOCA presents SOLO, a new exhibition series celebrating projects by mid-career artists on display in the atrium of Dineen Hull Gallery. We are excited to feature Roberta Melzl as our first artist. Melzl is an artist living in Maplewood, NJ. She earned her MFA at Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University, and her BS in Anthropology and Studio Art at New York University. Melzl’s work is created from an accumulation of sources. It is characterized by the incorporation of various systems of visual representa-tion—embracing elements of technology, architecture, nature, design, and media. www.robertamelzl.com

Katie Niewodowski grew up on the west coast of Florida and has lived in Jersey City since 2006 where she makes her art and owns a person-alized portrait company, Petitraits. She is a professor of Visual Arts at Hudson County Community College, Montclair State University, and Stevens Institute of Technology. Niewodowski received her BFA from Ringling College of Art and Design and her MFA from Montclair State University.

Her work is a meditation on the phenomenon of life and the creative structures that perpetuate it. She explores repeating patterns in nature, the interconnectedness of all living beings, and the portal into these networks that the process of art-making provides. A special HCCC Foundation Artist Talk with artist Karen Finley will be held on Thursday, October 3 which is also the opening day of the Relatable exhibition at the gallery. Karen Finley earned an MFA from San Francisco Art Institute, she is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, NYSCA, and NEA fellowships, and she teaches at New York University. Finley’s art addresses issues that include the treatment of women, AIDS, and the Holocaust. Working in mediums such as installation, video, performance, public art, visual art, entertainment, television and film, memorials, music, and literature.
